...NUMBER SYSTEMS TUTORIAL Courtesy of: thevbprogrammer.com Number Systems Number Systems Concepts The study of number systems is useful to the student of computing due to the fact that number systems other than the familiar decimal (base 10) number system are used in the computer field. Digital computers internally use the binary (base 2) number system to represent data and perform arithmetic calculations. The binary number system is very efficient for computers, but not for humans. Representing even relatively small numbers with the binary system requires working with long strings of ones and zeroes. The hexadecimal (base 16) number system (often called "hex" for short) provides us with a shorthand method of working with binary numbers. One digit in hex corresponds to four binary digits (bits), so the internal representation of one byte can be represented either by eight binary digits or two hexadecimal digits. Less commonly used is the octal (base 8) number system, where one digit in octal corresponds to three binary digits (bits). In the event that a computer user (programmer, operator, end user, etc.) needs to examine a display of the internal representation of computer data (such a display is called a "dump"), viewing the data in a "shorthand" representation (such as hex or octal) is less tedious than viewing the data in binary representation. The binary, hexadecimal , and octal number systems will be looked at in the following pages. The decimal number system that...

...Sustainability and Information Technology: Nigeria’s Entry Strategy The following dialogue ensued between a father and a son. Son: Daddy, why did Nigeria not join the Agricultural and Industrial Revolution? Father: We were not an independent nation; we were being colonized by the British Government, the father muttered. Son: It’s ok Daddy, the boy exclaimed. At least now that we are an independent nation, we will take advantage of the Information Technology (IT) Revolution. Father: I hope so too, my son. I write this article with so much enthusiasm and vigor that Nigeria will be able to take advantage of the IT revolution. However, for us to take advantage of the IT revolution, we need to make a sustainable investment that will enable our unborn children benefit from the legacies we leave behind for the next generation. Sustainability originates from the Latin word sustinere (meaning to hold) and in human terms, sustainability is the long-term management of the environment, economy and social entities on the face of the earth. In the articles context, we wish to adopt sustainability as a vehicle that will enable us deliver a long term strategy that will enhance Nigeria socio-economic development. So the big question is: 1. How will Information Technology sustain Nigeria’s Economic growth? 2. What strategy can Nigeria adopt to become an IT-driven nation? Let me begin the question by answering question number 2, the reason being that Information technology has become...

According to Trost, S (2001), “At the time of distribution, students were given a 7 day log sheet to record the times the monitor was worn and to provide information about participation in non-weight bearing activities such as swimming, cycling and weight training”. The following week when the students returned their monitors the information on them were moved and save to a private computer for the following data reduction and analysis. The data reduction and the conclusion of this study according to Trost, S (2001) was done by, “Minute-by-minute activity counts were uploaded to a QBASIC data reduction program written by the primary author for determination of time spent in moderate (3-5.9 METs) and vigorous ( 6 METs) physical activity during each 60 min segment of the 7 day monitoring period”. ...

...Chapter 1 Structure and Functions of a Computer "Hardware: the parts of a computer that can be kicked." ~ Jeff Pesis After completing this chapter, you will be able to: 1. Explain the importance of computer literacy. 2. Define the term computer. 3. Identify the components of a computer. 4. Compare the uses of various types of: input devices, output devices, and storage devices. 5. Describe categories of computers and their uses. Structure and Functions of a Computer 1 1.0 Introduction A computer is an electronic machine designed for the storage and processing of data. The machinery is called hardware, and this highly sophisticated equipment needs equally sophisticated programs (called software) to become a working computer system. Modern society has come to depend very heavily on the use of computer systems. Banks, businesses, government departments, industries, shops, people at home and school all rely on computer to play a vital role in their daily activities. These activities are centered on information. In business, the computer system has been used a lot and replaced filing cabinets as means of storing information, and clerical workers as a means of processing it. By storing and processing information on a computer system, these businesses can function more quickly and efficiently, because information can be found and collated much faster. Discovery Learning: A computer was also called a data processor. Why? 1.1 Major Parts and Functions A Computer is...

...1970’s: Smalltalk is an object-oriented, dynamically typed, reflective programming language. Smalltalk was created as the language to underpin the "new world" of computing exemplified by "human–computer symbiosis."[1] It was designed and created in part for educational use, more so for constructionist learning, at the Learning Research Group (LRG) of Xerox PARC by Alan Kay, Dan Ingalls, Adele Goldberg, Ted Kaehler, Scott Wallace, and others during the 1970s. The language was first generally released as Smalltalk-80. Smalltalk-like languages are in continuing active development, and have gathered loyal communities of users around them. ANSI Smalltalk was ratified in 1998 and represents the standard version of Smalltalk. Compiler Description Language, or CDL, is a programming language based on affix grammars. It was designed for the development of compilers. It is very limited in its capabilities and control flow; and intentionally so. The benefits of these limitations are twofold. On the one hand they make possible the sophisticated data and control flow analysis used by the CDL2 optimizers resulting in extremely efficient code. The other benefit is that they foster a highly verbose naming convention. This in turn leads to programs that are to a great extent self-documenting. The original version, designed by Cornelis H. A. Koster at the University of Nijmegen emerged in 1971. Pascal is a historically influential imperative and procedural programming language, designed in...

...Computer A computer is a programmable machine that receives input, stores and manipulates data, and provides output in a useful format. A computer can process data, pictures, sound and graphics. They can solve highly complicated problems quickly and accurately. Block Diagram Input Unit: Computers need to receive data and instruction in order to solve any problem. Therefore we need to input the data and instructions into the computers. The input unit consists of one or more input devices. Keyboard is the one of the most commonly used input device. Other commonly used input devices are the mouse, floppy disk drive, magnetic tape, etc. All the input devices perform the following functions. Accept the data and instructions from the outside world. Convert it to a form that the computer can understand. Supply the converted data to the computer system for further processing. Storage Unit: The storage unit of the computer holds data and instructions that are entered through the input unit, before they are processed. It preserves the intermediate and final results before these are sent to the output devices. It also saves the data for the later use. Memory Size: All digital computers use the binary system, i.e. 0’s and 1’s. Each character or a number is represented by an 8 bit code. The set of 8 bits is called a byte. A character occupies 1 byte space. A numeric occupies 2 byte space. Byte is the space occupied in the memory. The size of the primary storage...
