...RED, WHITE, BLUE AND YOU Or, The Color of Politics An Essay by Charles Ebeling Presented at the Chicago Literary Club Election Eve, November 5, 2012 Copyright 2012 Charles Ebeling Dedicated to the memory of my good friend and neighbor Marshall J. Goldsmith Who was my guest at the Literary Club, October 24, 2011 Some us recall a great 1986 film called “The Color of Money,” and no, cynics, it wasn’t about politics. That film earned Paul Newman the Oscar for Best Actor as a pool hustler and stakehorse, who enjoyed a glass or two of J.T.S. Brown Kentucky bourbon, my favorite beverage from college days. But, unless I’ve missed a documentary or foreign film along these lines, I haven’t yet seen a dramatization called “The Color of Politics.” Yes, there is such a thing as “The Politics of Color,” but as social commentary, not as a film title. “The Color of Politics” is equally real though, and has a long history. I first dabbled in the palette of politics on election eve, 2008, when I presented before the club on that occasion an essay I’d titled “One Collage Too Many,” painting...

...Running head: RWBFC Scheduling at Red, White and Blue Fireworks Company Shelia Iceson Operations Management Dr. Kyle Peacock December 12, 2011 Develop a staffing plan for RWBFC in accordance with the constraints stated in the case. This staffing plan recognizes the significant commitment of human resources necessary to accomplish the job and its requirements. It also recognizes that the Red, White and Blue Fireworks Company (RWBFC) must continue to provide a high level of service and maintain the same level of productivity while this project is underway. The Red, White and Blue Fireworks Company’s staffing strategy is to minimize labor costs by staffing only what is needed for current production due to its inability to expand at the current facility. Staffing levels are rebuilt or contracted as determined by production schedules and as reflected by staffing requirements and constraints. To minimize the potential for over or under staffing, hiring should be based on a review of RWBFC’s production schedule and a review of at least 2 to 3 months forecasting. In order to develop the staffing plan for RWBFC the basis of estimate analysis needs to be used, considering the following constraints: * RWBFC needs to operate ten hours a day * RWBFC needs to operate seven days a week * Employees must have three consecutive days off * The manufacturing process requires a minimum of 20 employees The following table represents a simple schedule...

...A Christmas Tuna This play takes place in a small town called Tuna, Texas. It is centered on the town's annual Christmas Yard Display Contest. While everyone is preparing for the big Christmas lawn contest, an anonymous “Christmas Phantom," known for vandalizing yard displays, threatens to destroy the contest and turn it into chaos. While several characters are shown, some main characters are the Bumiller’s and Joe Bob Lipsey. All characters, including men, women, and children, are played by two actors who sufficiently play each role. As the play begins there are two announcers who announce the Christmas Yard contestants and where we meet several of the characters. We are informed that one of the characters Vera Carp, has won the contest 14 times in a row. Bertha Bumiller desperately tries to convince Charlene Bumiller to get into the Christmas spirit. We also learn that Stanley Bummiller, who brings home a pregnant cat and is Charlene’s twin, is attempting to end his probation from jail by helping with the production of A Christmas Carol. The actors do a stupendous job at keeping the audience entertained and keep us laughing. We then meet Vera Camp, the town snob, tries to help Bertha redecorate her Christmas tree. We learn that Bertha’s husband, Hanks, wallet is found in front of the Star Light Hotel, as it is assumed that he has been cheating on her but Bertha will not leave him. ...Patriotism and Toby Keith Ever since 2001, America has gone though many different moods. The mood of the society is often portrayed through music. It is hard to believe that music can have such a large impact on society, but I think society has impacted music. Tragedies and victories throughout history have impacted musical artists and how they express themselves. This is because artists use their voice to express their feelings. People most often accept the music because they feel the same way but do not know how to express their true emotions. Music provides a distraction from these feelings if the artists can capture the current feeling of society into a song. The few artists who are able to do this are among the most popular in history. One artist that represents the emotion of America after the tragedy of the suicidal bombing of the twin towers on September 11, 2001 is country singer Toby Keith. On September 11, 2001, the unexpected occurred when the two world trade centers, now American symbols of hope, faith, and commitment, were destroyed by terrorist bombs. Commitment to your country. Commitment to patriotism. As history is bound to repeat itself, it was time for a new musical artist to capture the hearts of the American people and provide a distraction from reality and a sense of hope for society to believe in. One of the few artists that emerged from the rebel of war was Toby Keith. Although communication researchers predicted that hit songs immediately following...

...IELM4410 Homework 2 Due: 6 Oct. 2015 (Tuesday) in class Problem 1 Company A is planning to design a key component for their product with company B. Company A will integrate the component with some software and then sell it to customers. Given the short life cycles of such products and long lead times quoted by Company B, Company A only has one opportunity to place an order with Company B prior to the beginning of its selling season. Company A’s demand during the season is normally distributed with a mean of 1,000 and a standard deviation of 600. Company B’s production cost for the component is $52 per unit and it plans to sell the component for $72 per unit to Company A. Company A incurs essentially no costs associated with the software integration and handling of each unit. Company A sells these units to consumers for $121 each. It can sell unsold inventory at the end of the season in a secondary market for $50 each. The existing contract specifies that once Company A places the order, no changes are allowed to it. Also, Company B does not accept any returns of unsold inventory, so Company A must dispose excess inventory in the secondary market. 1) What is the probability that Company A’s demand will be more than 40% greater than its forecast? 2) Under this contract, how many units should Company A order to maximize its expected profit? For Questions 3) to 5), assume Company A orders 1,200 units. 3) What are Company A’s expected sales? 4) How many units of inventory...

...the analysis process. Our learning team chose to evaluate the sample business plan found at www.entrepreneurmag.co.za for a florist in Georgia by the name of Red White & Bloom. Red White & Bloom is a florist located in the heart of Castleberry Hill, just outside of Atlanta, GA. This specific location was chosen by Jamie Muir, the majority owner, as it is an arts district for leading Atlanta Galleries. (Muir, p 6). Red White & Bloom Mission Red White & Bloom’s mission is to utilize technology in a unique and sophisticated manner to target their ideal market and network with both local businesses and customers. We will analyze the business plan provided by Muir (2009) using the SWOT analysis method. By evaluating an organization and some of their strengths, possible weaknesses, areas of opportunity and potential threats can help the business make informed decisions regarding their strategies moving forward. Strengths The first step of our analysis process is to weigh the strengths of the business. Red White & Bloom has many strengths according to their written business plan. Muir intends to incorporate the business of fresh, high quality flower arrangements into the local community via marketing tactics. ...To What Extent Was the Red Victory in the Civil War Due to the Skill and Leadership of Trotsky? The red victory in the civil war in 1919 may have been due to the skill and leadership of Trotsky who was the founder and first leader of the Red Army. As well as this there were other factors which contributed such as geographical factors, the unity and organisation of the reds and the support that they had. The reds were victorious in the civil war due to the skill and leadership of Trotsky who had been made commissar for war in 1918. He restored harsh military discipline and professionalism to the ‘worker’s and peasants red army’ by reintroducing the death penalty for those who did wrong which meant that men were made to fight as more of an effective fighting force. He also reorganised the army and so it had a strict hierarchy and he brought back thousands of former Tsarist officers to train and command the units. To do this he held their families hostage which meant that their loyalty was ensured. In addition to this he attached a political commissar to each army of the unit and ended soldiers committee’s and officer’s elections which meant that the loyalty of the officers was ensured so he would retain power, For those men who were unable to fight, due to age or physical inability, formed labour battalions. This meant that the Front received more help and nobody had an excuse to not fight in the army and so it would prevent people from thinking they could use injuries to get...

...in which I live, Red Wing, Minnesota, has been the immigration and relocation destination of Hispanics and African Americans over the past 10 years, and a Native American reservation is located less than 10 miles from the city. All three of these groups have contributed to Red Wing’s economy, workforce, services, and housing. I will be analyzing the influence that race has on Red Wing in terms of neighborhoods, employment, and other environments with which I am familiar. I will also be comparing myself to others in the community and examining our differences and similarities in regard to lifestyle, culture, background, and community acceptance. I will not only unveil racism and inequality within Red Wing, but I will also give examples to prove that the City of Red Wing takes these matters very seriously and is taking immediate and effective steps to both embrace diverse ethnicities and educate the community about diverse cultures in hopes to promote tolerance and acceptance. The population of Red Wing, last recorded in July, 2007 at over 15,000, is made up of 93% White Non-Hispanics, 2.6% American Indians, 1.3% African Americans, 1.3% Hispanics, 0.8% two or more races combined, and 0.5% other races. Of the 15,000 residents, 1.3% are foreign born, a low percentage compared to the 5.3% foreign born residents living in the entire state of Minnesota (Red Wing, 2007). The main two ancestries in Red Wing are German and Norwegian. I fall into both the White Non-Hispanic race...

...extent, the Red victory in the Russian Civil War was due to the White’s weaknesses. However, a combination of these weaknesses together with the Bolsheviks own strengths were responsible for the defeat of the Whites, in terms of resources and geographical location, political support, leadership and foreign help. In terms of geography and resources, the Reds had control over the more densely populated areas in western Russia. That area was populated by some 70 million people, in comparison to the 20 million in the Whites controlled areas, which meant they could recruit more people. This gave the Reds a huge numerical advantage, White generals only had between 250,000 men at their disposal whereas the Red army counted with 400,000 men in 1919 and over 5 million by the end if the Civil War. It was a central area that was easier to defend and in which to keep internal lines of communication. In contrast, the White armies were physically separated, which made the coordination of their military actions more difficult. For example, in 1919 General Denikin’s forces were defeated in the south-east region of Russia due to his inability to organize a strategic plan with Kolchak, which would have proved a great danger for the Bolsheviks. Another key advantage was that the areas under Red control included the industrial centres of the country, Petrograd and Moscow, which meant they had the capacity to manufacture armaments and not be dependent on foreign assistance, as the Whites were. Also...
