Joe: A Filipino Rockssical is a unique play performed by the Philippine Stagers Foundation because it written as a play within a play. The presentation was properly executed. It stated information foreign to some viewers. The title of the play implies that it uses both modern rock and traditional Filipino styles of acting and music to bring about a different story of Dr. Jose Rizal. The author, director, writer, and lead actor of the play is the talented Atty. Vince Tañada who has already earned numerous awards for his excellence in directing and performing stage plays. The theme was a modern take on the story of Dr. Jose Rizal’s love life with Josephine Bracken. The cast are all members of the Philippine Stagers Foundation who gave good performances playing their respective roles. Atty. Tañada plays JoeCas, the lead character who is a rocker-playwright. Cindy Maree Liper plays Joanne Silvestre, the love interest of JoeCas that eventually falls out of love with him. Jordan Ladra and Kierwin Larena play Hunter Quizon and Bimbo Alcarraz. Other leads are portrayed by by Adelle Ibarrientos, Cherry Bagtas, Chris Lim, Chin Ortega, JM Encinas, and Gabby Bautista. Joe or Jose Rizal is portrayed by Patrick Adrian Libao and Monique Azerreda portrays Josephine Bracken. Atty. Tañada’s direction was superb considering that he wrote the dialogue and the lyrics of the songs used on the play. The dialogue stated facts and also had a unique brand of comedy added to it to make the play more enjoyable to watch. The props and costumes used also made the play more attractive. But the area that I was impressed most is the music they used. The songs were composed by Vince himself. Even the handling of the plot was good.
