...Science and math integration unit I chose a culminating activity to use after the students had completed learning about fractions, ratios and percentages in math and in life science learning about the ecosystems and inquiry and observations to solve problems. The activity I chose has students looking at trees within a forest near the school. My rationale for selecting this project is that students in this area do a lot of hunting this time of year and are outside in the wilderness a lot during the month of October. I thought that this lesson would make them more aware of their environment and provide them a different way to look at their surroundings before they went off to the mountains for hunting elk and deer. I believe the students will be very interested in this unit of study and also it will help them to be more observant as they are hunting this next month. I tried to write a unit of study that students in this area would enjoy doing, one that would fit with their lifestyle and have a meaningful positive outcome upon completion. This is a summary of a culminating unit for science and math. Students will measure off a section of the forest and count quaking aspen trees and lodge pole pine trees within the measured off area. Students will then use the 12 processes of science and math skills to answer questions and complete investigations to solve the science question. The students need to collect data, chart it and analyze it to answer questions using math skills...

...Write an analytical essay (800-1200 words) in which you analyse and interpret Kirsty Logan’s short story “The Rental Heart”. Part of your essay must focus on the use of symbols and on science fiction elements in the short story. You may use information from the Internet in your essay. Kirsty Logan. “The Rental Heart”, 2010 (PDF) Kirsty Logan’s short story begins with: ”i met Grace” and ”the day after i met her, I went to the heart rental place.”

...Aristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher and scientist that helped form the scientific knowledge and theories we have today. Being the “first real kind of scientist” Aristotle had a huge impact on the science world. Without the studies of Aristotle, many of the scientist in the time after him would not have been able to form the theories and beliefs they developed by looking at the work done by Aristotle. As one will see, Aristotle spent most of his life studying, teaching and writing; making him one of the most famous scientist that lived. Aristotle was born in 384 B.C. in northern Greece in a place named Stagira. Both of Aristotle’s parents were born into medical families. It is commonly thought that Aristotle was raised by close family members, considering both of his birth parents died while he was a young child. For the short time that Aristotle had to live with his birth parents, his father taught him about medicine. He attended Plato’s Academy, at age seventeen, located in Athens. He stayed at Plato’s academy for twenty years as both a student then later a teacher. During his time here, he met Pythias, his...

...Software Evaluation Science Software Evaluation Lindsey Young Grand Canyon University TEC 537 Strgs &Intrg Prod. Software August 18, 2010 Science Software Evaluation Educational software is an important component integrated into most current curriculums. However, as an educational facilitator it is important to evaluate the software being incorporated and utilized by the students. Because instructional time is limited, it is imperative that each educational piece be relevant to the students learning and the overall educational goal. A great way to rate, or evaluate, is through the careful creation of a rubric. A rubric not only organizes the key elements, but it also breaks down these key elements and arranges them by relevance. The attached rubric allows the rater to evaluate technical and educational aspects of educational software. It checks the significance of the software’s content, the accuracy of the content, active or inactive links embedded in the software, graphics, layout, material that students are expected to know to be able to utilize the software effectively, age and grade appropriateness, and curriculum connections. Using the rubric, one can evaluate the overall effectiveness of two online educational software tools. For example, Sheppard Software was created by Brad Sheppard, to provide an educational tool for students in all subjects. Using the rubric, lets evaluate Sheppard’s Chemistry games on the periodic table. There...

...Essay – ”The Rental Heart” Love. Love can be good and love can be bad, although love is the most important thing in the world. Love is something we can’t be without, because where there is love – there is life. You see love in many different connections. Everyone has their own point of view on love. No one really knows the actual meaning of love – which makes love a mystery that many creative souls are trying to solve. The story “The Rental Heart” written by Kirsty Logan in 2010 deals with the feelings of loving another person. During this essay, the science fiction and the symbolism in “The Rental Heart,” will be analyzed. Kirsty Logan, who is a writer of fiction and journalism, also wrote the short story “The Rental Heart.” The story is written from Kirsty Logan’s own experiences with love, as she many years ago dated different people. The first time she got hurt, she was shattered and felt like nothing. The many negative thoughts in her head gave her the idea of pretending as if she had a Rental Heart, as she says in one of her blog posts on her website, “I pretended that I had a rental heart. I pretended that I could use it to be with someone and then return it afterwards, that it would be like nothing ever happened. I made sure that no-one I went out with left a scratch on me.” Later on, she met a girl, Susie, who became her inspiration for her story, “The Rental Heart”, as she proved to her that true love exists. In the short story, we do not know the gender of the...

...entail. The story “The Rental Heart” deal with love and the feeling you get when love fails you. When you are in love everything seems much better but when you break up everything turns dark and empty. It is for most people a fact, that you during your lifetime are going to get your heart broken. The heartbroken feeling of an endless pain that never goes away. Have you ever thought about, ripping out your broken heart, and change it with a new functional heart that will spare you from the heartbroken pain. No? Maybe it is because it is not a possibility in our world, but in “The Rental Heart” the reality is a bit different. The short story is a science fiction story written by the author Kirsty Logan in 2010. The story is told by a first person narrator who also is the protagonist of the story. Try to imagine a life where broken hearts is not an option. That is how the society works in “The Rental Heart”. It is a world where instead of feeling the awful pain of heartbreaks, you can just change your heart at the local heart rental place. Kirsty Logan uses the saying heartbroken literally in this short story. When we use the saying, we use it as a symbol of being sad and depressed over someone we love, which sometimes might feel like our heart has been shattered, even though that is not case. The short story is a frame story with flashbacks, the opening and closing constitutes a frame. In the beginning, we get to know Grace, the true love of our...

...Real World Quadratic Functions Christine Sandoval MAT222: Intermediate Algebra (ACR1438C) Instructor: Yvette Gonzalez-Smith October 10, 2014 Real World Quadratic Functions In some types of business being able to solve real world quadratic functions are very important. When we think about the quadratic curves I would point to curves known as the circle, ellipse, hyperbola and parabola (Dugopolski, 2012). I at first thought this was something that came about during my time but these actual quadratic curves came about during the ancient Greek times but they now have more real world applicability than one would think. Quadratic equations described the orbits where the planets moved round the Sun but also furthered advances in astronomy (Budd & Sangwin, 2004). A long time ago Galileo found some type of link between quadratic equations and acceleration (2004). I would believe that being able to solve real world quadratic problems are important in business because we should be able to show a return on investment or profit. We need to be able to analyze the accounts payable and receivable to determine how the business looks. Quadratic functions are not only used in business they are used in science and engineering just to name a couple of areas. Our task today is not only to show how important it is to understand quadratic functions but also to explain how important they are in business. When we think about quadratic functions we may think about the u-shape of the parabola...

...went to meet Sri Ramakrishna who was staying at the Kali Temple in Dakshineshwar. He straightaway asked the Master a question which he had put to several others but had received no satisfactory answer: “Sir, have you seen God?” Without a moment’s hesitation, Sri Ramakrishna replied: “Yes, I have. I see Him as clearly as I see you, only in a much intenser sense.” Apart from removing doubts from the mind of Narendra, Sri Ramakrishna won him over through his pure, unselfish love. Thus began a guru-disciple relationship which is quite unique in the history of spiritual masters. Narendra now became a frequent visitor to Dakshineshwar and, under the guidance of the Master, made rapid strides on the spiritual path. At Dakshineshwar, Narendra also met several young men who were devoted to Sri Ramakrishna, and they all became close friends....

I, a then fifth-grader, watched as the students practice for the NOBCChe National Science Bowl. NOBCChe stands for the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers. My parents were both heavily involved in the program: my mother, a middle school teacher, was a science bowl coach, and my father, a chemical engineer, was a chairman. As I listened to the practice drills for competitions, my love of the sciences, specifically chemical engineering, began to flourish. ...Like in Edmundson’s essay from last week claiming parents are the root of the “softness” in their children, sheltering them from everything bad in the world, DU seems to be doing the same thing. Unfortunately, in the real world, one cannot simply write an email to the vice chancellor of inclusive excellence about problems and inequalities they are facing, and have new policies put in place and a community email sent out, saying this behavior will not be tolerated. Although it should not be the case, students do need to develop a “thick-skin” when it comes to these issues because life is not as fair in the real world as DU is currently making it in college. In the DU Impact 2025, Chancellor Chopp identifies 5 promises to students. The promise of a “Holistic Approach to your Education, including Personal Navigation Skills to Life and Work” seem to not be completely met in this year of 2018. As a senior about to graduate, I feel nothing but unprepared for life after college as it relates to obtaining a job. As a liberal arts college, DU requires different courses be taken such as AI Society, SI Society, a year of science, etc. However, none of these requirements relate to daily life. Sure, my theatre class was fun, but I have no idea how to negotiate a salary, what a 401K entails, or how to prepare for a job interview. In...

...never discussed nor attended church. My parents did not discuss things with us as “normal” parents should. I think we were just supposed to figure it out by ourselves. I live with a man. Who, I have watched to see what his faith is. On a normal basis he does not talk about God or anything related. When his world seems to fall apart or something very tiny happens he then has something to say. Apparently God is against him, or he can not ever get a break. It becomes God’s fault and everyone around him. He has no faith in anything. He is like a kernel of popcorn waiting to burst at any moment. How can you show someone there is something you can believe in when they are so selfish? I am not saying that he has to summit himself to a religion but he needs to believe in something just so that he has something positive. My paper comes with no proof or theories but debatable topics and questions that should be acceptable to any person regarding any religion. Can we still practice Paganism? I would say the Pagan religion one of the first religions practiced in the Americas by most Indian tribes before missionaries came over to try to control what they ran away from in the “Old World.” Religious persecution has gone on for thousands of years. People are not running to hide anymore. People are started wars over religion. In...

...conditioned to believe that a higher education is essential for a successful future. College is like a stepping stone to becoming a responsible adult; college students become self-sufficient because of all of the new found independence. College is completely different from high school because it encompasses multiple facets; such as, finances, academics, and new found freedom. They go away to college and face circumstances that they would most likely come across when they finally do go on their own. Bills have to be paid, time has to be managed efficiently, and deadlines have to be met, just like in the real world. The major reason of going to college is, of course, to get a good job. ...Cultural Diversity in Life Sciences Janet Chauhan Chamberlain College of Nursing SOCS350: Cultural Diversity in Professions Spring May 2016 Cultural Diversity in Life Sciences Cultural diversity in professions is a critical success factor in all aspects of business, but none as much as in Life Sciences. The webpage and company chosen to research cultural diversity in life sciences is Bayer.com. According to Bayer’s website, Bayer is a global company operating in almost all markets in the world for a little over 150 years. For a company with such a long history of over 150 years and operating in 120 countries with a little over 100 thousand employees, the question is how culturally diverse is Bayer? Introduction Bayer was chosen to research cultural diversity for the inherent nature of the diversity in the company itself. Being that Bayer is so diverse, how does the bayer.com webpage portray cultural diversity. Germany is the largest country in the European Union, and Bayer is in the Top 5 companies from a market valuation perspective on the German stock exchange. As all multinational companies, and United States (US) being the largest market in the world, Bayer also has a very large presence in the US. Finally, the business model is very interesting where Bayer has three main pillars of business; 1) Pharmaceuticals (prescription medication), 2) Consumer Health (over the counter general medicines) and finally 3) Crop Science (crop protection and growth). Since Bayer...
