For my exploration, the poets I choose are Sappho, Bertran De Born, Wang Wei and Kabir. Writing in different period, the poems coming from that poets treat different subjects like love, war, retirement and religion. However, despite the difference on the subjects, they all describe the feelings of the authors. How they perceive things and what would make them be happy.
Sappho in her poems presents us different feelings associate with love. For her, love can be source of jealousy, pain, doubt and happiness. He likes to see men and horses prepared for war. He is happy when men affront each other and especially when the warriors scream to express succeed or defeat: “I will tell you there is not so much savor in eating or drinking or sleeping, as when I hear them scream, “there they are! After reading the poems of Wang Wei, we can see his desire to take his retreat. He would love to return to a calm area where he can admire the nature and leave in peace. He cares only for tranquility and nothing else would affect his heart (p.1020). Indeed, after he received his friend Pei Di when he was confined, he expresses his desire to abandon everything and rest: “you say you did not achieve your wishes and return to rest at the foot of Southern Mountain. But go- do not ask again: white clouds have not ending time”. (p.1022)
The poems of Kabir invite the reader to focus on what it is important concerning the faith. He wants them to realize the vanity of the life. It is not necessary to be pride. In the contrary they should be humble because death can occur at any time (p.104). therefore, they should focus on what it is important for their salvation, their relationship with God rather than religious organization. In fact, he sees religious Muslim and Hinduism like finance organization:” they do their rounds from door to door, selling their magical formulas—they’re vain about their reputation.”
