JC Penney as a retailer created a buzz about themselves with their pricing strategy and coupons that they offered to their consumers. Consumers often discuss the sales and the great price of a sale of items amongst themselves. This was definitely a strength for this retailer. JC Penney was also a great place to shop for big and tall in a concrete building and store, not a catalog that was another appeal to their consumers. J.C. Penney was using a decentralized system of purchasing merchandise and inventory while other companies began to use centralize systems. To centralize the buying activities and revamp the stores, funds were needed. Funds were raised through the sale of JCP’s Direct Marketing Services, which sold insurance and travel and auto club programs. It led to a significant improvement of cash flow. Using detailed data from US SEC Accounting and Auditing Enforcement Releases (AAER), we examine the likelihood and timing of analyst coverage decisions and recommendation revisions related to fraud firms versus firms without accounting fraud. We find that analysts have a higher probability of taking the more severe action of dropping coverage rather than only revising down recommendations for firms with any type of accounting fraud and also for specific egregious types of accounting fraud. Lease, Norwich University Abstract This paper presents an analytical and comparative study of four recent corporate scandals involving organizations that had previously been recognized as both ethically and organizationally sound. Based on these case studies, the following issues are discussed: (1) The role of leader behavior and organizational/leadership styles in shaping the corporate organizational culture of an organization, and (2) The extent to which this culture renders the organization and its members (including the top executives) prone to ethical misbehavior. The four companies selected for this case analysis are: Enron Corporation, WorldCom, Inc., Tyco International, Ltd., and HealthSouth Corporation. Each case is considered individually. The basic elements in the scandal are outlined and the principal aspects of each organization’s corporate culture discussed, with special emphasis on the influence of leadership styles and leadership behavior/practices on organizational culture.
