In a study done in New York City in 2010, they found a nine times greater likelihood in which African Americans are stopped by the police (Hayle, Wortley, & Tanner, 2016). This tells us that racial profiling is still a major issue. I believe the most effective way to determine to what extent, if any, our department has an issue with racial profiling is to compile statistics from any encounters with the police. My department currently has us turn in a daily report listing those encounters and our dispositions with each individual. It also has us list the race and gender of each person so that we can see the percentages at the end of each month and year. There is no way to answer this question without looking farther into what racial profiling is, and what affects it has on people.
