Introduction

In this project we gone a be actively involved in internationalization in an early stage of our studies by talking to people abroad . Of course to find out more information about educational systems. We think it is very important to have a clear goal and what marketing related. An important goal is: by (marketing) researching find out more information what possible fellow students abroad think it is very important in education. Information that is Useful for the international marketing department so that they can see if they can welcome even more international students.

We hope after this project to have enough information to respond to these following questions:

. What is the image of the FEM, when seen internationally?

. What are the expectations the students willing to go abroad?

. How does our university partners base his recruitment strategy?

. What other stuff attract students there?

. What’s the school culture of that university?

During the project we will conduct some interviews with some students that went abroad or are still studying abroad, analyse websites, the surrounding of the university partner, the city, the country culture, etc...
After all that, we will then come our personal statement based on this project.

The Educational Culture

The school culture of the INSEEC is a mix of bureaucratic school culture and collegial school culture. We based ourselves from it to bring out the educational culture of the INSEEC.

1. Bureaucratic school culture because of the facts that:

• Administrator at the helm; teachers are followers of the dictated regimen.

• Policies are mandated from above, with little or no input from teachers.

2. Collegial school culture because of the facts that:

• Trust and confidence between teachers and students

• Appreciation and recognition of the students with their work.

• Caring, celebration, and humor between teachers and students. When it comes to International students, they are really organized.

• Traditions (ie. the rituals, ceremonies and symbols that strengthen the school culture) are celebrated.

But sometimes it happens, teachers are expected to solve discipline problems on their own and although they can see how the school could improve, they tend to focus on their own classroom.

The facilities of the INSEEC (Paris)

Close to the Place de la Republique and the Canal Saint-Martin in paris, the new building of the INSEEC unfolds on 4 levels. The architectural style is Boucicaut - the great merchant who founded the first department store in Paris, Bon Marché, where daylight entered for the first time in the building because it had asked its architects (including Tower) large openings and windows.
INSEEC The building, entirely renewed, offers 3 lecture halls, 30 classrooms, a large number of workspaces for group activities, a large office space to host associative student projects, a research laboratory, and 20 offices for all support services (educational and administrative) .

The campus has a glass-roofed cafeteria and a library where you can find all the press. This will be your "home" Paris for 3 years. A Wi-Fi installation, you can be online anywhere in the building. 5000 m2 in town, here's something worthy to receive all work in teams, conferences and initiatives proposed by the INSEEC and courses taught by faculty and visiting.

City and surroundings

The attraction of Paris for a student, whether French or foreign, is quite extraordinary: first, because it is a city that we want to explore and discover.
Who has not felt any emotion on the Place de la Concorde in the early morning or face the Pont Alexandre III? Unless they prefer the historic ambience of the Marais where galleries, shops "trendy" and small museums rub. Or the countless exhibitions organized by the Cité des Sciences really close to Paris INSEEC?
Is probably as a student that you appreciates the city the most, because the flexibility of schedule and Preferential rates can enjoy the rich cultural and festive ...

How could you ever be bored when more than one hundred exhibitions, concerts and original activities are offered at the same time?

More about Paris

International economic capital, second European financial market after London, Paris is easily accessible and located in the heart of Europe. Paris is the 4th greenest city in the world and in 3rd place for air quality.

Place des Vosges, a place really close to the INSEEC, is one of the most interesting locations in the Marais, is a delightful residential square created in the 17th century. The houses surrounding the square have kept their original period look, one that appears unique to this section of Paris.

The compact square and the houses surrounding it are well preserved. The Place des Vosges retains the appearance of the past and implies to the observer the nuances of upper class life in historic Paris. Among other notables, Cardinal Richelieu and Victor Hugo once lived in the Place Des Vosges. The House of Victor Hugo, author of Les Miserables and the Hunchback of Notre-Dame, is now a modest museum (6 Place des Vosges). A covered arcade runs along the first floor of the buildings and contains several excellent restaurants and a few upscale shops. That place is also really know for his night-life, there is le Marais, a night club in the direction of the Louvre, which is probably last year's chicest club and many others places to make your stay really full of joy.

French culture, customs and etiquette

. French cooking is highly refined and involves careful preparation, attention to detail, and the use of fresh ingredients.
. It varies by region and is heavily influenced by what is grown locally.
French Family Values
. The family is the social adhesive of the country and each member has certain duties and responsibilities.
. The extended family provides both emotional and financial support.
. Despite their reputation as romantics, the French have a practical approach towards marriage.
. Families have few children, but parents take their role as guardians and providers very seriously.
Relationships - Public vs. Private
. The French are private people and have different rules of behavior for people within their social circle and those who are not.
. Although the French are generally polite in all dealings, it is only with their close friends and family that they are free to be themselves.
. Friendship brings with it a set of roles and responsibilities, including being available should you be needed. Friendship involves frequent, if not daily, contact.

Etiquette & Customs in France

[pic]
Meeting Etiquette
. The handshake is a common form of greeting.
. Friends may greet each other by lightly kissing on the cheeks, once on the left cheek and once on the right cheek.
. First names are reserved for family and close friends. Wait until invited before using someone's first name.
. You are expected to say 'bonjour' or 'bonsoir' (good morning and good evening) with the honorific title Monsieur or Madame when entering a shop and 'au revoir' (good-bye) when leaving.
. If you live in an apartment building, it is polite to greet your neighbors with the same appellation.

Gift Giving Etiquette Flowers should be given in odd numbers but not 13, which is considered unlucky.
. Some older French retain old-style prohibitions against receiving certain flowers: White lilies or chrysanthemums as they are used at funerals; red carnations as they symbolize bad will; any white flowers as they are used at weddings.
. Prohibitions about flowers are not generally followed by the young. When in doubt, it is always best to err on the side of conservatism.
. If you give wine, make sure it is of the highest quality you can afford. The French appreciate their wines.
. Gifts are usually opened when received.
Dining Etiquette
If you are invited to a French house for dinner:
. Arrive on time. Under no circumstances should you arrive more than 10 minutes later than invited without telephoning to explain you have been detained.
. The further south you go in the country, the more flexible time is.
. If invited to a large dinner party, especially in Paris, send flowers the morning of the occasion so that they may be displayed that evening.
. Dress well. The French are fashion conscious and their version of casual is not as relaxed as in many western countries.
Table maners:
. Table manners are Continental -- the fork is held in the left hand and the knife in the right while eating.
. If there is a seating plan, you may be directed to a particular seat.
. Do not begin eating until the hostess says 'bon appétit'.
. If you have not finished eating, cross your knife and fork on your plate with the fork over the knife.
. Do not rest your elbows on the table, although your hands should be visible and not in your lap.
. Finish everything on your plate.
. Do not cut salad with a knife and fork. Fold the lettuce on to your fork.
. Peel and slice fruit before eating it.
. Leave your wineglass nearly full if you do not want more.

Business Etiquette and Protocol in France

Relationships & Communication French business behavior emphasizes courtesy and a degree of formality.
. Mutual trust and respect is required to get things done.
. Trust is earned through proper behavior.
. Creating a wide network of close personal business alliances is very important.
. If you do not speak French, an apology for not knowing their language may aid in developing a relationship.
. It is always a good idea to learn a few key phrases, since it demonstrates an interest in a long-term relationship.
. The way a French person communicates is often predicated by their social status, education level, and which part of the country they were raised.
. In business, the French often appear extremely direct because they are not afraid of asking probing questions.
. Written communication is formal. Secretaries often schedule meetings and may be used to relay information from your French business colleagues.
Business Meetings Etiquette
. Appointments are necessary and should be made at least 2 weeks in advance.
. Appointments may be made in writing or by telephone and, depending upon the level of the person you are meeting, are often handled by the secretary.
. Do not try to schedule meetings during July or August, as this is a common vacation period.
. If you expect to be delayed, telephone immediately and offer an explanation.
. Meetings are to discuss issues, not to make decisions.
. Avoid exaggerated claims, as the French do not appreciate hyperbole.

Business Negotiation
. French business emphasizes courtesy and a fair degree of formality.
. Wait to be told where to sit.
. Maintain direct eye contact while speaking.
. Business is conducted slowly. You will have to be patient and not appear ruffled by the strict adherence to protocol.
. Avoid confrontational behavior or high-pressure tactics. It can be counterproductive.
. The French will carefully analyze every detail of a proposal, regardless of how minute.
. Business is hierarchical. Decisions are generally made at the top of the company.
. The French are often impressed with good debating skills that demonstrate an intellectual grasp of the situation and all the ramifications.
. Never attempt to be overly friendly. The French generally compartmentalize their business and personal lives.
. Discussions may be heated and intense.
. High-pressure sales tactics should be avoided. The French are more receptive to a low-key, logical presentation that explains the advantages of a proposal in full.
. When an agreement is reached, the French may insist it be formalized in an extremely comprehensive, precisely worded contract.
Dress Etiquette
. Business dress is understated and stylish.
. Men should wear dark-colored, conservative business suits for the initial meeting. How you dress later is largely dependent upon the personality of the company with which you are conducting business.
. Women should wear either business suits or elegant dresses in soft colors.
. The French like the finer things in life, so wear good quality accessories.

Business Cards
. Business cards are exchanged after the initial introductions without formal ritual.
. Have the other side of your business card translated into French. Although not a business necessity, it demonstrates an attention to detail that will be appreciated.
. Include any advanced academic degrees on your business card.
. French business cards are often a bit larger than in many other countries.

We had the chance to sit With Dik Jansen, a Dutch student abroad. He is studying in the university of Nantes. He was pretty enthusiast to help me out .

Summary first interview:

The cultural difference: Dik wasn’t that much affected about the cultural difference, but of course there were some points that he noticed some differences. 1st you got the fact that most of the people around him sleep in the afternoon. Something he doesn’t see that much in Holland. 2nd , they are all living in harmony in his school, there is no such things as discrimination or whatever cause the people of his entourage are really international.

Personal experiences: Dik, is experimenting a lot there in Nantes, but the few he could tell us is that, 1st there are people really down for him. Some people helping him even though he is a foreigner. They are all willing to show him the right away. 2nd he also liked how people from different countries sometimes, have a very different view of looking at a topic in discussion.

Fundraising: Going on exchange was really expensive for him. But he had support from his parents.

Others practical issues: He was really pleased with fact that the school arranged a place for him, even though he is looking for a place on his own. The only problem they found him a place when he was already there. It would have been better if they had done it before he get there. But the school was always there helping him every problems he had , and they are still doing it. He also pointed the fact of having friends helps a lot. It made you get used to things a bit faster.

Second student :

First-Name: Guillaume

Last Name: de la Cour

Education: International Supply Chain Management

University: INSEEC

Country of Origin: Paris ( FRANCE)

Study program: Minor

Email address : sexy-guillaume@hotmail.com

Interview 2

For our second interview, we decided to interview Guillaume de la cour , He studied in the “ INSEEC ” , he was studying International Supply Chain Management 4 years ago. He is 28 years old and is currently working as Head manager of the expedition and relocation of Carrefour ( some famous French supermarkets chain).

Summary second interview:
Paris being a really international city is a really plus for the INSEEC , we can see with this interview of really big the impact of the city have on the school itself. Being a French guy, Guillaume didn’t have to face the kind much problems, the ones he faced were a little bit different than the ones international students are used to face.
Concerning the cultural differences Guillaume didn’t felt it that much, maybe only when it comes to his time in Sweden. We can see that the INSEEC propose many courses for international students then we do, which is a good thing to get more students.

Personal statement about studying abroad in the 3rd year

Jules Roland:
It’s always been my dream to study abroad and I can say, it’s always been part of my life as well. Since I’m actually living abroad and this is the third country I am studying in. But i sure can’t wait to study in Canada. Since it’s one of my favorite country and they are also able to speak French there, which a good thing for me who was born in a French talking country.

Thomas van der leest:

Interesting Partner Universities

1. Vancouver Island University It’s so easy to find information about them. They thought about everything and put it on their site even links to find some forum they create just to give some tips to international students and discuss about studying there. Apparently most of the international students are Americans or French. http://www.mala.ca/international/index.asp

2. Universidad Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid This University stood out to us because it had a lot of good features. We love the fact that about 18 % of the students were from another country. This way you can experience even more new cultures and people. Their site website is so simple made, that it is practically impossible to look for information without finding some. http://www.ufv.es/oformacion.aspx?sec=2014

3. Leeds metropolitan university We went for this university this University a lot because it is one of the few universities that is not located in Europe. The University was in 2007 the best university of the UK and also because their main target of international students is in India. Which interested us cause we were doing some research about it. And also their website is so simple made, you can just blindly find everything you are looking for. http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/world-widehorizons/index.htm

The Project in general

This project was a great assignment.
It made us work really hard and seriously . During the entire project we had to look for information about the will, expectations, preparation and feelings of the Dutch students that study or are studying abroad and to make some research about a partner student of our choice. And all these research were followed by an interview to get more information. The project was really interesting, it gave us the opportunity to get more information about studying abroad and get the feeling for it.
We are really pleased by the fact that we had to do this project mostly cause it’s not only for the sake of studying, or helping the international office to fix their goals and their marketing strategy. But it’s also for our own sake. Cause It prepared us with what we are going to face in the next years, since we are all going to study abroad in this course. And now we know how to deal with them problems.

Evaluate How an Organisation’s Strategic Initiatives Can Be Achieved Through a Project Portfolio

...Evaluate How An Organisation’s Strategic Initiatives Can Be Achieved Through A Project Portfolio Meskendahl (2010) defines business strategies as tactics used by a company to compete in the market compared to its competitors. As organisations strive to beat competition and deliver customer satisfaction effectively and efficiently, the use of projects thus increase. Project portfolio can be used as the bridge between strategy formulation and strategy implementation (Meskendahl 2010; Cleland 1999; Dietrich & Lehtonen 2005; Grundy 2000). Archer & Ghasemzadeh (1999) defines project portfolio as a “set of projects that share and compete for scarce resources and are carried out under the sponsorship and management of a particular organisation”. Thus it is of great importance to structure project portfolio in alignment with the organisation’s strategy so as to archive business objectives. According to Cooper et al. (2002), the following are three main objectives for project portfolio management: • Increasing financial value • Aligning portfolio to strategic goals • Balancing the projects within the firm’s capacities In order to archive this objective there is a need to understand the strategic orientation of the firm or what we call corporate mindset (Meskendahl 2010; Talke 2007). Strategies should consider the position of the business both internally and externally for example, a company’s systematic advantage towards its competitors (Morgan & Strong, 2003)...

Understanding Culture for International Projects

...Introduction With the initiation of global economy comes an increased interaction between people of different countries and an increase in the need to deal with cultural differences. Thus, there must be an understanding of how the international project will affect people and how people will affect the project. This requires an understanding of economic, demographic, educational, ethical, ethnic, religious, and other characteristic of the people for whom the project affects or who have an interest in the project (Egeland, 2011). Today’s projects have dramatically increased in complexity, which requires a culturally and functionally diverse mix of individuals who must be assimilated into an effective unit – a project team. In order for the project to succeed it will be predicated upon the effectiveness of teamwork during all phases of the project life cycle (Knutson, J, 2001). Therefore, it is critical that organizations involved in international projects take into consideration “cultural risk”, which, if not consciously recognized may lead to ineffectiveness and in some cases prove to be very costly (Sennara & Hartman, 2002). Therefore, it must be understood that the most crucial element in international projects is “culture” (PM Hut, 2012). What is Culture? “Culture” refers to a way of life for a group or community that practices and shares values and common experiences that shapes the way in which the group or community understands the world. These values and practices...

Cultural Framework

...------------------------------------------------- International Management EA ------------------------------------------------- Assignment 12407210 - Hang Nguyen Title Compare and contrast cultural frameworks developed by Geert Hofstede and Fons Trompenaars. I - Introduction Different national cultures comprise different cultural value systems. The value systems are generated from a conception, or as noted previous beliefs, of existing means or resources, and necessities. Cultures have various standards and some factors such as behaviors, traditions or communication of one culture can be observed as irrelevant or sometimes even threatening by other cultures. These uncertainties can bring into being cultural gaps between people within a workforce. Not only do the variety of cultural structure interacting together increase the potential for conflict or disagreement, but also methods of control disputation among the cultures. The project manager must be able to handleconfrontation using different styles, depending on the circumstances, in order to effectively manage a diverse team. This paper discusses the most well-known and accepted theories of cultural differences and illustrates them with cases from international project management. This includes describing the links of global business strategy to the performance of HR responsibilities in international business and discussing the outcomes that a strategically managed international business might expect from effectively tying together an international business strategy and SIHRM. The chapter then summarizes the findings of research studies on the nature and role of strategic IHRM. LEARNING OBJECTIVES * Describe the development of SIHRM and the process of international strategic management. * Describe the evolution of the MNE in terms of various stages of internationalization and the methods firms use to enter international markets. * Describe the process for developing MNE strategy and IHRM strategy and the relationship between the two. * The extent and nature of research into...

Wolfgang's Balancing Act

...challenges that Wolfgang is facing are communication to other executives on maintaining management competencies set by headquarters? Is a competency-based pay system more flexible or standardization already established? Healthcare’s goal was to have the same compensation system globally, however compensation is extremely complex. Pay systems must conform to local laws for employee compensation while also fitting into global Healthcare’s policies. Leadership Competence of the Healthcare Group Competency has been defined demonstrable characteristics of the employee including knowledge, skills, and behaviors (Jahja & Kleiner, 1997). Competencies outlined for Healthcare are as follows: • Business related competencies include achievement orientation, innovation, and change, and decision making. • People-related competencies include team leadership, capability development, relationship building, and influence of others. • Personal competencies include business understanding, analytical thinking, and self-development. This paper presents a more benign and theoreticallygrounded view on what goes wrong by comparing the project designs, daily practices, project cultures and management approaches of two recent megaprojects in The Netherlands and Australia, showing how these projects made sense of uncertainty, ambiguity and risk. We conclude that project design and project cultures play a role in determining how managers and partners cooperate to achieve project objectives...

Diversity

...scholarship, I did it under the broader understanding of what diversity means to me.  I believe true diversity includes race, religion, marital status, ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender, sexual orientation and importantly to me… age.  As I later discovered, a broad definition similar to this had already been established by the diversity commission.  It has been an honor and privilege working with the commission and I wish you the best in continuing to meet the ever changing diversity needs of the university and the surrounding community.  Take care and God bless! Sincerely in warm regards, Question: What does the word ‘diversity’ mean to you? Large group session/personal reflection exercise Introduction This report contains the ideas, knowledge and insight that took place over a three and a half day session in Sackville, New Brunswick. The Youth For Diversity Project, aims to bring approximately 25 youth together in one arena to discuss, debate and create ideas and plans around the issue of diversity. Half of the session was spent looking at the individual and group definitions of diversity, with sessions that included both reflective and group exercises. Small groups were formed to further flesh out concepts around diversity—racism, ageism, sexual orientation, access to resources, etc.—to further understand the impact that diversity has had on us and those around us. To add to these sessions, four guest speakers were invited to address the group around particular...
