...In early August 2015, I relocated to Jacksonville to embark on my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) at the University of North Florida (UNF). This marked a definitive step in my career transition process. Approximately three years ago, several life and work related events converged which caused me to re-evaluate my life. Personal triggers included - turning 50, my husband’s health issues and his post-retirement life-style change and my mother’s retirement and her subsequent move to Jacksonville. At work, I was charged with the assessment of Obamacare and the implementation of the Health Exchange for Medicaid products; areas which I oversaw. I was also selected by senior executives at the corporation where I was employed to participate in the Executive Leadership Program for America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). Despite having been certified from the prestigious program and recognized by internal and external entities as a leader and subject matter expert in my field, I was becoming increasing disenchanted at work. I was not able to break the “glass ceiling”. Those at the executive levels were (and are) mostly white males. Minorities (non-whites, non-hetero males and females) were already in place. There appeared to be no need to admit additional “tokens” to fulfill an appearance of diversity at the upper echelons. When I evaluated the impact of Obamacare, I predicted the need for substantial downsizing due to automation and projected revenue...

Life seems unpredictable in most cases and, as a result, all young people approach the future as blind nomads. In life, most people tend to believe that they will remain the same as they seem now in the next decade. Regardless of the age of an individual, they always tend to act in a way that suggests that history shaped them to the people they become. One thing remains certain, personalities and values keep changing. I will experience a lot of differences in 2025 as compared to now 2015. ...Reflective Paper BSHS/345 Suzanne Reed Professor: Dr. Tristram Jones Introduction There are so many factors that can happen to anyone that encounters difficulty in life. The particular groups that are going to be encountered in this reflection are generational poverty, older adults, and women. ...the saddest, the easiest and the hardest of my entire life”. To understand aging in a deeper aspect, I interviewed my grandmother, Meemaw, as she is the oldest living person in my family. She has lived in many places, and experienced many things throughout her life, and continues to live what she and I deemed to be a fulfilling life. Below I will describe ideas discussed in class, such as creativity, family interactions and support, thoughts on nursing homes and care facilities, and fulfillment in aging and add a personal touch to these ideas through the words of my grandmother. ...Employee Retention, Engagement, and Careers Chapter 9 offers some good advice and tools for managing careers. We will discuss building effective communications through fair treatment programs and employee discipline. In addition we will discuss proper handling of dismissals and separations, including retirement. In recent years, many employees from the “baby boom” generation have taken early retirement. However, experts believe the next generation will have to work longer than they would wish in order to fund those who are retiring now. The Social Security Administration has increased the age at which future generations will be eligible for benefits. Management will need to find ways to stimulate career interests of older employees to keep them motivated and productive. Firms also will need to find ways to ease labor shortages by attracting those to return who already have retired. Let’s discuss these and other issues. She called me for some advice regarding a potential pursuit in a career as a physician. She also wanted information on where the best locations to practice medicine would be. Jenny knows that I am currently enrolled in a course in economics and has decided to contact me for information on the market for physicians. More specifically information on elasticity, economic profit and loss, pricing, supply and demand, and costs of production. To provide her accurate answers, I chose to educate myself on the subject matter With the information I provided, Jenny should be equipped with the resources she needs to make an informed decision on her potential career choice. ...state of the military retirement system was developed during a time when the United States had a small military and the life expediency of a retiree was around a decade after retirement. Unfortunately following the end of World War II the United States has inquired and maintained a large productive military with numbers so large that many of the service members qualify for retirement benefits. Military retirement pay is unlike civilian retirement pay systems. First of all there is no vesting in the military retirement system or no special retirement accounts, with a matching funds provision and no interest. One must either qualify for retirement by honorably serving their country for 20 years or more in the military. If a soldier is discharged from the military with 19 years, 11 months, and 27 days of service, for example, the soldier do not qualify for retirement pay but instead the soldier may be entitled to an early retirement program, these programs are designed to reduce the size of the armed forces. To say the least in many cases our soldiers are living well past the twenty years or span after their retirement from the military and there medical disability discharge. This has resulted in a massive growth in retirement pay and the cost associated with that pay. For the current service member today the personnel costs are approximately forty percent of their annual budget, retiree costs are a large part of those personnel costs. The retirement system for our service...

...[pic]Ageism: Future Planning After Retire In The Military INTRODUCTION Ageism What is ageism? Regarding to Wikipedia, Ageism, or age discrimination is stereotyping and discriminating against individuals or groups because of their age. Age discrimination refers to the actions taken to deny or limit opportunities to people on the basis of age. These are usually actions taken as a result of one’s ageist beliefs and attitudes. Ageism is a form of discrimination, which is based on someone's chronological age. Many people use this term specifically to refer to discrimination against older people, but ageism can strike people of all ages. Like other forms of discrimination, ageism can be extremely harmful, especially when it is viewed as culturally normal and acceptable. In some regions of the world, campaigns to fight ageism have been initiated in an attempt to educate people and stamp out ageism. Age discrimination occurs on both a personal and institutional level. On a personal level, an older person may be told that he or she is too old to engage in certain physical activities, like an informal game of basketball between friends and family. A younger person may be told they are too young to get a job or help move the dining room table. On an institutional level, there are policies and regulations in place that limit opportunities to people of certain ages and deny them to all others. The law, for instance, requires that all young persons must be at least 16...

...Retirement Essay It is important for our generation to start preparing for our future as early as possible. During this economic crisis it is difficult to predict our job security as well as our future finances without proper planning. Over the last couple of years we have seen the implications of what can happen to those who do not take actions to secure their finances. For those of us who are in the military we have a bit more control over our job security as opposed to those who are not. Most of us can expect to have a steady income for at least the twenty years should we choose to make the military a career. You should be saving at a minimal fifteen percent of your income each month to prepare you for your future. I recommend that you save ten percent of your gross income for your retirement and the other five percent for your long-term goals. There are many benefits to be had once you start saving such as a substantial savings for your retirement, money to purchase a home, and money for your children’s education. It is often said that the average person’s savings should have enough funds to cover at least six months of your rent or mortgage. It is important for you to start saving early so that you can provide for your family in case of unexpected emergencies, retirement, and future plans. You do not want to rely on high interest credit cards or pay day loans to get you out of a situation. These will only put you further in debt. The sooner you start saving...

...Theories providing a comprehensive and complimentary approach to careers counsellors advising clients. The three theories I have chosen are Holland’s, ‘Theory of Types’, Supers ‘Life Span Theory ‘and Krumboltz’s Social Learning Theory. These three theories when used in conjunction with each other appear to provide the most comprehensive and complimentary approach for careers counsellors when advising clients. Holland’s Theory of Types is based on the assumption that personality types are reflected in an Individuals choice of employment. Individuals have a natural inclination to gravitate towards like- minded people, who in turn reinforce their ideas and view of the world, and who see things from the same perspective. In the work environment this allows an Individual to play to his strengths and play down his weaknesses. This sense of belonging and acceptance of attitudes, values and aptitudes allows an Individual to feel comfortable, whether that is at home, socially or in the workplace. The degree of fit with the environment in which an Individual finds himself and his view of it, Holland terms congruence i.e. compatibility. Holland uses personality traits to identify an Individuals predisposition towards certain roles. Theory suggests socially adept people will naturally find it easier to work in face to face occupations where contact with the public is a necessity, while realist types who enjoy practical applications in their employment role may be happier behind...

...Econ 545 Micro Analysis Project 1 Business Economics 545 Fewer Physicians Project 1 INTRODUCTION Based in recent surveys, reports show a trending decline on the rate at which physicians move. Statistically, this may suggest the economy is preventing or affecting physicians from frequent job changes, or retirement. According to survey results, the move rate was reported as follows: 18.2% in 2008, 15% in 2009, 12.4% in 2010, and 11.3% in 2011. In as much as this reflects an obvious trend of lower move rate over the years, and may be attributed to a number of factors, it is however not enough scientific measure to ascertain the market supply and demand for physicians. PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the current position of physicians, and to establish an informed/detailed study of the trends. The research will also establish a theoretical framework of these trends, and their relatedness to the law of Demand and Supply with a focus on physicians. This review will among other things, institute recommendations. DEMAND DETERMINANTS The Law of Demand: As an initial approach, the analysis in this research paper will not be far-reaching if the concept of Demand is not critically examined. Demand has been defined in Economics as the goods and services people are willing and able to buy during a certain period of time at various prices, holding all other relevant factors constant. A simple way to explain this would be to use an everyday example of say - a café. If for instance...

...Theory I. Definition of Career Concepts • Career is a series of job posisitions that people have held during their work life. Many people look back on their careers, knowing that what they might have achieved they did achieve, and that their careers, their lives and their potential went unfulfilled. • Career management is a process that enables employees to understand and develop their career skills and interest, and to use them effectively. For the time being, career management can be briefly described as ongoing process in which an individual - Gathers relevant information about himself or herself and the world of work - Develops an accurate picture of his or her talents ,interest, values, preferred lifestyle as well as alternative occupations ,jobs, and organizations - Develop realistic career goals based on this information - Develops and implements a strategy designed to achieve the goals - Obtains feedback on the effectiveness of the strategy and the relevance of the goals Moreover, individuals will need to develop a set of career competencies that enable them to develop insight into themselves and their environment so they can navigate their increasingly unpredictable and “chaotic” careers. The specific steps in the career management process and the qualities necessary to carry them out. • Career planning is the deliberate...

A further 160,000 employees or 35% of staff have served an apprenticeship or completed vocational training, while just under a third of employees (142,500 people) have an unrelated qualification or no vocational training. Careers often last within the company until retirement. The age profile of Siemens AG reveals a high proportion of people in the middle age group, with relatively few employees aged over 55 years; nevertheless, there are some employees who are older than 60 years of age. The average retirement age is between 57 and 60 years of age and, to date, many staff members continue to make use of the partial retirement option. Siemens has a works council that is actively involved in personnel development processes. The original initiative In the mid 1990s, staff members...
