...Why people go to the Theatre; A qualitative study of audience motivation RES/341 Research and Evaluation I 02/19/12 Why people go to the Theatre; A qualitative study of audience motivation “Critical thinking is the disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. In its exemplary form, it is based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness.” (The Critical Thinking Community, 2011). The benefits of critical thinking include confidence, justice, mental improvements, stay open-minded, integrity, courage, empathy and perseverance. There are two characteristics of Critical thinkers; strong sense and weak sense approaches to critical thinking. The weak sense tends to be a self-centeredness, selfish way of thinking that uses lower-level skills of argumentation, and attempt to make unreasonable thinking look reasonable and reasonable thinking look unreasonable, according to our readings. This form of thinking can be easily seen in unethical lawyers, prosecutors, and politicians who are more concerned with winning than with being fair. Many have remain uncertain about it and others are dissatisfied with whether most of the studies that measure the effectiveness of this form of advertising generate reliable and valid results that can be interpreted and applied with confidence. Contributors to the study provide information both verbally and in the form of print and online materials. The type of information that was gathered specifically for this Internet Advertising Bureau or (IAB) project addresses the following major issues: 1. External validity and coverage error issues 2. External validity and sampling error issues 3. External validity and non-response error issues 4. Statistical conclusion validity, weighting and adjustment error issues 5. Internal validity, allocation to treatment and control/comparison groups and inference issues To provide a scientific structure to the information that was gathered for this evaluation, the author employed two methodological and statistical framework which address the validity and reliability of the research. ...Current Business Research Project Sharron Jones University of Phoenix Res/341 Jim Triplett June 13, 2011 Current Business Research Project This paper is a synopsis of a research study in price knowledge measurement scales used in the food and clothing retail industry. This paper will define and identify the business research, purpose of the study, problems under investigation, methods of data collection, and the ending result. The article this synopsis is based on is “On the Validity of Price Knowledge Measurements via self-assessment scales: two studies in retail” (Eberhardt, Kenning, & Schneider, 2009, p. 1). Business research is defined “as a systematic and organized effort to investigate a specific problem encountered in a work setting that needs a solution” (Sekaran, 2003, p. 5). The business research used in respect to price knowledge measurement includes addressing self-assessment versus percentage absolute deviation (PAD), and the retail branch of food versus clothes. The problem under investigation is determining the validity of scales used to measure consumer price knowledge used in marketing to influence market price and profit (Eberhardt et al., 2009, p. 1). Previous research is outdated and does not consider important factors such as brand power, or demographics, and was performed from the viewpoint of a researcher and not the consumer (Eberhardt et al., 2009, p. 2). The researchers performed separate studies in food and clothing retail in Germany...

...Business Research Ethics Bobbie Stolze RES/351 October 15th, 2012 James Malachowski Business Research Ethics Today there are many cases of unethical business research that usually result in entire firms as well as individuals that are convicted and fined in the court of law. Unethical business research comes in many forms some of these forms are inappropriate questionnaires, research fraud, failure to maintain participant’s privacy, and even skewing research results. The following information is regarding scientific research fraud involving William McBride. McBride was an obstetrician who was found guilty of 24 counts of scientific fraud that ended up costing between five and seven million dollars after all was said and done. In 1980 McBride had announced that thalidomide was dangerous to women who are pregnant. He claimed that the drug would cause deformities of the limbs in mother’s unborn children. Several years later McBride had claimed that he completed research on another drug called Debendox, which is a drug used for treating morning sickness for pregnant women. McBride published this research and claimed that he has tested the drug on eight rabbits, and three of the rabbits ended up developing deformities because of the drug Debendox. Shortly following McBride’s research, the manufacturer of Debendox was forced to take the drug off the market even though there were only a few supporters of his research claim. It was later discovered by Phil Vardy was a scientist...

Business needs to adapt or overcome the phases of changes to prevent possible failure. Business research is a vital tool companies use for ‘‘finding solutions to a problem after a thorough study and analysis of the situational factors’’. Once employees go through the research phase the company can make a logical decision to help the business grow. This paper will cover the various factors of business research and its purpose in a company. ...Mason, Becky Matlock, and Nichole Noble RES/341 June 8, 2011 David Morrisson Data Collection Paper (MLB) Data collection is an important part of research and it requires that the right information be collected. Because of many types of data research it is imperative to make sure the data collected is present in the final analysis. This data can be shown in different formats such a graphical or tabular. Team A has chosen the Major League Baseball (MLB) data set and feels the population and the type of data collected will provide good resources for surveys to make informed decisions. Team A will review the types of ways data can be shown as well as some of the ethical issues that researchers may run into. Our research involves looking at the 30 MLB teams in how the statistics vary. The data set is a accumulation of information that includes what league they are in, the year of erection of each stadium, capacity of each stadium, salary of the team, wins for the season, batting average, attendance, earned run average (ERA), stolen bases (SB), and home runs (HR). The sample for this research topic is very sufficient. It includes all the teams in the league and portrays the same information for all of the teams. The population (teams) and the categories listed in the data set will provide Team A the information to complete our research into whether or not a higher salary will make a team better...

...reasoning of genre- combination of situation and forms- provides researchers a way to analyze the similarities of documents in order to compare the disciplinary differences in styles of expression. The research paper is an important example of the research genres and a typical way of constructing new knowledge in academic discourse. According to Giltrow, successful writing depends upon readers’ recognition of features of genre. Therefore academic writers do not only need to make the results of their research public, but also persuasive. (Ken hyland, 1999) Citation, which is one of the most remarkable features appearing in scholarly articles, brings out a common ground shared by readers and writers to review the validity and novelty of both previous and current argument.(Ken hyland, 1999; Giltrow, 2009) The relationship between different citation forms and different disciplines has been investigated by many researchers. Hyland, who is a professor of applied linguistics, has done immense amounts of research in investigating the similarities and variability of citation in 8 disciplines. He suggests the disciplinary convention of citation usage and the motives behind those patterns. However, Hyland neglects the variation of citation practice that may occur in journal articles of different research directions within a discipline. The main purpose of this study is to examine the potential citation patterns of introduction sections employed by the articles in clinical and experimental subfield...

...CRITICAL APPRAISAL Introduction Published research must be able to withstand scrutiny in order to show the validity and reliability of the research conducted. By critically appraising a piece of research work, we can draw a conclusion on whether the research undertaken is trustworthy and relevant or not. The application of the CASP checklist for randomized controlled trials as a framework will be important in the systematic and critical appraisal of any article. Therefore, I will evaluate the article ‘Evaluation of a Belly Board immobilization device for rectal cancer patients receiving pre-operative chemoradiation’ by Gaya et al. (2014). The appraisal will not only show the strengths, but also the weaknesses in several parts of the article. Title The title of the article for appraisal is ‘Evaluation of a Belly Board immobilization device for rectal cancer patients receiving pre-operative chemoradiation’. This article was written by Gaya et al... The article was published by the Cambridge University Press in volume 13 of the Journal of Radiotherapy in Practice, from pages 403 to 409. The title is self-explanatory, in that it has shown the purpose of the research, which is to evaluate a belly board immobilization device for patients who are suffering from rectal cancer and are receiving pre-operative chemoradiation. With such a title in place, there is specificity in place. However, the title failed to show the setting in which the research trial was done. The reader is left to...

...the research study titled “Monsters in the Dark and Other Scary things: Pre-schoolers self- report” by Loxton and it will evaluate whether this study was conducted in a child-friendly and ethically accountable way. Research is the gathering and forming of collections of information focused on a particular topic or task and with regards to psychology, qualitative research is found to be the most useful and accurate as it tries to find a deeper understanding of the person’s inner most emotions and experiences. Research ethics “are guidelines researchers have to follow to protect the rights of humans participating in research” (Louw & Louw. 2007: 43) and serve the purpose of protecting the rights of participants in any research and consists of a number of guidelines in which researchers have to adhere to. This essay will evaluate this study according to the guidelines provided by the Psychological Society of South Africa which ensures that all the rights of participants participating in research are protected. Research and tests conducted using humans need to be consistent for the group of people in which are being used, such as different cultures or nationalities as well as being “valid, reliable and normed.” (Louw & Louw. 2007: 43) The research ethics committee of South Africa defines its role as “to safeguard the dignity, rights, safety and well- being of all trial participants” (Research Ethics Committee South Africa Health Department. 2005) and any research wanting...

...RESEARCH METHODS IN CRIME AND JUSTICE CHAPTER 1 – THE RESEARCH PRACTICE Chapter Review Questions Respond to each of the following questions using the information from this chapter. 1. During a recent meeting of the command staff at a mid-sized police department, the chief asks the patrol captain for his recommendation for new flashlights. The captain responds, “I did a little research and I recommend that we purchase the DryLight, Model X flashlight”. The patrol captain’s research consisted of “asking a few of the officers” what they thought would be a good flashlight. Did the patrol captain actually conduct research? Why or why not? ANSWER: Technically, the patrol captain did some research. He conducted interviews which is a form of data collection. One could argue, however, that the patrol captain’s research was limited (pp. 7-8). 2. Respond to the following statement in 3-5 sentences: Conducting research in the social sciences and in criminal justice in particular is easier than in other sciences because the things we measure are so vague that nobody really cares if we get it right or not. ANSWER: Generally speaking, social science research is more challenging than some of the ‘hard sciences’ because the things social scientists study are difficult to measure objectively. As a result social scientists spend a great deal of time justifying how they measure concepts to their peers (pp. 4-5). 3. Read the following scenarios and identify which of the following...
