Big Red is a book written by Jim Kjelgaard about Ross and Danny Pickett who are both trappers. Danny has a dog named Red, and together they face the challenges of life in the wilderness. This story takes place in the 1980’s to the 1990’s in the forests of Wintapi near New York. Here they face dangers from the environment and wild animals.
Big Red has a complex plot that unfolds as the reader continues to read the book. The inciting incident occurs when Old Majesty, a dangerous bear, kills one of Mr. Haggin’s bulls, and Red bays Old Majesty to a standoff. Old Majesty also kills the three hounds and mule that Ross and Danny Pickett own. In the struggle that follows, Ross breaks three ribs and an arm fighting Old Majesty. The overarching conflict in the book is that Old Majesty is terrorizing the forests of Wintapi, leading to the climax when Danny Pickett and Red fight him. This conflict is resolved when Danny shoots Old Majesty in the head killing him. On the other hand if Old Majesty were a person, he would prove to be the worst Challenger student because he is selfish, mean, inconsiderate and uses his strength to harm
