Gun Violence In The Media

...Gun violence over the past few years has risen to become a major role in the many issues of the United States. There has been a lot of focus on how to regulate the use of guns and how to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and people who may have some type of mental problem. What a lot of people don’t pay attention to though is the impact that gun violence has on the victims and those affected by the misuse of weapons. Many people are killed in incidents that contain gun violence like the school shootings and killings of children at places like Sandy Hook, and even more public places like the Aurora Movie Theater where lives are taken from innocent people. Gun Control

...Topic: Gun Control Purpose: Stricter Laws on Gun control Specific purpose: Gun Control Controversy Thesis: Most gun owners are responsible and law-abiding, and they use their guns safely. The President strongly believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. But to better protect our children and our communities from tragic mass shootings like those in Newtown, Aurora, Oak Creek, and Tucson, there are four common-sense steps we can take right now based of the President’s Plan for Gun control. Introduction: I. While no law or set of laws will end gun violence, it is clear that the American people want action. If even one child’s life can be saved, then we need to act. Now is the time to do the right thing for our children, our communities, and the country we love. II. Congress must also do its part. To prevent mass shootings and other gun violence, Congress should take critical steps through new legislation, including: requiring Background checks for all gun sales; reinstating the prohibition on high-capacity Magazines; renewing and strengthening the ban on assault weapons; and creating Serious penalties for gun traffickers who help put guns into the hands of criminals. III. These actions will: help make sure information about potentially dangerous people who are barred from having guns is available to the national background check system; lift the ban on research into the causes...

Argumentative Essay: The Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act

...Gun violence is not a new issue, nor is gun control a new argument. The “war on guns” dates all the way back to the infancy of the United States of America; the right to bear arms was guaranteed in the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, and has been seen, in the more than two centuries since, as a cornerstone of American liberty. However, in the last few years, repeated mass killings have placed the gun control debate at the eye of the American political storm. In an effort to balance beliefs from both ends of the political spectrum - that gun ownership needs to be protected, while restricted enough to keep guns out of the hands of those who may do deadly harm with them - has come a lack of serious, effective legislation on the matter. The Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act - seen at its enactment as a milestone in the gun control movement - has proven itself ineffective at preventing the type of mass shooting that is, unfortunately, all too common today. These killings, and the high rates of gun violence overall, challenge the core values of social work practice, and the short- and long-term economic impact of this violence is, at best, counter-productive. Based on the research outlined in this document, it is necessary as social workers to create a culture of safety, and as a country to enact sensible gun...

...problem oriented policing program in Stockton, CA and the Gang Reduction Program (GRP) found in Richmond, VA. Both of these programs aim to reduce youth gang violence and gang crime. Operation Peace keeper also aims to reduce gang involvement, along with gang violence by conveying to young gang members, or those at risk of becoming gang members the severe and dire consequences of gang violence. Operation Peacekeeper has reduced very positive results gun homicides decreased by 35% between 1997-2002. Key Social Issues

...are sex offenders, drug abuse, and gun control. The first key social issue is sex offenders. Sex offenders are required by state law to register in the system and allows the public to know where they live and what offense was made (Perlam 2006.). A sex offender is an adult, or child having consensual or nonconsensual sex with a minor. Having a sex offender in your neighborhood can prove not to be a good thing for schools or homes because of the children. When individuals register as they are supposed to, it allows people in the community to be aware of them. The second key social issue is drug abuse. This issue requires a need for criminal justice practitioner in for different reasons. Drug abuse is a social and physical problem. The physical problem is the pain that a person inflicts upon themselves intentionally and unintentionally while high. Drug abuse can lead to life threatening addictions and can also kill a person. Therefore, it contributes for a need of a criminal justice practitioner; the CJ practitioner can promote a lack of narcotics to prevent individuals from spending the rest of their lives jail. When a person abuses drugs, they do not see their problem as an issue. A criminal justice practitioner role would be to help drug abusers by, sending them to rehabilitation centers or locking them up. Drug abusers can become violent and also influence others to try/use drugs in the community. The third and final key social issue is gun control. In the Constitution, the...

Our point of study is Kohistan community located in the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan .we are going to study factors that facilitated crime in this area and how the crimes are associated with their cultures from the past. Kohistans interpret violence differently due to different cultural background from the rest of the world. I categorized the factors leading to violence in Kohistan into three. These factors include political, ecological and religious. Thull community is involves around 6000 Muslims and is located in the Hindu-Kush Mountains. The community is located 40 kilometers along the river valley. The road leading to the community is very poor. As epidemiologist and leader of Cure Violence, Gary Slutkin, sees it, violence is just as much a disease as HIV, Bubonic Plague, Leprosy, and most recently Ebola Virus due to the way it spreads, clusters and is cured (James 2011). Therefore, violence should be treated in the same way as contagious disease. Dr. Gary Slutkin graduated from University of Chicago with a medical degree in 1975. Following his training, he left the United States to live in a camp in Somalia with over one million refugees. As he mentioned in his Ted Talk, his responsibility was to inhibit infectious diseases that plagued the people such as tuberculosis and cholera (Slutkin...

As school violence has increased so have the legislative and regulatory policymaking mandates c a l l i n g for increased disciplinary consequences for inappropriate stud ent behavior. Ethical problem-solving and decision-making have taken a back seat to reactive discipline by school officials. Media publicity has forced proactive principals to become reactive impulsive decision-makers. In this article, Starratt’s three-part model for ethical school administration – encompassing the ethics of critique, justice, and care – is applied to a fictional scenario and the ethical dilemma that evolves. Recommendations for practice are offered in a proposed resolution of the dilemma within the context of a central conclusion: if the school administrator of the twenty- first century is to...

School Shootings

...may also refer to shootings near or on a school bus or near a school when it is in session. School shootings could occur anywhere in the world where firearms are available for access. These types of shootings in particular have generated a political dispute on stricter gun control. There are well known shootings in the United States, Europe, Canada, and other countries. The United States has the highest number of school related shootings. This paper will examine a few of those incidents and compare how the media and academic articles portray them. Overall, media articles show that coverage of school shooting events such as the ones that occurred at Virginia Tech University and Sandy Hook Elementary School tend to primarily focus on the number of victims, reactions of family, the misfortune of the event, as well as the mental state and background of the shootings. For an example, in the Los Angeles Times article “Gunman kills 20 kids, 6 adults at Connecticut elementary school”, they focus on the number of dead, imagery, and the emotion after the shooting such as parent’s reactions and children’s reactions. In the article they seem to dramatize the whole situation by saying things like “Evil visited this community today”. Although it is a tragic event the media seems to focus more on the issue of numbers and emotion. I think that the media might focus on the numbers to catch the reader’s attention. The media does not attempt to look into the reasoning why this person did the things...
