...New Heritage Doll (NHD) 1) Briefly discuss one aspect of the “capital budgeting process” at NHD that you believe may be problematic. Focus on the process as described in the case. The aspect of the capital budgeting process at NHD which could be problematic is the open nature of projects which are deemed to have a perpetual return. While the discount rate determination is also open to interpretation, there are only 3 options provided, and each can be run as a sensitivity analysis. For determining a value of a perpetual project (often via a terminal value), leaving the growth rate to be used open to interpretation can present challenges. Especially as these projects often tend to be dependent on or impact other projects. Evaluating them compared to other projects without a terminal value may result may be impossible. At the very least, a defined ranking of tools (for example: NPV, then IRR, then payback) and a defined process for comparing perpetual and non-perpetual projects would help to reduce this concern. Figure 1: The current process ------------------------------------------------- 1) Capital budget was set by the board of directors (in consultation with top officers, who drew on input from divisions). The Capital and operating budgets were linked, with capital being equal to approx. 15% of company’s EBITDA. ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- 2) Projects were set up and described by...

...potential problems allows project management to avoid pitfalls by pinpointing lapses in project health by providing early indicators of when vital components may go astray (Visitacion, 2007a, p. 75). EVM methodology gauges a project health by assessing three components; planned value, earned value, and actual cost. Furthermore EVM uses forward-looking capabilities to guide projects toward success. Although a very valuable tool, EVM is not a magical instrument that one can wave and expect it to produce desirable results 100% of the time, it requires the human touch, people with prior management knowledge, in order weigh the data (analysis) that EVM produces to gauge a project status, strengths, weaknesses, budget compliance. Perhaps the most important purpose of EVM is risk management or minimalizing risks that may be associated with a project. By using indicators to alert project management of certain problematic areas of a project; scheduling conflict, costs variances, and uncompleted tasks a project can be adjusted to bring it within budgeting compliance, scheduling plans, and organization goals. EVM accomplishes this feat by integrating cost management functionality with scheduling and budgeting information....

...features of expenses, incomes, ventures, developments, and improvements. The city examines the various features of the fiscal trepidations into the decision, along with respect to the financial plan. It is extremely important regarding what is required as one looks into the assessment and review process. One particular point that stands out for elements in the current budget, along with a projection for the future budget is the older financial plan, to get an idea of the best course of action for the budget. Cost tendencies and income of the past year from previous years may help with predicting what is required for the upcoming financial year. Currently, according to Chicago Tribune, “ The City of Chicago have long abused their borrowing privileges, spending fund meant for long-term initiatives on problematic short-term expenses from library books to legal settlement” (Chicago Tribune, 2014). In order to build a better future, Chicago used the powerful financial tool, which was general obligation bond that yield millions of borrowed dollars. The reason for bonds is to have money that can propel cities to a move forward on expensive project that will serve the community for decade to come. Chicago fell into the cycle of using bonds, which does not need voters’ permission before issuing bond, and when the city cannot pay back what is owes, it uses more borrowed money to leverage to push off payments on old bonds. This has become a terrible pattern of fiscal recklessness for...

...There are many benefits, challenges, and opportunities having a diverse society. It is important to realize that there are positive benefits to society when diversity is respected. Valuing diversity can open our minds to new and exciting experiences and to new ways of thinking which can make our lives more interesting. Society can also benefit by accepting diversity because by excluding minority groups we could miss their valuable contributions. Society has evolved due to diversity. We have adapted to the cultures, race, lifestyles, religion even food and music of different nationalities. There are also the challenges of diversity. Americans probably has the most cynicism of any cultures, due to the United States being the “land of the free” and many wanting to live the “American Dream”. With this comes prejudice and discrimination. Certain cultures believe that they are superior to all and this brings prejudice and discrimination. The hardest challenge is discrimination, whether it is against certain culture, religion, race or even skin color. There is also the growth of certain cultures. An example of a culture that tremendously expanded is the Hispanic population. “The Hispanic population grew by 43 percent, rising from 35.3 million in 2000 to 50.5 million in 2010.” Cencus.gov Here in the United States, Spanish is known as the second language next to English. There are many Americans that are prejudice against about this. Though you should not judge a book by its...

...of mood altering substances (Wallace, 2012). Additionally, I would like to develop insight into the process of addiction and the evidence based methods of treatment. My observations of impaired individuals tend to convince me of biopsychosocial reasons for substance abuse and associated behaviors. Therefore, my dream is to gain the knowledge to address the underlying motivation for substance abuse and addiction. (Walters & Rotgers, 2012). Employment Outlook As Miller, Scarborough, Clark, Leonard, and Keziah (2010) reported, the credentialing requirements for SACs vary significantly between the states. They asserted that the quality of substance abuse treatment is problematic at best, and they recommend unified SAC credentialing requirements within the US. Currently, educational standards are rising across the country (e.g., high school diploma vs. master’s degree), as SAC case loads increase. Additionally, Miller et al. (2010) comment (and I concur) on the difficulty in navigating the...

...Most enterprises already have a IT infrastructure in place, and are now taking the lessons they've learned from previous efforts to remedy problematic areas like data quality and infrastructure standardization. At the same time, many enterprises are also moving toward the next steps in the evolution of IT infrastructure and are adopting new technologies and approaches such as data management and computerized controls. Riordan Manufacturing would benefit tremendously by the implementation of an IT infrastructure. Currently, Riordan Manufacturing is suffering from corporate inefficiency that is detrimental to revenue and long term financial goals. An IT infrastructure would solve many of these problems. Cost savings would be realized through the reduction of duplicated efforts and service offerings across the corporation, lower maintenance support because of consistent hardware and software applications, and structured communication channels between departments and a newly formed corporate IT department (CIT). A CIO will provide technical leadership for IT related issues and Cost Centers will be created at each installation to adhere to strict purchasing guidelines. In addition, the CIO will establish Riordan Manufacturing’s online presence with an emphasis on streamlining processes, such as manufacturing and distribution, so they can do business more efficiently with their resellers and suppliers. While short term financial goals will be impacted by this sizable project,...

...Repression occurs when a person unconsciously holds back unwanted or stressful emotions to protect themselves from reliving or acknowledging an experience. A subject can repress certain thoughts in whole or partially depending on the extent of the trauma. While attending this class I have realized that since my early teens, I have been repressing emotions that stem from sexual abuse by a person who was both a family friend and our church pastor. This realization was brought to the forefront because my wife and children enjoy attending church services and participating in church related activities, while I will make up excuses to not attend. My lack of attendance at church is a frequent subject in our household and the cause of more than a few heated discussions. The thought of going to a church service makes me uneasy and I do it only after much prodding from my wife, but even then I only go for a couple of weeks before I start making excuses again. It was after one of these discussions that I decided to use the things I had read and try to understand why I don’t like going to church. That’s when I recognized the correlation between the abuse and my lack of interest in church. Now that I recognize my apprehension toward going to church services is because I’m trying to avoid the emotions from the abuse I am going to re-evaluate my views on attending church services. Who knows, maybe I’ll like going and that will make my wife happy and relieve some stress between us. I’m not...

...| Rosario Acero | Case Analysis | | | | | 1. Based on the forecasts in Exhibits 6 through 11, how will the two financing alternatives affect the performance of the firm? 2. What are the principal risks facing the firm? Sales The majority of the company’s sales are to integrated steel producers who value relationships with their suppliers; however, Rosario Acero decided to pay sales personnel a straight salary in order to cut costs. Not offering a sales commission does not incent sales personnel to develop or maintain relationships with their clients which, in turn, puts their ability to gain more orders at risk. Suppliers and Supply Costs Rosario Acero relies on one source for the scrap metal used in the production of rolls and castings- their chief products. In addition, scrap prices have risen month over month and accounted for 26% of the cost of goods sold in 1996. Unionized Workforce Rosario Acero employs a unionized workforce. Pending the expiration of their current contract, it is anticipated that the workers would demand a premium for staying with the firm through its difficulties which would mean an increase to the direct labor cost. Working Capital Loan Este took out an unsecured line of credit, estimated at $4.8MM in 1996, with a personal guarantee backed by real estate that he owned. The release of...

...Law of Attraction itself but rather by the Law of Attraction as applied to objective reality. Here are some of those problematic questions (all are generalizations of ones I received via email): * What happens when people put out conflicting intentions, like two people intending to get the same promotion when only one position is available? * Do children, babies, and/or animals put out intentions? * If a child is abused, does that mean the child intended it in some way? * If I intend for my relationship to improve, but my spouse doesn’t seem to care, what will happen? These questions seem to weaken the plausibility of the Law of Attraction. Sometimes people answer them by going pretty far out. For example, it’s been said by LoAers that a young child experiences abuse because s/he intended it or earned it during a past life. Well, sure… we can explain just about anything if we bring past lives into the equation, but IMO that’s a cop-out. On the other hand, objective reality without the Law of Attraction doesn’t provide satisfactory answers either — supposedly some kids are just born unlucky. That’s a cop-out too. I’ve never been satisfied by others’ answers to these questions, and they’re pretty important questions if the Law of Attraction is to be believed. Some books hint at the solution but never really nail it. That nail, however, can be found in the concept of subjective reality. Subjective reality is a belief system in which (1) there is only one...

...study helps to frame specific business scenarios so they can be studied in-depth. During this process the number of business alternatives under consideration is usually quickly reduced. However, when a company or a person attempt to conduct a Feasibility study there are some challenges that they may face and these challenges may form some obstacles against conducting a study will list some of these challenges: * How you will start? In order to conduct a Feasibility study for a business you need to assure that you are covering all the aspects related to your study. You need to be very clear about what parts you're going to address and how to work with your business colleagues to construct a coherent view. * What to do? Feasibility is hard to prove. To control this vagueness, implement a written plan of action. The inherent uncertainty makes planning a feasibility study harder than usual, although the project can fail only if the final report is inconclusive. * Wrong Team Any professional study is only as good as the team that does the work. Yet there is a tendency to try to find consultants who specialize in just one area, for example, restaurants, medical devices, social media, etc. This might seem to be the safest choice, but it can be overly restrictive and lead to highly formulaic outcomes. Selecting a consultant that specializes in only one area (for example nursing homes) can be particularly problematic if the project crosses...

Constant pressure must be applied quickly so as to deliver the medication before the patient retreats. Certain highly concentrated drugs may be delivered remotely by blowpipe, compressed air projector, or gun powder cartridge rifle.2 If well chosen, these methods have distinct advantages in their nearly silent projection with minimal trauma upon impact. 1 Drugs Early on, the standard of hoofstock immobilization was that achieved with succinyl choline chloride, a potent neuromuscular blocking agent that failed to induce unconsciousness or provide analgesia. Since then, ultra-potent opioids such as M99 etorphine, fentanyl, thiafentanil, and carfentanil have been used, often in synergistic combination with alpha-2-agonists like xylazine and medetomidine, the phenothiazine acepromazine, and the butyrophenones like azaperone and haloperidol. Hyaluronidase is often added to cocktails to enhance absorption, thus abbreviating...

...Making big decisions is not easy; in fact it might be one of the most difficult things we ever have to do. The tendency is to postpone decisions as long as we can and put of the pain. Deciding to not make a decision is a choice in itself. This particular case study is a problematic one, because there are many concerns to think through when trying to improve a budget Issues Kimu County’s economy is weakening due to reductions in federal and state grants, disapproved court decisions to increase spending on county correctional facilities, business failures, and rising unemployment. Two apparel factories closed creating five hundred unemployed workers and a five percent reduction in the county’s taxes. As a result of all the failing businesses and rising unemployment, the budget analysts are predicting serious revenue shortfalls. To measure the magnitude of the county’s revenue deficits, the board of commissioners held a meeting with Tom Liki and Rachel Timons to get an update on the revenue projections for the next fiscal year. Timmons noted that her office expected a shortage of $1.5 million for the next financial year if no additional revenue were raised. The Budget stabilization account that has help provide a cushion for Kimu County in the past, will not be able to cover the expected insufficiencies during the next fiscal year. Actors Tom Liki is the county administrator. He is likely to select safe, conventional or traditional approaches to budgeting and focuses on the...
