Nutritional Supplement Controversy I. Summary/Introduction
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a compound produced in the body, and stored within the mitochondria of cells, is used by the cells to help generate energy. In the article, 9 Benefits of Coenzyme Q 10 (2012) Semeco asserts that CoQ10, available in the form of an oral supplement, provides many benefits to a person’s health. Although CoQ10 is a substance that occurs naturally within the body, that does not necessarily make it safe for oral consumption for just anyone. Some people do have health conditions that cause potential deficiencies of CoQ10. As a person ages, the amount of CoQ10 within the body decreases. Persons suffering from nutritional…show more content… WebMD indicates that coenzyme Q10 might enhance the movement and density of sperm, however, this is only noted in men who have had at least 6 months of the supplement. Unfortunately, these improvements may not increase pregnancy rate ("Coenzyme Q10," 2018). Mayo Clinic indicates that a few studies proposed that coenzyme Q10 might increase sperm counts or sperm motility but did not seem to have any effect on the chances of getting pregnant ("Coenzyme Q10," 2017).
Might Keep Skin Young When CoQ10 is applied directly onto the skin, it may reduce damage caused by the sun, and increase protection provided by antioxidants. In addition, taking oral supplementation of CoQ10 might reduce the chances of getting skin cancer (Semeco, 2017). WebMD research indicates that there may be some benefit to wrinkled skin when CoQ10 is applied directly but acknowledges that more study is needed to confirm this hypothesis ("Coenzyme Q10," 2018). Mayo Clinic suggests that Coenzyme Q10 might decrease fine wrinkles located around the eyes and possibly provide some protection from sun damage ("Coenzyme Q10," 2017).
