Product Development

Today social media is one of the most talked about and the most used form of communication among many generations we see today. They vary from parents, students, athletes, companies, business, consumers, organizations and other various forms of social networking. Social media allows users to share, exchange, collect; information, ideas and pictures/videos in networks via laptops, cell phones, IPADS, or any other mobile device that may have access to virtual communities or networks. As social media replaces old fashion ways, many healthcare providers such as hospitals are jumping on the social media wave to enhance its market potential against their competitors to have an advantage. New technological advancements have made their way to healthcare providers which are going unseen by patients and consumers. Qualified staff members and doctors are being employed; new improvements to the internal and external within hospitals are being made. Without the use of social media these aspects can be overlooked by just walking into any healthcare facility. One way of presenting these new ideas, advancements and changes is by the use of social media, to reach a wide variety of people. The way I would build my hospitals brand is simply by creating a social media app specifically for our healthcare facility. By creating this app for cell phones, IPADs, tablets and any other smart devices that may connect to a network. It would cater to patients, future patients, staff members and doctors, who they can use in the comfort of the comfort of their homes, on the go and anywhere they may need quick access or reference. According to Kemp (2015), “Unique mobile users exceeded 50% of the world’s population in September 2014, and the current year-on-year growth rate of more than 5% suggest we’ll see roughly 200 million new mobile users over the next 12 months”. By creating a mobile app it allows all generations to connect on a personal level without feeling the pressure of asking, embarrassment of confidential information, or just by being convenient for users who may not be able to make scheduled appointments or follow ups. I believe the life cycle of the hospital mobile app would continue to grow over the years. The way social media is growing everyday by the minute, I see making the hospital app a longevity product within the healthcare community. Most phone companies these days are making mobile use and downloading apps easy enough to allow “one touch” of anything you may want to access. As social apps continue to grow, so are the consumers who connect everyday by using them. This strategy will help the hospital to connect to patients, staff members, doctors or even other hospitals within the network. Their strategy would target all generations from young to old, college students, business men and women on the go and anyone looking for a local hospital that offers safe, clean and the convenience. To analyze this hospital app, I relied on The Boston Consulting Group’s Growth/Share Matrix and found that this product would fall into the upper right vertical quadrant known as a question mark. The reason why I feel that it would be considered a question mark is because the product has a high growth potential, but has a low market share for the market it is in. The hospital app would be downloaded and consumed by many patients looking for convenience, but would bring little back in return. Like any other question mark product, this smart device app is growing as social media expands and more patients are informed on a daily basis, which can later turn it into a star product. Two examples of differential advantages this hospital app has, it allows patients to schedule appointments with specific doctors or surgeons by creating, canceling or seeing future available dates. The second advantage it would have against its competitors is it would send alert reminders of upcoming appointments, follow ups and payment arrangements. By creating this hospital app I would stress to hospital and or healthcare administration, that they must keep patients both young and old the importance technology and social media plays in healthcare today. The internet has become the main source for medical information today, which goes without saying that more and more people are using the internet and social media to research their medical issues (Krueger, 2010). Healthcare providers are connecting more to patients by using social media than ever before. Providers are you using social media to connect with patients provide public awareness and allow them to answer any questions a patient may have. Technology has also changed healthcare by providing healthcare facilities with new advanced machines, medicines, and technological treatments. Advancement in technology has also improved research so medical staff member can make healthcare more effective. Since information technology has made its way within the healthcare community it has allowed patient safety to become more reliable and efficient. Nurses and doctors are using IPADs and other portable devices to record patients medical history, store results of lab test, records of vital signs, which can be referred to later. With these advancements, patients have access to their own personal information so they can understand what their medical history is (Krueger, 2010). Technology has let doctors connect to patients and staff members by using email, text, conference calls and other various forms of technology to make it easier for them to be reached. By using these technological advancements it allows doctors to practice telemedicine, where they don’t have to move patients around to consult with experts from all over the world to diagnose and treat conditions without needing a specific hospital (Cite business). Online databases such as Google have made it possible for healthcare providers to foresee medical trends and outbreaks that may have occurred before they may happen. By relying on a future forecast, medical staff and doctors are able to react quickly to take preventative measures. So as social media grows towards the near future, I believe my product the hospital app would continue to grow as more patients are being well informed during visits. During the first few months this app would be a test run with basic information such as pictures of various departments so patients can get to know staff members, frequently asked questions (FAQs) one touch payments and a few other basic functions. Towards the future I would love to see it grow into a larger social app where it would contain healthcare/hospital games, quizzes about health, confidential health information, doctor reports, information on technology advancements the hospital has received, fun facts about health, upcoming events and wait times.
