The second amendment states “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Our Founding Fathers believed that governments are prone to use soldiers to oppress the people. History had suggested that this risk could be controlled by permitting the government to raise armies (consisting of full-time paid troops) only when needed to fight foreign enemies. “We established however some, although not all its (self-government) important principles. The constitutions of most of our states assert, that all power is inherent in the people; that they exercise it by themselves, in all cases to which they think themselves competent; (as in electing their functionaries executive and legislative, and deciding by a jury of themselves, in all judiciary cases in which any fact is involved,) or may they act by representatives, freely and equally chosen that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed” (Jefferson).
Gun control has been a highly controversial issue for decades. A vast majority of Americans believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would quickly reduce the threat of crime. Many innocent people feel they have the right to bear arms for protection, or even just the pleasure of recreational sports, such as hunting. Americans have a constitutional right to own hand guns. Although, stricter laws and licensing may not affectively abolish crime, it will help to make it more challenging for anyone to purchase fire arms.
Currently the federal law states the following: The use of any firearm in a violent or drug trafficking crime is punishable by law. A person who wishes to purchase a firearm must be 18 years of age to purchase a rifle or shot gun and a person must be 21 years of age to purchase a hand gun. The Right to Bear Arms

...The Right to Bear Arms Katie Bruner BCOM275 January 4, 2011 Christine Taylor Doctor's Asking About Guns in the Home Recently the discussion on the radio was about pediatricians asking parents about firearms in the household. I found an article with basic pros and cons to this subject. Law are put into place to keep the public safe, but sometimes those law start to step on the toes of Americans’ rights. Is it really necessary for my pediatrician to ask me about my gun collection or if I even have one? The Second Amendment is a powerful one, but people are making it difficult for any ordinary citizen to enjoy this right. According to (Constitution.org, 10/1), the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights says, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (Constitution.org, 11/2) says “The militia, when properly formed, is in fact the people themselves….all men capable of bearing arms.” The Second Amendment was ultimately formed so that the government cannot become too strong and overpower the people. This means anyone in America has the right to bear arms. Now I understand the need to put some regulation on this right for obvious reasons. But what I do not understand is what having a gun has to do with my children’s well baby check-ups. When reading this article Kids and Guns: Why Doctors Have a Right to Know, it say how a pediatrician told the mother...

Right To Bear Arms Limitations

...solution of this repeated problem is to add limitations on the right to bear arms or the means to keep a weapon. President Barack Obama recently stated that, “We know that states with the most gun laws tend to have the fewest gun deaths. So the notion that gun laws don’t work, or just will make it harder for law-abiding citizens and criminals to still get their guns is not borne out by the evidence.” This thus shows that there are issues disregarding whether fire arm restrictions have an impact on American citizens. As a result...

Right To Bear Arms

...The Right to Bear Arms One of the main controversies in America today is if people should have the right to bear arms. The true question being-do guns kill mores lives than they save? Even though some argue that people should have the right to bear arms, guns should not be sold or owned by citizens because guns account for a high number of crimes and the national guard is in place to protect the states and the people. The right to bear arms is placed in the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The amendment states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (“Right to Bear Arms”) A lot of people argue that the Second Amendment gives the people individual rights to own guns, and the government should not restrict this right. Many believe the people should have the right to protect themselves and their family by having a gun in their home in case of emergencies....

Right To Bear Arms

...The Balance Between the Government and the Right to Bear Arms With the increasingly growing differences in views among American citizens, the U.S. government can no longer afford to continue to remain neutral with regards to gun control. The ideal relationship between the second amendment, the right to bear arms, and the government is a balance that includes taxation to stimulate and benefit the economy; enforced, mandatory background checks; and the requirement to register firearms. In order to sustain the economy, the U.S. government needs to tax firearm ammunition. Similar to the sin taxes placed on cigarettes and alcohol, a tax on bullets would require consumers to pay a couple extra cents per bullet, thus making it more expensive to own and operate those types of weapons. Although a tax on bullets and ammunition would likely make current and future gun owners unhappy, it would not infringe upon their right to own a gun....

Right To Bear Arms

...the United States must bear arms. The right was so important that it is in the United States Constitution. The second amendment gives citizens of the US the right to bear arms. Times have changed, and the interpretation of the constitution has changed also. Numerous organizations wholeheartedly still support the right to bear arms. However, many believe that in recent times the right to bear arms should be more stringent and selective. The media has shown the US public countless examples of how guns have been used to massacre citizens by the masses wantonly. Every American should not be allowed to carry a gun; there are individuals who do not merit the right to bear a weapon. The Mentally ill should not be permitted to carry guns. Mental illness has been proven to immensely affect cognitive function, which affects decision-making, empathy, self-restraint, self-awareness, and critical thinking. Right to Bear Arms

...Right to Bear Arms and The Second Amendment October 20, 2010 Should only the criminals be allowed to own guns that they buy from the Black-market? Ask yourself this question next time you vote. A coalition of gun control groups and some politicians are trying to get the Second Amendment changed so that millions of Americans can’t and won’t be able to own guns legally in the United States. The Second Amendment reads: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. The number of well-publicized public shootings during the past few years, especially the tragedy at Columbine High School, has re-energized the gun control movement. As a show of strength coalition of gun control groups have organized many protests. These types of events are designed to stir up emotions rather than promote rational thought. And when one looks at the facts about gun control, it's easy to see why the anti-gun lobby relies on emotion rather than logic to make its case. Some of their facts are: Thousands of children die annually in gun accidents. Actually the truth is that gun accidents involving children are actually at record lows, although you wouldn't know it from listening to the mainstream media. In 2008, the last year for which data are available, only 142 children under 15 years of age died in gun accidents, and the total number of gun-related deaths for this age group was 642. More children...

The Right to Keep and Bear Arms

...The Right to Keep and Bear Arms: A Right to Self-Defense Against Criminals and Despots by Robert Dowlut[*] If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. -- James Madison[1] INTRODUCTION A written constitution is a reminder that governments can be unreasonable and unjust. By guaranteeing that "[a] well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed," the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution provides the citizens a means of protection against the unjust excesses of government.[2] The Framers placed this guarantee in the Bill of Rights because they considered the right to keep and bear arms peculiarly important and also uniquely vulnerable to infringement. The Amendment's command protects individuals against even popular conceptions of the public good. In addition to this protection within the United States Constitution,[3] the constitutions of forty-three states guarantee the right to keep and bear arms.[4] Despite the constitutional authority for this right, legislators and judges have consistently attempted to devalue it. Methods such as giving misleading labels to select firearms like "assault weapons"[5] or "Saturday Night Specials"[6] have been used to justify incremental disarmament.[7] American jurisprudence has deliberately devalued the right...

Is the Right to Bear Arms Ethical

...Senior Research Project: Is the right to bear arms ethical? Lucas Van Duyn Senior Seminar: Business Ethics Dr. Jewe July 31, 2012 Introduction to the Project: In the United States, research into firearms and violent crime is fraught with difficulties, associated with limited data on gun ownership and use, firearms markets, and aggregation of crime data. Research studies into gun violence have primarily taken one of two approaches: case-control studies and social ecology. Gun ownership is usually determined through surveys, proxy variables, and sometimes with production and import figures. In statistical analysis of homicides and other types of crime, which are rare events, these data tend to have poison distributions, which also presents methodological challenges to researchers. (Just Facts, 2010) Americans own an estimated 270 million firearms, approximately 90 guns for every 100 people. In 2009, guns took the lives of 31,347 Americans in homicides, suicides and unintentional shootings. This is the equivalent of more than 85 deaths each day and more than three deaths each hour. 66,769 Americans were treated in hospital emergency departments for non-fatal gunshot wounds in 2009. Firearms were the third-leading cause of injury-related deaths nationwide in 2009, following poisoning and motor vehicle accidents. Between 1955 and 1975, the Vietnam War killed over 58,000 American soldiers – less than the number of civilians killed with guns in the U.S. in an average...

Right To Bear Arms Essay

...is a Good Guy with a gun." - Wayne Lapierre. Our founding fathers would agree with this statement; as firearms were a tool that brought about the birth of the United States from the grip of tyranny. Which is why they chose to include the right to bear arms in the Bill of Rights. Since then however, many people that call themselves Americans wish to dispose of this Right. The right that gives Americans the power to defend themselves, their family or friends, their property, and most importantly their civil rights. Whoever apposes this view, has the ultimate warped view of reality, due to the arguments they make, and the statistics that do not back them up. This is why everyone should appose gun...

Essay On The Right To Bear Arms

...For many years the legality of guns in the United States of America has been questioned and debated on. It has been covered by news organisations all over the world and there have been multiple campaigns which are unequivocally against the infamous second amendment, which states that it is "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms" Many people in the U.S. believe it is their divine right to possess these killing machines despite the fact they are responsible for thousands of deaths each year and all they do is bring pain and suffering. The second amendment was adopted in 1791, 225 years ago. We live in the 21st century and it is becoming apparent after almost 50 school shootings this year alone that old laws must be revisited. There is a common argument among people in favour of the second amendment “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” which is true. However, the United States had 9,146 homicides by gun in 2012 compared to their neighbouring country Canada’s 173. This just goes to show how prevalent this problem actually is and that although people kill people, guns play a major factor in this too and will always cause problems as almost anyone can acquire them. In the U.S. obtaining a gun is...

Right To Bear Arms Essay

...Through the Bill of Rights, the United States added the basic rights of their people to the Constitution. It is build out of ten different amendments, including rights like the freedom of speech and privacy. The Bill of Rights also contains one of the most debated Amendments, the second one which prevents the right to bear arms and allows the states to have an organized Militia. This Amendment was made in a time of war, revolution and the States were young and not yet successfully central organized, but nowadays there is not the fear that somebody invades your state. Further, it received a lot of criticism in the last years, because of numerous gun incidents including small children and gun shootings in High Schools and Colleges. These facts make me think about whether it is necessary to have this right or at least if it has to be so loose. Loose referring to which...

Essay On Right To Bear Arms

...The second amendment, from the U.S. constitution, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”, one of the most current argued topics in 2018. What the second amendment does is allow us to carry our firearms without question, but people are starting to question it. So many Americans feel their rights are being invaded when someone doesn’t allow them to carry their firearm. Although many Americans demand their right to bear arms, people who have mental health issues, a history of violence, or are underage should not be able to purchase guns. First, people with mental issues should not have guns. For example, the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, the shooter, Adam Lanza, was diagnosed after the shooting with schizophrenia. He took a gun, shot his mother, and then started a school shooting. No one knew from our knowledge if anyone had known about his schizophrenia before the shooting. But something in his head clicked and it was too late to save him. He had a mental illness yet he was still able to get his hands on a gun and killed 20 kids between six and seven years of age, his mother, and six staff members. People with mental issues should have no way of getting access to a gun....

The right to bear arms is given to everyone as a US citizen. First, Guns provide protection from any unwanted violent situation in this world. She looks in the mirror and saw the damage he has done to her and swore, this is the last time he lays his hand on her or the kids.
