The following critical review will be evaluating the article Patterns and Perceptions of Intimate Partner Violence Committed by Returning Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder” by Erin P. Finley in the Journal of Family Violence. The following will include a summary of the article and identify the articles purpose. Following a review of three case studies the articles authority, accuracy, currency, relevance, objectivity and stability will also be examined. Patterns and Perceptions of Intimate Partner Violence Committed by Returning Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder identify a subject that is becoming more relevant in society. According to the article in the Journal of Family Violence (2010) 25:737-743, intimate partner violence is more prevalent among returning Veterans than in the general population addressing the patterns and perceptions. Over all this article was well written, organized and identified the important issues however, it was limited by its small sample size. The author’s comprehension of the family’s home lives, partner violence and mental health is lean. The limited study shares two occurrences. Minor evidence of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) may involve patterns and relate to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms and the occurrences shared relate to the combat members time of active duty. Therefore, it leads to mixed interpretations and clinical knowledge.
Article Summary
The purpose of this article is to examine PTSD in returning Veterans and the occurrence of IPV as well as the negative impact it has on spouses and family. After reviewing three case studies two main conclusions were identified. The first identified conclusion suggests that, family members and Veteran’s express three patterns of partner violence; (1) violence committed in anger, (2) dissociative violence and (3) parasomniac/hypnopompic violence. All three patterns of suggest distinct possible links between IPV and PTSD symptoms. The second conclusion identified proposes that those involved share common opinions regarding PTSD and war-related torture. According to the issues of the topic it affects the stability and safety of the family as a whole. There is a known problem with IPV amongst Veterans returning from deployment.
Article Structure The article was introduced with an abstract using “a recent mixed-methods study conducted among Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It created questions regarding the occurrence of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in this population” (Finley, p.737, October 18, 2013) an overview of the article by sharing three case studies with two main conclusions found in each. This seven page article is classified as a qualitative research article. The article was accessed online through the University of New Brunswick’s library as a PDF document. As such, links are not included in the article, however contact details for the author are provided. Although the pages and sentence structure appear appropriate the sample size of the study is not large enough to provide enough information to prove its hypothesis. The article provided various references to support its research and its information were found to be easy to read and comprehend. Numerous references were in the bibliography.
Article Critique
Authority
The Journals, of The American Medical Association, The American Journal of Psychiatry, and The New England Journal of Medicine in which the article makes reference to are extremely reputable sources. The results from the original article are aiming for future research and clinical treatment of those returning with a diagnosis of PTSD. In addition the fact that the article was found via EBSCO host’s Academic Search Premier, a reliable database simply adds to its credibility, as does that fact that it is peer reviewed. The author of this article is involved at the University of Texas Health and Science Center in Epidemiology and Biostatistics along with Medicine, Geriatrics and Gerontology which also supports the articles credibility. With all these factors combined it is clear that his article provides creditable information and is a credible resource.
Accuracy
The main source of information for this article was a “result of work supported with the resources and use of the facilities at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. The views expressed in this article are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the position or policy of the Department of Veterans Affairs or the United States government” (Finley, p.737, October 18, 2013). The fact that the article was peer reviewed also verifies the articles precision.
Currency
The journal issue containing the article was published online on August 13, 2010 and became United States Government copyright in 2010. The recent publication of the article and the recent references indicate that the article is current, as does the content of the article which deals with returning Veterans with PTSD. Relevance The article was published in the Journal of Family Violence for an educated sector to address this ongoing issue. The main topic of the article investigates patterns and perceptions of IPV and is significant to today`s society. The article covers several aspects of the issue. For example: partner violence, patterns of the abuse, and the trauma experienced. The information originates in the United States of America but relates to all countries who have returned from combat service. Objectivity The information in the article was derived from Southern Texas Veterans Health Care System. The article discusses three case studies: violence committed in anger; dissociative violence; and parasomniac/hypnopompic violence. Although the article shows research data, and contains opinions it could benefit from more statistical data evidence. It was limited in sample size, number of samples and required more research. The article does serve its purpose as it brings to the attention of an educated population that IPV occurs by Veterans returning with PTSD. Stability Having been published in The Journal of Family Violence, it would appear the article is a stable resource.
Conclusion
This review summarized and critically reviewed Finley’s article, “Patterns and Perceptions of Intimate Partner Violence Committed by Returning Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder”. The content, structure, strengths and limitations of the article were analysed and critiqued. The article has several limitations linked with this study, the greatest issue being “its small sample size and lack of a systematic strategy for investigating the occurrence of IPV among study participants” (Finley, p.741, October 18, 2013). However, it is believed that the occurrences of frequent outburst of violent behavior require further research and study in Veterans returning from combat operations. Comprehensive research and complete studies may assist families with coping strategies in an unstable relationship. Finally, additional research will improve and assist families living with a returning service member with PTSD and violent IPV tendencies.
