...conflict may or may not lead to felt conflict. Felt conflict is “felt” in the form of anxiety, tension and/or hostility. The final stage is manifest conflict. Manifest conflict is not only perceived and felt, but is acted upon. At work I recently was witness to the progress of conflict in these three stages between two employees. One employee was very shy, quiet and kept to himself. On the other hand another employee was outspoken, rude and disrespectful. It was a known fact that conflict between the two existed, also known as perceived conflict. The loud employee one day said to the quiet “why don’t’ you ever talk or have friends.” The individual kept quiet but this type of action moved the conflict into the “felt” stage since obvious feelings such tension and hostility became present. Eventually, it moved into the manifest conflict stage. The quiet employee printed off a personal bank statement and went to pick it up at the printer and oddly enough the loud disrespectful employee was reading it and laughing. In a disordered world that circles with fear and confusion, it is difficult to find. The concept faced and feared by all is the idea of death. It is not the act of dying that humankind desires to avoid, but the unknown beyond it. It is obvious through culture how the world fears death; movies, literature, and general behavior prove it. However, there are few who contradict the idea that death is dark and forbidding. In a poem called ‘Death is a Door,’ the author, Nancy Byrd Turner, writes, “Death is only a quiet door / in an old wall” (11-12). Some believe that death can be approached peacefully, rather than unwillingly. In the poem ‘Let Evening Come,’ Jane Kenyon uses various poetic devices, such as imagery, repetition, and symbolism, to create a peaceful mood. The peace the reader feels while reading the poem is the peace that can be adopted when crossing the threshold into death. Imagery is one of the most important literary devices a writer could use. Imagery allows the reader to become a part of the story and to interact with characters. Without imagery, there is no picture or setting, only empty words and actions that cannot be understood. In the 1984 movie, the game of chicken is introduced when Ren is challenged to play chicken on farm tractors on a narrow road. Now in the 2011 movie, Ren and Chuck play chicken using derby busses to play the game, by racing in a figure eight (with four busses total making sure to not go too fast or too slow). What exactly does Fowler represent? Is it the wisdom and world-weariness of Old Europe or Britain’s involvement in the war simply for personal gain? | The symbolism of the individual characters has to be placed within the context of colonialism, since that was the relationship between the nations they each represented. Pyle's motives are far from heroic. An idealism that is motivated by interventionism in a Third World country's affairs can be dangerous and destructive, not only in the way Graham Greene saw it in the early fifties, but as history proved it by the events that unfolded years later, leading to the US war in Viet Nam.
