...Literature Creation Methods of Poe’s Gothic Tales ——Review of The Fall of the House of Usher 英81 高云君 2008012742 As one of the most famous works by Edgar Allan Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher is the a masterpiece in American gothic literature. The prose is full with of elements and details which are unsettling and macabre. It was slightly revised in 1840 for the collection Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. Poe’s gothic novels have always been my readings before bed since I was younga child. In my childhood, following the unnamed narrator and walking towards that old and creepy house, I was immersed in the horrible storyline and experience the fantastic feeling of nightmare. Today when I look back on this literature work, I get some deeper understanding and . Ⅰ. Hellish environment setting :Use of double space The whole environment and different scenes in the story are so hellish that the reader feels a kind of inexplicable asphyxia. I summarize some typical elements Poe uses to build a gothic atmosphere. Day: a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn. Location: a singularly dreary tract of country. House and surrounding: upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain - upon the bleak walls - upon the vacant eye-like windows - upon a few rank sedges - and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees. The precipitous brink of a black and lurid tarn. If that can be called the exterior space, then the internal...

Poe created an “aesthetic theory, setting the basis to American scepticism through the first person narrative, “ (shaping many into one). Poes’ had a connection to the American culture and improved upon American literature through his philosophy of composition, celebrating a liaison between artistic autonomy and productivity, mainly prose fiction. he also believes that “the power of words expresses the concept of endless productivity,” (poe...

...One assignment presented to us was “The Raven”- Parody, which was a little assignment meant to increase our understanding and organization of internal rhyme and end rhymes within our own poems, having been structured by Edgar Allan Poes “The Raven”. Using the original poem, we were to create a parody or poem with the same type of stanzas and ryhme to match that of the worlds renound “The Raven” to better increase our overall chomprehension over poetry and ryhme. I have decided to use this piece as it presented a clever understanding of how to focus on poetic devices, as well as how to master them in a certian sense as Edger Allan Poe had many decades ago. What I had initially found interesting about this piece is the use of grim symbolism...

...2012 Liang, Marier, and Cui 55 S Y East Meets West P O S I U Strategic Human Resource Management in China: by Xiaoya Liang, Janet H. Marier, and Zhiyu Cui Executive Overview This paper outlines important ideological, institutional, and cultural contexts that shape what strategic human resource management practices are possible in Ghina. A detailed review of the main components of the high-performance work systems model suggests that when they are introduced into the Ghinese socioeconomic and political context, the cost-benefit calculus for high-performance work system human resource management practices is different from that in the U.S. context. Yet, in our review of Ghina-based strategic human resource management research we find the expected positive relationship between high-performance work systems and organizational performance in companies operating in Ghina. We conclude with a case example to illustrate how Ghinese firms might be both adopting and adapting the high-performance work system model to better fit their current cultural and economic context. T he Study of strategic human resource management (SHRM) emerged out of researchers' interests in understanding the relationship between human resource management and organizational performance (Delery & Doty, 1996; Kaufman, 2007). Since the late 1980s, most research evidence in this vein has been collected from firms located in the United States (see Combs, Liu, Hall, &. Ketchen, 2006; Huselid...

...order to understand the answers behind Poe’s death. The “enemy of Poe, Rufus Wilmot Griswold is a man that Poe did not like.” In one of Poe’s last letters to Rufus he writes that he is not happy with how Rufus critiqued one of Poe’s friends rudely. This promoted a rivalry between the two men (I). Assuming Poe was killed through mercury chloride more research should be done on the doctor who prescribed this unruly medication. If the doctor had given him to high a dose “this could cause hallucinations and in some cases death” (J). Lastly, Sarah Whiteman and Frances Sargent Osgood were known for exchanging romantic poems with Poe. This could explain why he died just ten days before Sarah Elmira's and Poes wedding (K). Further investigation must be done on Poe’s life and friends to learn Poes true cause of death. Since E.A.Poe official hospital death records have not been found we must do more research on Poe. With the new technology and advancements in the modern scientific field the cause of death will be found. We must learn Poe’s cause of death to learn what life was like in the mind and body of one of the greatest American poets in history. ...

Edgar Allan Poe was given the nickname “Father of the Detective Story” due to his distinctive writing form. The tone, imagery and language in “Alone” and “A Dream within a Dream” allows Edgar Allan Poe to create poems based on his dark, disturbing and dysfunctional upbringing. Edgar was born January 19, 1809, he was the middle child. Edgar parents died when he was three, and he moved in with a successful business man, John. John wanted Edgar to follow in his footsteps, but Edgar mind was set on becoming a writer. Edgar attended University of Virginia at 17 where he made good grades. ...07/08/15 Poetry essay ENG4U-42 A Dream within a Dream By Edgar Allen Poe Take this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now, Thus much let me avow-- You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream; Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand-- How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep--while I weep! O God! can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream? Analysis My initial glance through this poem I realise that the poet is not really talking about a dream. He compares life metaphorically to a dream within a dream. The structure of this poem is not a standard rhyming pattern which halts the reader in order to absorb what is being said. The poem consists of nine couplets and two triplets. The opening stanza, for example, begins with a triplet, then shifts to couplets and the second stanza shifts from couplets to triplet in the middle then shifts back to the original pattern. The poem expresses the poet’s frustration of the uncertainty and temporariness of life and people. He compares life and dreams because when we dream, it seems so real but when we are awakened by the roar of life...

...shroud it in the theme of fear, torture, and madness. The pit, i believe symbolizes humanity's fear of the unknown, it can also represent the gate to hell, seeing how this story is set during the Spanish Inquisition this theory is highly plausible. Also the psych of Poe himself can be used as an example of an effective horror tone and atmosphere. But this story isnt just horror is it? No this goes much deeper than that by addressing the malleability of the human mind. In the text it states that the narrator witnesses a trio of white candles turn into angels and then shift to his tormentors. What sets this story apart is that it instills a feeling of terror into the reader with its heavy emphasis on the senses of the narrator, unlike poes other works such as the Tell-Tale Heart and The Raven which rely on the supernatural element typical of horror stories. The pendulum which filleted anyone unlucky enough to be caught in it’s wake, symbolizes the fallibility of humans as a whole and the march of time till death. As the narrator describes it as swinging by every one second. This helps create an extremely tense atmosphere during the scene in which the narrator is tied down with the pendulum swinging by every one second, Poe masterfully executed this in a way that you can almost hear the pendulum cutting through the air as it whistles by at the speed of time itself. The true beauty and artistry of this story is that the theme and mood can be interpreted in many different...

...Name: Course: Tutor: Date Introduction Various authors write various books to convince their readers of the goodness or badness of the various situations on the lives of these authors. Thus, the literal styles used in the books tend to draw the attention of readers while at the same time playing with their emotions. As if for instance, Edgar Allan Poe wrote a story entitled ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ to convince the readers of the book on his sanity based on the murder activity in his life. Based on Edgar’s book, this paper analyses the story in trying to establish the psychological problem of the narrator. Analysis of various incidences in the story The narrator speaks of murdering an old man and he uses this as an evidence of sanity. This is thus a crime and it reveals that he has monomania. From the story, it is clear that the murdered old man did not have any quarrels or any form of clashes with the author but still the author just chose to murder him. From the analysis of the story, there is nowhere in the book that the author talks ill of the old man. Instead, he praises him stating that he does not know what made him kill the man (Harper, 2013). From the story, the author loved the old man and he never wronged anyone, not even the person who killed him. Despite the old man having various treasures such as gold and other objects, the killer, that is, the author, never had an ill will against his possessions that could have made him kill the man to inherit...
