You have founded your own networking company. You have been asked to submit a proposal for a new network at RobCo Industries. They have asked you to help design, specify and install a network at their facility. Use the knowledge and skills covered in this class to help you with this project. Should you need any information not covered in this document (such as if the offices have baseboards, etc.), please feel free to ask the instructor.

RobCo is located in the Port Huron Industrial Park on 16th Street. They are a small company with about 75 employees. Their main product is the patented "Propeller Beanie". They manufacture this item at the Port Huron facility. Currently they have only a few PC's installed, but their technology plan envisions that most employees will work with PC's in the future and that everyone will communicate via an intranet.
In essence, your group will create a "case study"... Each week, we will be focusing on a different aspect of the project.

The Total budget for this project is $25,000. Week 1 - Physical Plant
The exterior dimensions of the building are 120' x 60' the exterior walls are poured concrete, while the interior walls are typical commercial metal stud framing. The building is single story, and is on a slab foundation. There is no sub-floor or basement. The manufacturing facility and the warehouse both have an open 12' ceiling. The office areas have an 8' dropped ceiling. You can estimate the interior dimensions of the rooms if necessary.

How would you wire this building? Where would you locate drops? What networking equipment would you buy? What kind of cable? What kind of connectors? Don't forget data jacks, etc. What are your estimated costs (be sure to itemize).

The current data requirements would be met by either a 100mbps or 1000mbps network. Future plans call for increased use of technology and would greatly increase network traffic. Since RobCo is concerned about controlling costs, please give 2 specifications: one for 100mbps requirements and one for a higher bandwidth alternative (Note: you may need different cables, connectors, communications equipment and possibly tools for the high-speed infrastructure).

Your wiring plan should conform to the structured cabling standard addressed in a previous class. Additional information about structured cabling is available online and from the instructor.

As a contractor you will have to prepare a proposal. This document should include a description of what your firm proposes. Information such as wiring paths, number of drops per room, cable type, etc. should be included. The bulk of the proposal should be explanatory text, but you may also find it helpful to include charts, lists, diagrams, vendor literature, etc. as supporting documents. Remember: you are making a professional presentation to a prospective customer. Your project should be both well-researched and well presented.

You will also need to develop a cost estimate. In order to do this you will have to research the various cables, fittings, raceways, and components you plan to utilize. A contractor does not typically include the cost of tools in their estimate. Your proposal should include a list of these items including quantity and cost. Your have calculated your labor costs at $50 per man hour. Although cost is a factor in the RobCo decision, it is neither the only consideration nor the most important.

Week 2 – Equipment Room and Device Selection
You will need to select racks and communication devices for the newly constructed equipment room. You are not allowed to scatter communications equipment throughout the building. It must be located in the equipment room. You will also need to specify the proper equipment for building #2. You should consider cost, capacity/throughput, and security/management features when making your selections and creating the design. Please ensure that you have the proper cables to complete the connections. Remember that climate control can be a factor.

A rough diagram of the office is given below.

Week 3 – Wireless LAN/Conference Room
You can see from the floor plan distributed with the Week 1 materials that RobCo has a conference room. There is a large, heavy, solid and very expensive conference table in the middle of this room. The leadership at RobCo wants to use the conference room for training, presentations, and sales meetings. It will often be necessary for those attending the meeting/training to connect to the RobCo network for printing, file services, etc. The primary consideration for RobCo is that the room be very esthetically pleasing as well as functional. Although there are many possible approaches to networking this room, Rob has decided that a wireless solution might be best. As consultants you have been asked to incorporate wireless networking equipment, drops, etc. into your design.
Your primary considerations are: * You may not cut holes into the table. * You may not have cables, raceways, poles etc. cluttering up the room. * Whatever devices are necessary must be unobtrusive * The could be as many as 15 devices in the room that need to connect to the network * You will need to specify and estimate the cost for USB wireless adapter cards for various laptops. These cards should be compatible with various hardware/OS configurations. * There may eventually be a need for high-speed streaming audio and video over the network. * You will need to secure the wireless network to the best of your ability.
Week 4 - Wide Area Networks
RobCo requires an internet connection. They currently do not have an ISP. The bandwidth for this connection should be sufficient for 20 simultaneous HTTP users. There are also plans to transfer large files (1-4GB) across the internet. No file-swapping services will be allowed on the network.
You will need to specify a connection type (ISDN, Cable, ADSL, T-1, etc.), and the necessary equipment and/or software. Do not worry about the cost of the connection. If monthly charge information is easily obtained, you may include it. As an instructor, I have discovered that most communications carriers are unwilling to provide cost estimates for fictional projects.
Your primary considerations are: * The connection must be available 24x7 (no dialups). * You will need to select an ISP. * Since not everyone at RobCo will need (or should have) Internet access, your proposal should include some mechanism for limiting the access. * You will need to specify and estimate the cost for 10 PC/PCMCIA cards for various laptops owned by our independent distributors and business partners. To be used in the conference room. These cards should be compatible with various hardware/OS configurations. * There may eventually be a need for high-speed streaming audio and video over the network. * You will need to secure the wireless network to the best of your ability.

Week 5 – Backup/Redundancy/Disaster Recovery
RobCo considers that its investment in networking and information technology is crucial to its business future. One drawback to depending heavily on technology, however, is the potential disaster when it fails. As network consultants, you have been asked to help RobCo plan for the unforeseen. This week's objectives are: 1. RobCo is concerned about power loss. On average RobCo experiences 3-4 power outages per year. The duration of these outages ranges from a few seconds to a few hours. What would you propose that RobCo do to help cope with these outages? What devices or equipment would you recommend? 2. Equipment fails. Given enough time, ever piece of equipment will eventually fail. Since some prices of equipment are crucial, RobCo cannot afford to have them be unavailable. Identify key systems, and specify redundant systems. 3. Help RobCo devise a backup strategy for its key systems. Be sure to indicate a backup plan, reutilization and retention policy, and offsite storage scheme. 4. Help RobCo draft a disaster recovery plan.
Week 6 - NOS Selection/Hardware Upgrades
RobCo has finally made some decisions about their technology plan. After careful consideration they have determined what sorts of network applications and services they require. These decisions are listed below in no particular order.
1. RobCo will provide all employees with an internal email account to be used for business purposes only.
2. RobCo will provide some employees with an internet email account to use for business purposes.
3. Ideally, there should only be one email application both for internal email and Internet email. The network consultants will determine the most suitable messaging software.
4. Some users will need access to the World Wide Web in the course of their normal daily business, while other users will not be given this capability.
5. The company wants to have their own web server for their internet site. This server would be on site, and maintained by RobCo staff.
6. At some point the company plans to have an intranet for maintain, standards, policies, and other company documents. This will make this information available to the employees without RobCo having to re-print them every time a document is modified.
7. RobCo will purchase an integrated business application from a 3rd party vendor. The new business system will require that users desktops run at least Windows 2000. The client software is also compatible with Windows XP AND Windows Vista.
8. Most of the RobCo printers need to be available over the network.
9. Rob has decided that due to several recent individual lapses in the company's backup policy (currently each user is responsible for their own backups). Once the new network is place, there will be a centralized file server to which each individuals "My Documents" folder will mapped. In addition to this, there will several shared access folders on the server. The server drives will be automatically backed up on some sort of long-life media. The network consultants will specify hardware and software for this server, and will also create a detailed backup policy.
10. There should be some OS standard throughout the organization. Where possible there should be a hardware standard throughout the company. This will greatly simplify maintenance, administration, and troubleshooting. Of course, being a small company, RobCo will have to weigh the benefits of having standards against the cost required to do so.
The computers listed on the Week 1 component have the following technical specifications:
1. Accounting - * Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8400 (3.0GHz, 6M, 1333MHz FSB), Windows Vista Business, 4GB DDR2 SDRAM, 800MHz, (1DIMM), 80GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s and 8MB DataBurst Cache, Integrated Video, Intel GMA 4500, CD/DVD ROM, Integrated 100/1000 NIC * Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8400 (3.0GHz, 6M, 1333MHz FSB), Windows Vista Business, 4GB DDR2 SDRAM, 800MHz, (1DIMM), 80GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s and 8MB DataBurst Cache, Integrated Video, Intel GMA 4500, CD/DVD ROM, Integrated 100/1000 NIC * HP Laser Jet 4Plus

13. Adjacent Building Warehouse * Generic Celeron Dual Core 1.6 GHz, running Vista Home Ultimate, 2 GB RAM, 200 GB HD, integrated 10/100 Broadcom NIC

Week 7 – Servers
RobCo will need to deploy three servers. You will need to select the appropriate hardware and software for these systems. Uptime is very important and so you will need to incorporate redundancy into your proposal. It is also very important that these servers are no abruptly halted during a power failure; they need to be shut down properly. Don’t forget that frequent backups will be necessary.
One sever will have to handle Windows authentication, file sharing and printing for all of the desktop PC’s. There are several possible operating systems that can accommodate this need.
The second server will handle internal and external (internet) email in addition to hosting an internal (intranet) web server. Since no there are no email or webs servers currently in place you have a choice of operating systems and applications for this server.
The last server at RobCo will be running a server application built on the Oracle 10g Standard Edition RDBMS software. You do not have to purchase Oracle; that is outside the scope of this proposal.
You have the choice of either Windows or Linux as an operating system, but you will need to check the Oracle system specifications for the operating system you choose.
RobCo asks that you provide a backup policy, and information about backup media, rotation, and schedule.

Week 8 – Security
Security is a very important consideration at RobCo. You have been asked to include a security component in your proposal.

At minimum, you will need to incorporate the following items into your proposal. You will need to identify what technology/software is required.

* You should incorporate physical security into your proposal * The WAN link will need a firewall. * Client PC’s need firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware software. * The WLAN must be secured. * Clients should be authenticated before being allowed network access. * You will need to create an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) or Fair Use Policy for the RobCo network.

...Project Estimating Technique Paper By: Efrain Gonzalez Jr. CPMGT/303 October 6, 2014 Chanda Sanders This paper describes each of the project estimating techniques by explaining when each technique would be used, and how each technique is used. The information being explained provides sources of information that is needed to figure out the most appropriate technique for a project. When justifying an estimate there are certain tools you could use that will help one justify an estimate correctly, and the information being provide explains what tools will be used to justify estimates. Project estimating techniques and tools are important aspects needed to achieve the goal and objective of a project. An analogous estimation is a very common estimation technique used to estimate activities within a project through previous experiences with different projects and extrapolates onto the current project at hand. This technique is mainly used for projects that have the same type of work, and the same resources being used between projects. Parametric model estimation is another precise, easy, accurate technique that is used to estimate time, and resources needed within a project to perform activities. The use of this technique is created upon historical experiences, and lessons learned on different projects. The three point estimation techniques is used to clarify and understand levels of uncertainty within an estimation through the use of three sets of assumption that are all different...

...THE CONTRIBUTION OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF GHANA INTRODUCTION Project management as a management discipline underpins much economic activity. In industries as diverse as pharmaceuticals, software and aerospace, projects drive business. And in the public sector, it is effective project management that translates politicians' promises of new roads, schools and hospitals into gleaming new constructions that improve everyday life. The development of Ghana Successive Ghanaian governments pursued various models of economic development throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s. In the immediate post independent era of the early 1960s, Ghana’s economic development objectives were geared towards the ‘Big Push’ primary economic policies. These revolved around: a major investment effort; an industrialization drive; increased import substitution; processing of commodities and minerals previously exported in their raw form; and direct state participation in leading areas of the economy. The 1970s ushered in a policy of increased ‘Ghanaianisation’ or indigenisation with specified industrial activities reserved for state participation, Ghana-foreign ownership, and exclusive Ghana ownership, among others. The early 1980s saw the liberalization of the Ghanaian economy and the encouragement of foreign investments. All these approaches, however, fell far short of expectations and the failures were exacerbated by adverse terms of trade, falling commodity prices, and crippling debt by...

...State University of New York Empire State College, MBA Program Course 651644: Tools and Processes in Project Management Summer 2013 term Instructor: Dr. Adams Assignment #1: X-philes Data Management Corporation: RFP Matters By Jose M Collazo What is the basis for the problem? There are two primary problems with how X-philes Data Management Corporation handled the request for proposal. The first one was the lack of communication by the managers who selected the same vendor for two different projects. This problem led to the creation of the second problem which is proper resource allocation. When dealing with multiple projects with the same vendor, the company runs the risk of creating multiple interdependencies. Any resource allocation decisions made in one project by the vendor are likely to have ramifications in the other projects. According to Pinto, Some of the better known problems include inefficient use of resources, resource bottlenecks, ripple effects, and the heightened pressure on personnel to multitask (Pinto 2013). The personnel issue in particular, was a main cause of schedule slippage as employees quit at the contractor and they were unable to maintain sufficient staffing levels to keep the projects on track. While bottleneck’s restricts a vendor's ability to make money, they realize that the best way to maximize income is to fully exploit the bottleneck resource (Chakravorty & Atwater§, 2006)...

...with any project team is a lack of good communication. This type issue could arrise where team members are scareterd all over the world without face to face communication. The communication through the internet, skype or some of the other communication technologies that are now available are sometimes not reliable and could cause miscommunication. what about one of the team members performing one of the tasks without informing the other team members about it. Overdetermining - project managers sometimes overstates their capabilities of comleting a project on time. That is when a project will take say two months to accomplish they use presure or lack of experience or presure to perform even the other factors that ignores reality for something that is not imporsimble to accomples in the time given. When everyone is not available at the same time to work as a team on the project this could cause a delay to finish and deliver the project on time. The trade offs that is to make a clear policy of communication from the begining of the project that nobody goes off course and that everyone have to work as a team and must be on the sameline with everyone on the team. ...Research Project Management Key Concepts Dr Robin Henderson robin@myconsultants.net Research Project Management - Key Concepts © My Consultants Ltd 2010 Introduction The successful management of a research project depends upon the researchers ability to plan, coordinate and perform the research. Many researchers do not formally manage their research and whilst this does not necessarily mean that the research will not be completed successfully this approach has impacts on the staff whom are involved in the project. For example an unplanned approach can often lead to stress in members of the research team, crises management when deadlines are not effectively managed and the lack of time within the research to deliver effective outcomes for all the staff involved in the project. This short document outlines some of the key tools which you can utilise within research contracts to lead to more successful outcomes. Clearly understanding what success means for your project. The starting point for managing a project effectively is to have a clear understanding of what you are trying to achieve. A simple model to start to explore this is to distinguish between outputs and outcomes.  Outputs are the physical deliverables of the project  Outcomes are what happens as a result of the outputs For example in a clinical based trial the output could be a paper with the related outcome being the changes in clinical practise. The starting point for a project is to define what the desired outcomes...

...Projects Without Borders Elizabeth Harrin (October 5, 2006) Managing international projects requires much more than calculating that when it’s 9 a.m. in Paris, Texas, it’s 4 p.m. in Paris, France. Crosscultural teams and customers won’t necessarily work the same way as you. Here are some strategies for discovering the differences and dealing with them. As the world gets smaller, projects seem to expand to fill the available space, and now many of us are tackling the challenge of managing cross-cultural project teams and cross-cultural project customers. When your project team spans different countries, getting everyone together for a conference call is a new kind of administrative nightmare. But it’s not just the practicalities of working out time zone disparities and correcting the occasional bit of awkward grammar that make crossborder projects so challenging. National culture plays a big part in how we act and work. Get a group of people together from around the world and they can’t even agree on what noise a rooster makes, so how are they going to come to a conclusion on how to communicate project progress to the stakeholders?
