While the three points that are addressed are broad, the authors in both articles do a good job of breaking them down for the reader. The three main points that the two articles addressed were: Interpretations, trustworthiness, and authenticity.
In the article written by Schwandt, he discusses interpretations and how often times a problem that investigators encounter is deciding whether an interpretation is credible and truthful and whether one interpretation is better than another (p. 11). He goes on to discuss two approaches to thinking about the problem of justifying interpretations. Schwandt writes, “The first way to characterize trustworthiness criteria is by describing these analogs scientific understandings of conventional notions…show more content… Lincoln and Guba explain the basic issue in relation to trustworthiness is: How can the inquirer persuade his or her audiences that the findings of an inquiry are worth paying attention to, worth taking account of? (p. 290). They go on to discuss the criteria that have evolved, internal validity, external validity, objectivity, and reliability. When reading through the description of the criterion, I found they were similar to what Schwandt wrote in his article. On page 16 of Schwandt’s article he begins to explain in more detail the criteria that help in exploring the truth value of the inquiry in greater detail. While reading this section I began to wonder the effect of the Naturalistic Sense has on research?
Schwandt discusses authenticity in his article. He discusses that the first criterion is fairness and defines it as a balanced view that presents all constructions and the values that undergird them. I often wonder how much of the data that is collected is skewed because of a lack of fairness? If a researcher uses his/her prior knowledge and experiences to determine their own opinion, will that effect the fairness within the research? How hard is it to use your personal experiences to help guide your research while ensuring the research is fair and credible?
These two articles were probably the hardest articles for me to connect with as I read. I read each article multiple times, but it was still a “harder” read for me compared to the other readings we have done during this
