With the coalition of Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu, came support for Kahanist policies from a sizable portion of the Likud Party, particularly the Lieberman Plan. While the plan has been stuck in legislative limbo for more than a decade now out of Israeli’s fear of retaliation from the United States under the Obama Administration, the Israeli right may feel that the international climate is better suited for such a plan behind the unwavering support from President Donald Trump. Despite its radical components, the bill has garnered almost unanimous support from the Israeli right, including Prime Minister Netanyahu. The bill provides legal precedent for Jewish communities to set up admission committees that can reject applicants based on their “threat” to the character of the Jewishness of the community. While this practice is already prevalent in many of these communities, the Jewish Nation-State Bill would provide its legal backing. Moreover, it prioritizes the rights of Jews over Arab-Israeli citizens by explicitly noting that the right of self-determination is strictly a right of Israel’s Jewish citizens. It would also drop the Arabic as an official language of Israel (Cook, 2018). While earlier versions of the bill advocated the implementation of Hebrew law as a basis for judicial decisions, these provisions were removed just before the Knesset placed the final version of the bill on the docket for a first vote.
