His discovery and capture of a band of counterfeiters led to his appointment (1846) as county sheriff and, in 1850, to an appointment as the first city detective on the Chicago police force. He established in the same year a private detective agency, which had considerable success in solving train- and express-company robberies. In 1861 he foiled a plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln, and in the Civil War Pinkerton organized and directed an espionage system behind the Confederate lines. ...Assignment #1 Mohammad Dean 2/13/2015 Criminal Justice 1140 Principals of Security Administration The thought of security is a broad topic which comes off as physical, but is more than tangible. Whether it is securing one self, family or assets it is securing what is most valuable to an individual, a group or enterprise. From the humble beginnings of a small tribe in the Mesopotamia to the great lands of Rome, the development of security and the idea of securing valuable assets was always evident, whether through bloody wars or building of structures such as the temples and pyramids. The behavior can be seen from early development in childhood such that as a toddler. When the toddler is exclaiming “mine” it is an act of protecting what is his or hers. The idea of security has been engraved in our human DNA, so it seems. The history of security advanced from mediocre beginnings to a more superior technology from early history into the twenty first century. What was once a disunified nation of scattered settlements was able to unify with establishing precise security measures from its earliest beginnings of becoming a nation. The chapter in the book describes security as “achieving safety, protection, and freedom from threats and danger.” In the earlier part of history people built fortresses, watch towers and even great walls like that of China. Ancient times relied on castles built with stone walls high from the ground with moats, relied on scouts on horseback or vulnerable...

Then, he closed the mills. It was an open declaration of war. The steel-workers declared that they were ready to take up the challenge of Frick: they would insist on their right to organize and to deal collectively with their employers. Their tone was manly, ringing with the spirit of their rebellious forebears of the Revolutionary War. Then the news flashed across the country of the slaughter of steelworkers by Pinkertons. In the dead of night, Frick sent a boat packed with strike-breakers and heavily armed Pinkerton thugs to the mill. The workers stationed themselves along the shore, determined to drive back Frick’s hirelings. When the boat got within range, the Pinkertons had opened fire, without warning, killing a number of Homestead men on the shore, among them a little boy, and wounding scores of others. The Homestead Strike was one of the most famous strikes that happen in the late 1800s. This is an example of the struggle between labor union and business owners. In some cases, as at the Homestead, the struggle turned violent. The Homestead Strike was at the Carnegie Steel Mill and owned by Andrew Carnegie.
