...Describe the powers the police have to stop and search an individual on the street [18 marks] The main powers to stop and search are set out in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. They are also set out in the Police Codes of Practice, which are supplemental to the legislation. Section 1 of PACE gives the police power to stop and search a person in a public place if they have reasonable suspicion that prohibited articles, stolen goods or articles made, adapted or intended for use are in their possession. Prohibited articles can include weapons and drugs. Prohibited articles are added to the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 (SOCPA). The police officer must give his/her name, station and reason for the search and provide the suspect with a written report for the search. A failure to meet these requirements will render the search unlawful Osman v DPP (1999). When searching a suspect, the officer can only request them to remove outer clothing. This is limited to coat, jacket and gloves. If a search is performed under the Terrorism Act 2000, then the suspect can be asked to remove their shoes and headgear. Code of Practice A sets out the guidance for stop and search. Paragraph 2.2 states that the powers to stop and search must not be based on personal factors alone, such as age, race, clothing or previous conviction. They must be used fairly, with respect and without discrimination. The case of Castorina gives the meaning of reasonable suspicion; the question...

The Uniform Crime Reports UCR Program from the FBI collects information on crimes reported to law enforcement authorities such as murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The this data is compiled from monthly law enforcement reports made directly to the FBI or to centralized state agencies that then report to the FBI. Each report submitted to the UCR Program is examined for reasonableness, accuracy, and deviations that may indicate errors. Any variations in crime levels may indicate modified records procedures, incomplete reporting, or changes in a jurisdiction's boundaries. To identify any unusual anomalies in an agency's crime counts, monthly reports are compared with previous submissions of the agency and with those for similar agencies. This report also includes detailed data on crimes cleared, persons arrested for a wide range of crimes, law enforcement personnel, and the characteristics of homicides such as age, sex, race of victims, and circumstances surrounding the homicides. The UCR presents crime counts for the Nation as a whole, as well as for regions, states, counties, cities, towns, tribal law enforcement, and colleges and universities. Research done by Gamble and Hess (2012) stated that in 2009, aggravated assaults made up around 61% of violent crime; robbery made up 31%; rape made up 6.7%, and murder made up 1.2%. But what causes this violence? According to Gamble and Hess (2012), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) created a list of factors that influence violent crime, and weather is one of them. This is quite interesting to look at to see if there is a relationship between average temperature and violent crime rate. Estimates of the extent of the problem Violent crime is sweeping the nation and is still causing problems for federal, state, city, and local police agencies. In 2013, an estimated 1,163,146 violent crimes took place across the nation (Federal Bureau of Investigation [FBI], 2014). The FBI’s Uniform Crime Report (UCR) compromises four offenses as violent crime; these include murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault (FBI, 2014). Per 100,000 people, there was an estimate of 367.9 violent crimes committed in 2013 (FBI, 2014). The FBI (2014) disclosed that aggravated assaults made up approximately 62.3% of violent crimes that were actually reported to law enforcement in 2013; robbery made up approximately 29.7% of violent crimes; rape made up approximately 6.9%; and murder made up approximately 1.2%. In order to better assess violent crimes committed across the country, I chose twenty-five cities that are...

...Later Adulthood Report Later adulthood is the onset of many who become 50, and older who experience life changes when it comes to social, financial, and mental health. In today’s society people who are 65 and older make up more than 15 percent of the population in America today(Himes, 2001). Their place in society also faces a change, and is considered a fast growing group in today’s society. Among the changes comes their incapability to care for themselves, finance, housing, and retirement. Social change happens when people in this age group are faced difficulties to the lifestyle changes that take place. There are some who lose their partners, and become despondent, the loss of friends, and becoming isolated from others. Most times that older adults become less independent they have to live with other family members, and this can cause them to be less likely to interact with others. This causes change in daily routines, and also causes them to feel a burden on family members. These changes can also make for a transition into other types of living conditions. Most people in this stage of their lives elect to live in places where their independence is intact. They choose to live in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, or retirement homes so that they can maintain some sort of independence. Health care is also an issue, because some are in need of care that requires them to have home nursing services. These can be achieved by living in a place where health care can...
