The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 and the Rosewood Massacre of 1923 were two of the most violent and racially motivated attacks on the black community in the history of the United States. The Tulsa Race Massacre took place between May 31st and June 1st of 1921, in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma. A prosperous Black community commonly referred to as Black Wall Street. The violence began after Dick Rowland, a young Black man, was falsely accused of assaulting a white woman. When a group of armed Black men went to protect Rowland from lynching, clashes with a white mob erupted.
