Appendix B

Part I

Define the following terms:

Term | Definition | Stereotypes | A 'stereotype' is a belief that can be held by anybody[1] about specific types of individuals or certain ways of doing things, but that belief may or may not accurately reflect reality. | Prejudice | The word prejudice is most often used to refer to preconceived judgments toward people or a person because of gender, social class, age, disability, religion, sexuality, race/ethnicity, nationality or other personal characteristics | Labeling theory | Labeling theory focuses on the tendency of majorities to negatively label minorities or those seen as deviant from standard cultural norms |

Part II

Select three of the identity categories below and name or describe at least 3 related stereotypes for each:

* Race * Ethnicity * Religion * Gender * Sexual orientation * Age * Disability

Category | Stereotype 1 | Stereotype 2 | Stereotype 3 | Disability | One of the general stereotypes that a disabled person may face, is being used as a comic relief or point of humor because of their disability | Another stereotype is the belief that a disable person(s) may be Incapable of everyday life, not being able to participate in everyday activities, or even socialize. | Last but not least, many disabled people are outcast because of how they may look or even based on their disability and they may even be labeled as a “Freak”. | Gender | One of the most common stereotypes, is the fact that because women typically have less muscle mass than men, women are not capable of completing the same tasks men can accomplish. | Another stereotype is that women are supposed to do nothing but house work and cooking. As you know there was a point in time where women were not even allowed to have a job because of this exact stereotype. | Finally, the third typical stereotype is that well groomed and tender hearted men are typically labeled as “homosexuals” simply based on the typical view that men are supposed to be consistently ruthless, or inconsiderate towards others. | Ethnicity | A major stereotype regarding Ethnicity is that anyone of another ethnicity is looked down upon as inferior or just not good enough based on skin color. | Another stereotype based on ethnicity, is the fact that most American’s believe that people form the Middle East hate America and want nothing but destruction and pain for our country. | Another good example of an ethnic stereotype is the, fact that most people also believe all American’s are racist. It is also believed that all Americans believe themselves to be greater than everyone else or superior in every way. |

Part III

Answer each question in 100 to 150 words related to those stereotypes:

* What are the positive aspects of the stereotypes, if any?

Most aspects of stereotyping are not positive in any way; in fact most stereotypes are very hurtful

and can be used to tarnish an entire race, gender or group. Stereotypes are often used in

comedy, media and other forms of entertainment, but these can still result in the pain or suffering

of another, even if the person doing the stereotyping believes it to be “all in good fun.” There are a few

stereotypes I have heard that are not negative or don’t directly bash an entire race, such as: Italian’s are

good cooks, Native Americans are a spiritual people and people from the Spanish culture are good dancers.

* What are the negative aspects of stereotypes?

There are many negative aspects of stereotypes; in fact there is almost an endless

supply. Stereotypes can hurt people; they can be very damaging to someone’s

self-esteem or confidence, they can even cause someone to commit suicide. Being welcomed

and accepted is very important for everyone; everyone needs to have the feeling of acceptance in

life, or they will feel as though they do not belong anywhere. Stereotypes can tarnish an entire

race or culture based on the actions of only a few people; it’s not fair for an entire race to be

responsible for the actions of a few carless people.

Answer each question in 150 to 250 words related to those stereotypes:

* What is the difference between stereotyping and prejudice? Use examples to illustrate the differences.

Prejudice is negative judgment against an entire race or ethnic group based on little to

nothing, most people that are prejudice were either raised that way, or have had a bad

experience with a person(s) form that ethnic group. Some people are even prejudice just for the

sake of wanting to feel superior. Here is an example, let’s say a woman is walking home and she

is mugged by a member of another race, her opinion of that ethic group will dramatically decrease

and she may become prejudice against all members of that race because of the actions of one

person. This can happen from any race, there are members of each and every ethnic group on

earth that are capable and have done the same crimes. An example of stereotyping, is walking

down the road and seeing a member of another race and assuming they are going to mug you

based on their race or differences.

* What is the relationship between stereotyping and prejudice?

The relationship is that one is having the wrong impression of the person before meeting

them, the other is assuming that they are all the exact same as the one, or two, that you have

met, encountered, or even heard about in the past. Stereotyping is the actual character or image that people

make about others who are different than themselves. Prejudice is a feeling someone may have, it simply

means to "pre-judge" someone due to a characteristic, religious, sexual or national origin element. Both

stereotyping and prejudice are very hurt full and can lead to the same pain and suffering of others, ad for

what, to make yourself feel better or to look “cool”? People are so afraid of what others think of them, they

are willing to do anything to be socially accepted, but what about the people that are getting hurt for your

own gain, they have feelings to and all they want is friends and to also be accepted at school or even in

everyday society.

* What can be done to prevent prejudice from occurring?

One thing that can be done, is to spread mass awareness about how hurtful it is, to stop and think

before you speak. They should implement a program in school that really shows how painful it can

be, maybe the program needs to literally insult all the students in said school to open their eyes

and show them how much damage prejudice can cause. There are many programs out there that spread

mass awareness about other topics such as drugs and alcohol, why not implement a program that shows

how painful prejudice and racism can be and how much it not only hurts one person, but how it hurts

everyone as a whole. Segregation is a thing of the past, we are in a time where tolerance is needed and

should already be accomplished, but many people still insist on bashing others or branding others with

useless and hurtful labels, Who takes the time to really sit and come up with this stuff? If people put all that

time and effort into something creative or inventive, not only would our country be a better place, but

racism would be a thing of the past, there would be little to no hate crimes or even other crimes based on

prejudice motives. We’re all the same no matter the color of our skin or the ethnic background we may

come from, we’re are all made from the same bits a pieces; skin color and ethnic backgrounds DO NOT

define who we are as people.
