Are You Beach Body Ready?

Advertising is one of the most influential and prevalent art forms on Earth. Everyday people come face-to-face with a multitude of ads attempting to persuade viewers to invest in their products. Consumers continuously observe ads on billboards, television and all over the internet. While many ads prove to be unquestionably prosperous, a portion of ads become more well known for the controversy they bring along with them. One specific ad that got a lot of people talking was Protein World’s Are You Beach Body Ready? This advertisement encourages women to lose weight by using precise visualizations and inferring specific body standards, further insinuating that women must maintain a certain body image to be beautiful. …show more content…
Body shaming women is not a new concept, but it is becoming even more prevalent today since companies promote shame and anxiety as innovative marketing strategies. Dieting companies have determined that telling women they need to appear a certain way is highly effective and successfully results in them investing in their product. The ideal body shape that Protein World endorses consists of a very slender body that looks appealing in a bikini. When they ask the simple question “Are you beach body ready?” Protein World instantly captures the attention of women who do not have a slender frame or at least not as slim as the depicted model’s. Countless women tend to feel especially uneasy about their weight and figure as the weather begins to warm up, which is why dieting companies release a huge surplus of summer body related dieting commodities. Protein World takes advantage of this situation releasing a summer themed ad that endorses their weight loss products. They are confident that a huge portion of women will invest in their product so that they too can look like the woman featured on their ad. Body shaming has proven to be a highly effective way to advertise weight-loss products because it demonstrations what people can look like if they consume their product. The ad indirectly points out that if women do not have slender bikini bodies, then they are not truly beautiful or ‘ready to go to the beach.’ If the ad were not suggesting that beauty is determined by a thin ideal, then the model on the cover would have a more average body type. Also the inquisition “Are You Beach Body Ready?” seems to contain a condescending tone that subliminally asks the person “Are you considered beautiful by society?” This causes women to stop and contemplate about whether or not they actually are “beach body ready.” By putting a beautiful, skinny woman as the face of their product, Protein World emphasizes that she is beautiful because she is skinny.
