School Shootings School Shootings are very serious and happen more than they should. There have been 142 school shootings in the United States since the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. People should be taught how to avoid school shooters. Not just turn off the light and lock the door in the classroom. The number of mass shootings increases each decade. School Shootings can decrease by Improving school Security, Cutting down on violence in the media, and doing something about gun free zones. The first way is Improving school Security. Scm said "Schools should have security entrances with armed guards and metal detectors similar to airports." All schools should have metal detectors at the very least and one to five security guards depending on …show more content…
Bill Smells once said ''Why do we allow the media and industries to glorify weapons and killings, why not start banning and preventing abuse of weapons in the media?" Media violence can also desensitize people.(Langman 45) Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were said to have memorized nearly the entire dialogue from the movie Natural Born Killers and NBK would later become the code name for the attack on the school.(Langman 57) Eric Harris said "The human race isn't worth fighting for, only worth killing and Dylan Klebold had a Schizotypal personality disorder. People with this disorder lack the ability to tell reality and fantasy apart and have social anxiety, paranoia, and unconventional beliefs. Dylan had a fantasy where he elevated himself to "Godhood." The third way is doing something about gun free zones. Most Criminals seek out gun free zones, so they are unchallenged. Also sixty percent of felons avoid committing crimes when they knew potential victims were armed. Dan Patrick says "only two mass shootings since 1950 occurred outside of gun-free zones." If you are in a gun free zone, you will most likely have to wait for police to arrive and on average that takes fifteen minutes. The longer it takes for police to respond the more people dead

...When it comes to school shootings in the United States, it may be appalling to many that it has become an american ‘culture’ filled with death. Not any other country has reported such outstanding school shooting numbers other than the U.S, and not just school shootings in general, but mass shootings as well. It is difficult to understand the validity of what we are dealing with because you can’t add up why such a well-developed country is dealing with these problems. Like it always does, it will come down to the dreaded gun problem that we have at the hands of the American public. Yet even though guns are the ‘provider’ in the problem, I think that the bigger problem originates with us. Our lack of activity is in fact the reason why we are...

...From School Shootings On February 18, 2018 Nikolas Cruz commited one of the deadliest school shootings in the US, the Parkland school shooting. A total of 17 people died. “A heavily armed young man barged into his former high school about an hour northwest of Miami on Wednesday, opening fire on terrified students and teachers and leaving a death toll of 17 that could rise even higher, the authorities said” (Audra). The shooting was ranked with Columbine and Sandy Hook in terms of deaths. These school shootings are causing people to call for more gun control. Cruz commited the crime with an AR-15 style sporting rifle. Now people want to move the age limit to buy an assault style rifle to the age...

...Columbine, one of the worst school shooting ever in the United States. Sandy Hooks, one of the most recent mass school shootings. Both school shootings, equally terrible, can be blamed for violent video games, like most school shootings. But are video games at fault for these horrific events? No, they are not, in all cases, is is mental health or parenting, not video games. There was shooting where the shooter claimed he spent hours honing his skills on Call of Duty, well let’s take a look at video games in general. There are cooking games, Mario games, football games. Do cooking games really make you better cook? Do Mario games really make you eat mushrooms and break magic blocks? Does playing an NFL game really make you a good football...

...During my research over the Florida Stoneman Douglass shooting I agreed with some on-going opinion. I feel there are many ways we can help aid the prevention of school shooting but there is never going to be a way to completely stop them. During every school shooting it lasts a total of a few minutes approximately a max of 10 minutes. The first idea I agree with is School Resource Officers, which is officers that are stationed at the school armed with equipment that is carried by an officer every day. This idea I believe in my opinion is the best and most arcuate. I feel that the unemployment rate in the USA is higher then what it needs to be more so for veterans and retired police officer that are still looking for a way of income. I feel...

...School shootings are something very serious and traumatizing for many people. Not everyone has the same opinions when it comes to how to solve the issue of shooting. In the articles there is a lot of information I agree with, but also disagree with. Being affected by the occurrence of a school shooting could be something very terrifying and traumatizing for people, especially children. “Gun violence is a crisis in the United States, especially for children, and a huge number - one that needs no exaggeration - have been affected by school shootings.” (John Woodrow Cox and Steven Rich. 2.) This proves that events like shootings can cause a great amount of trauma to people especially children. Another thing I agree on is making a public health...

...Complex Problem As society has changed, the standards in the United States have evolved into something they were not a hundred years ago. Guns, once a common utility in an average American home, have become one of the most controversial subjects today. The rate of mass shootings, according to Harvard research, has tripled since 2011. This has led to the question between the leaders of our country, “How do we prevent school shooting incidents?”. School shootings are becoming a commonplace among Americans today. Sadly, there is not just one single solution to this growing problem. There has been at least 95 school shootings since two years ago, according to the Chicago Tribune. Yet, the first step in bringing an end to this horrific dilemma is to allow a specified and trained professional on campus to carry a weapon. This weapon is not only for protection while an incident is occurring, but it also helps to deter potential threats....

...In 2018, America has been very active and hectic with school shootings. On March 7th, there was a shooting at a high school in Maryland that left two killed. The shooter was immediately stopped by the first officer who arrived. Also, there was a shooting this past February in Parkland, Florida. In this school shooting, 17 people were killed. When the officer arriver he stayed outside of the building. The shooter in this case was a student named Nicholas Cruz. These school shootings have led to the government having discussions on teachers having handguns and putting metal detectors in schools. Also there have been school walkouts across the nation. The President and politicians are talking about gun policies and are recommending more resource officers and counselors. At my high school in Statesboro, Georgia, many students participated in the walkout. Our teachers have been trained for “Run, Hide, and Fight” and our city has had two community discussions on school safety. From the school shootings that have happened in the past year, I think the President should recommend metal detectors and teachers should practice school safety. I think the government should not arm...

...But oddly, not many people now about the church shooting in texas where a man shot up a church with a rifle but was later shot and killed by a man with a rifle of his own, effectively stopping the shooting before it could further escalate. Recently the media also did not blow up coverage on the maryland school shooting where a teenager fired rounds in his school but was stopped by an armed school officer, stopping the shooting before anyone could get seriously hurt. The shooter Rollins a 17 year old, was not armed with an assault rifle or any rifle for that fact, instead he was armed with what most shooters would use, a handgun. This may be why the media did not want to cover this extensively, because it was not an assault rifle used and/or the fact that authorities actually did their jobs and stopped the shooter. The anti gun liberals are using the media and the minds of young liberals to advance their goal in banning all guns, possibly getting rid of the second amendment. After many tragedies the media have always said that the current shooting is the worst one yet, the “deadliest school shooting ever” when this is not the case. In the recent Parkland shooting it was...

...Twenty American schools have been tainted with blood and bullets. America's youth are terrified of going to school because the one kid in English is 'weird'. Civilians can purchase firearms used in the military for whatever purpose. A gun built for shooting down an army of men is available to whoever. Yes, mental health regulations exist – but how seriously are we taking it? The answer should be obvious. Imagine having a full year without your phone flooding with news headlines; "breaking news: sixty dead in mass shooting"…."seventeen shot dead in Parkland High School, Florida." Between the ages of zero and nineteen, forty-one children and teens are shot in murders, assaults, suicides, suicide attempts, unintentional shootings, and police intervention daily. According to The Brady Campaign, even children and teens die from gun violence. Four of them are murdered, and three are lost to suicide. Every day, forty children and teens are shot and survive. Thirty-one are shot in an armed attack, and one survives a suicide attempt, and 8 are shot unintentionally. It should scare us to know that every day our youth somehow come face-to-face with a gun, and they lose their lives due to something preventable....

...How would you feel if someone you love so dearly went to school one day, a place you thought was safe, and never came back? Well, this happened to many. One day the parents of children sent their children to school and never got to say, “goodbye” or “I love you”. Most likely regretting everything they had done or said to their loved one the day before, or what they did not tell them. Although the Columbine High School Shooting was a tragic event in history, society has benefitted by bringing about school security, practicing evacuation procedures during school, and brought awareness to the issue of gun control. The Columbine High School Shooting was a tragic event within United States history that occurred on April 20, 1999. The traumatizing...

Research Proposal Autism

...Research Proposal, Draft 1 It’s the morning of December 15, 2012, a day after the Sandy Hook Elementary Shootings involving twenty-year old Adam Lanza. After having to support by brother through the intense fear of being looked at differently for his disability following the shooting, I found the topic of the media scapegoating Asperger Syndrome as a main factor in school violence relevant to our class. As school violence has grown in the past twenty-five years, the media has similarly sensationalized the many killers, often times looking to diagnose them with some sort of mental illness instead of digging deeper into the environment of the individuals who commit these acts of violence. In particular, I am interested in examining the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, as well as the UC-Santa Barbara shooting. What I am particularly interested in learning more about is the media’s reaction to these two shootings in conjunction, as one was done at an elementary school with children ages 5-11, whereas the other was done on a college campus. This interests me because Asperger Syndrome is a social disorder, and the social scene of an elementary school is quite different from the social scene of a university. By providing statistical data, victim and killer testimonials, and historical data, I will make the main claim that the media has sensationalized school shootings and too often jumped to the conclusion that Asperger Syndrome is to blame, instead of investigating...

Basketball for 30 Days

...challenge. It took me many days to think of what to do for my 30 day challenge, I changed my mind many different times. When I finally thought of something that I was actually excited about, I stuck with it and decided to do it. For the 30 days I am going to play basketball every day, so I can try and improve my basketball skills. I am not only going to work on just shooting; I am also going to work on my athletic ability, jumping, passing, leadership, foul shots, and shooting. For the 30 days I will be trying many activities to improve the areas I have just listed. My research question will be: In 30 days can I improve my athletic ability, jumping, passing, leadership, foul shots, and over all shooting? I will try to improve my skills over the next 30 days by doing many things that I have done my research on and found drills and practices. While I try and improve my overall basketball skills I will also improve my overall health but I will not record it because that is not my main goal. Playing basketball for 30 days will not be hard for me because I use to play basketball every day when I was in high school however when I came to Ball State I have maybe played three times all year. I have played basketball for most of my life and I want to get back into the routine. For many people going to the gym and hitting the bag for a while is the way they go and blow off steam, but for me basketball is a way to clear my head and relax. I choose to play basketball for 30 days because...
