Pursuing Music In Thomas Quasthoff's Life

It’s no secret that music is an international art. Not only tapping into the creative imagination of the people who listen but inspiring people to speak without using words. According to greek philosopher Plato (427 B.C), “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and everything”. Moreover, in today’s society music has taken a left turn into a highway of misconceptions. Students that desire to pursue music as a career often dedicate a myriad of time refining their craft. This ultimately turns down the interested in young people. And if you were born with a physical or mental disability that hinders your time in a practice room, pursuing music can almost seem impossible. However, I took the time to research a handful of musicians that bring hope and motivation to the disabled community. These people have not only become famous but, have left their mark. In doing so, they inspired the music community to evolve and become more accepting.

His story starts at birth; where he was born with a serious birth defect. During the 1950s, it was fairly common for mothers that were pregnant to take a drug called thalidomide. Doctors would subscribe this drug as an antiemetic for morning sickness, however, little did they know that because of this a plethora of children were born with birth defects. Thomas was born with phocomelia of the upper extremities causing his legs and arms to be abnormally short. Thomas is recorded to be (4’ 4 ¾”) tall.
