The Vice President is the first person in the presidential line of succession, and the primary responsibility is to be ready to take over the Presidency when the President is unable to perform his duties. It could happen when death, resignation or removal of President. Nowadays, the Vice President is elected together with President by the Electoral College which each elector casts one vote for President and another for Vice President. However, before the ratification of the 12th Amendment, electors only voted for President, and the person who received the second greatest number of votes became Vice President. In addition, the Vice President also serves as the President of the Senate. He is only allowed to vote in the Senate when it is necessary
