Introduction
Case Study A: Tech writer, Maddy Sarayanan, had recently abandoned her higher paying freelance work for a contract at a well known software development company. The company boasts about its work environment, and is not only emphasized to be a great place to work, but also a place where “every product takes a team effort, and the quality of every product depends on everyone speaking up” (p. 4). Because Sarayanan’s supervisor was typically in his office working on developing his career, Sarayanan instead worked closely with the project team to help the team meet deadlines. Sarayanan had been asked by a member of the marketing department to work on a “New Features” page for an upcoming product. In the draft of the “New Features” page sent to Sarayanan, there was a feature (software which will automatically register vehicles online) that Sarayanan is aware will not be available for an additional six months. Sarayanan knows that including this feature on the page will result in damage to the company's reputation, as well as cause users fines. When Sarayanan points out the mistake to her coworker from the marketing department and does not include the feature on the page, her coworker emails both her and the unit manager: “This is not right. Put the vehicle registration in as a new feature.…show more content… First, in the case study it mentions that Sarayanan’s supervisor was not actively involved in Sarayanan’s work. Despite this, I still assumed that he was still her supervisor and he would still be available to listen and give input on the situation. I also assumed that in person communication was available, and that Sarayanan could talk directly with the marketing department, the technical department, and her supervisor. I also assumed that because Sarayanan was only on a contract with this company, that she may not have as much control over the situation as other full-time permanent
