When I received an information sheet from Mary Baldwin about the program, I was very intrigued. I’m a huge fan of Gilmore Girls, but specifically Rory Gilmore. She’s my age when the show begins and she’s very brilliant in many ways, but most importantly she makes excellent grades and ends up attending a private school called Chilton that only accepts students with outstanding academic achievements. I’ve always felt a connection with this character for many reasons, but I always felt that I wasn’t smart enough to go to college, let alone, a school like that until I was proved wrong.
Where I’m from, a small town with sparse job opportunities, most people either end up working in fast food or at the grocery store, or having to drive 30 minutes to an hour in order to get to a job that pays well. Most of the students at my high school believe that they’re destined for the same fate, mostly the latter, and no one ever really gets out of here. I ,personally, don’t desire to walk down that beaten path of being financially unstable and unhappy. There’s no way to happy in a place full of drug use and nothing to do for moral fun. I recently decided that I would like to go into that field also because I love the way I explain things. My good friend, Faith, always asks me questions about religion knowing that I am a religious person and she is not, and she says that she actually understands it when I explain it versus how the people she grew up around explained it. She has even become more interested in religion as a result. We all know what it’s like to read something from a news article and get really scared because we don’t know what it’s saying exactly. I intend on executing that confusion. I also love journalism because I really like reading and watching the news. I like to stay updated and I think it would be really cool to be the brain behind the words that Hoda Kotb is reading off of her sheet for the morning
