Results indicate that there are significant positive values deriving from the proposed project. Respondents report a mean willingness to pay a premium in their bi-monthly electric bills of h8.86 for the sole purpose of the construction of the wind farm. The estimated economic benefits to the local population are weighed against the investment cost in a cost–benefit analysis to inform policy making and implications for EU energy policy are provided. & 2009 Elsevier Ltd. ...Mexico. According to Do Something, an environmental website, have reported the death and injury of 28, more than 8,000 animals dead within six months, and 16,000 miles of coastline pollution (11 facts about BP oil spill). The BP oil spill has since became one of the worst ecological disaster in America's history. People living near the coast line has been affected due to polluted air and water. Many children had been sick and they had problem breathing fresh air. There were several issues with this oil spill: professional issues, ethics and new technology issues, legal, regulatory and political, safety issues, and environmental issues. If BP would have taken care of all these issues there had been no oil spill. The oil spill is the result of a series of events that eventually led to tens of thousands of barrels of petroleum to be leaked into the gulf. In September, BP released a report that analyzed the events leading up to the incident. The report shows that the fire was caused by a release of hydrocarbons from the well, and them onto the oil rig (BP internal investgation team) The Deepwater horizon was equipped with fail-safe mechanisms in case anything were to go wrong. The issue is that they failed as well. Once the rig sank, it caused three breaks in the pipes. That is when the spill began. “There were multiple chances to stop this. And they all failed,” says Malcom Spaulding, a professor of ocean engineering at the University of Rhode Island (Time). The American state of Louisiana...

...Review Igor Ansoff was born in Russia in 1918 and his family emigrated to the United States of America in 1936. His early academic focus was on mathematics, and he obtained a PhD in applied mathematics from Brown University, Rhode Island. He joined the Rand Corporation in 1950, and moved on to Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, where he eventually became Vice-President, Plans and Programmers, and then Vice-President and General Manager of the Industrial Technology Division (Igor Ansoff, 2012). In 1963, Ansoff was appointed Professor of Industrial Administration at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. He went on to hold a number of positions in universities in both the United States and Europe. He continued to act as a consultant after retiring from academia in 2000 and, on his retirement, was named Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the United States International University (Igor Ansoff, 2012). Until the publication of Corporate Strategy, companies had little guidance on how to plan for, or make decisions about, the future. Traditional methods of planning were based on an extended budgeting system which used the annual budget, projecting it a few years into the future. By its nature, this system paid little or no attention to strategic issues. With the beginning of greater competition, higher interest in acquisitions, mergers and diversification, and greater turbulence in the business...

...James Shanks EN1420 Final Paper The Hidden Costs of Green Energy In this day of steadily rising energy costs, increasing difficulty in finding readily accessible supplies of non-renewable resources, aging power production and transport facilities and environmental awareness individuals, local government and private utilities are turning towards renewable energy resources at an increasing rate. Many of these entities tout the benefit of their decisions as “green” and “environmentally friendly”. The real cost of these projects is often ignored completely either through true ignorance of the facts or in an attempt to be duplicitous about the damage that is really being done. In 2013 4,751 MW of new photovoltaic (PV) capacity was installed representing a 41 percent increase in deployment over installation levels in 2012 (Solar Industry Data, 2014). While this might mean a reduction in non-renewable resources (referred to as NRR’s going forward) burned, it also represents a drastic increase in the use and production of numerous toxic chemicals that result from the PV manufacturing process. According to Dustin Mulvaney, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at San Jose State University, the production of PV panels begins with the creation of Silicon wafers, a process that uses and/or produces sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide both of which are known as caustic chemicals that can be dangerous to the eyes, lungs and skin. As the production process continues...

...Many individuals, both young and old, are currently suffering from Diabetes. Diabetes is described as a condition in which the body does not properly process food for energy (Center for Disease Control). It is explained that, “The pancreas makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugars to build up in your blood” (Center for Disease Control). This is a serious issue, given that glucose is vital to our health because it is used for energy. People suffering from diabetes have too much glucose in their blood, which leads to serious, detrimental health issues. There are three...

...that tend to beneficiate from free trade and whose jobs are less likely to ever go overseas also feel that free trade agreements are hurting the US. When compared to 10 years ago when this survey was first done there has been a wide increase in the educated people that have changed their mind about free trade. This gap doubled from 24% to 50%. Politicians have now taken the issue into their own hands. Last week the senate passed a bill that would pressure China to float its currency in an effort to level the amount of imports that enter the country. While this may be a temporary issue that politicians use for their advantage in the next elections it is still an issue that more and more Americans are paying attention to as the unemployment rate still lingers near 10%. The article also mentions how China is beginning to replace Wall Street as the new “America’s villain.” Some think this happened because China pulled out of the recession a lot faster than any other country, and while the US still struggles to keep a healthy economy, China’s GDP is ranging in the teens. While many agree with this issue, there are still many scholars and politicians that feel that we need free trade. There are some that argue that we are slipping back into an era that did not have free trade and many...

...networking. The project did face some challenges, however. The first of the challenges was cited in the book, The Psychology of Exercise: Integrating Theory and Practice and the challenge was that the page may have been unclear in certain activities and how to implement them in a normally sedentary lifestyle (Lox et al., 2010 p. 144). Another challenge, also cited in The Psychology of Exercise: Integrating Theory and Practice, was that those who liked the page may not have actively followed the posts and done the activities and, rather than implementing an active lifestyle, they scrolled past the posts in their newsfeed as they would all other posts (Lox et al., 2010 p. 144). Other challenges faced throughout the course of the project were the issue of the page potentially not offering activities which were consistent with the levels of physical fitness those who liked the page may or may not have been at along with promoting the page to friends and others on Facebook. Not having face-to-face contact with the community made it difficult to advertise the page and emphasize the importance of the message the page was delivering. This lack of personal contact also made it difficult to choose the types of activities to post because there was no way of evaluating the physical fitness levels of those who were following the activities or hear their suggestions, comments, concerns, or questions in the most personal and private manner. Though the page had a messaging feature for contact, it felt...

...Vulnerable Populations-Part 1 Jane Doe University of Phoenix Nursing 531 June 25, 2012 Georgetta Baptist A vulnerable population is defined as “those at risk for poor physical, psychological, or social health” (de Chesney, 2012). There are many vulnerable populations and this paper will concentrate on the elderly. According to Walsh (2009), the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), states the elderly are considered anyone 65 years old or older. With the increased lifespan of elderly, there have become new demographics of young old (65-74), old (75-84), and oldest old (85 & over), and the frail old (anyone over 65 with physical or cognitive disabilities). The US census bureau estimated in 2011, the population of elderly persons 65 and over living in the U.S. to be 311,501,917. Between 2000 and 2010, the population 65 and over grew at a faster rate than any other population in the United States, 15.1% compared to 9.7% of the rest of the US population. Thirteen percent of the population is elderly; 55.2% are married, 32% live with family members, 51.7% are female, 48.3% are male, 60% are white, 17% are black, 18% are Hispanic, and 5% are other races. Education wise, 10.9% have less than a 9th grade , 10.3% have attended between 9th and 12th grade but did not receive a diploma, 36.4% are high school graduates, 20.6% have some college, and 22.5% have Bachelor’s degree or greater. It is estimated that elderly between the ages of 65-84 are doubling as the baby...

...Final Global Business Plan Paper Chris Fischbach, O.H. Hudson Jr, William Del Valle MGT/448 Global Business Strategies February 15, 2012 John O'Brien, MBA Final Global Business Plan Paper * In the previous weeks, Team D set out to gain a better understanding of globalization and determine if opportunities exist for branching out their fictional company DeltaCompCarib (DCC) into a new global market. During this time the team developed a business strategy to promote DCC and bring its product line to Puerto Rico. Early on DCC had to conduct a regional analysis, country analysis, and an organization and product or service analysis. Regional Analysis Regional Alliances and Economic Integration Puerto Rico is just one of many Caribbean countries, which make up the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM). This regional integration between Caribbean countries, formed in 1973. According to the United States Trade International Commission (2008), “The purpose of regional integration is to achieve economic gains through free trade flow and investments between neighboring countries often by lowering or eliminating tariffs against imports from fellow member countries. These actions increase duty free trade, tourism, movement of labor, and the flow of capital across national borders, reducing the possibility of conflict. Regional integration promotes global business in that it removes, in stages or altogether...
