Do you know the Muffin Man, Who lives on Drury Lane? Yes I know the Muffin Man, The Muffin Man, the Muffin Man. Yes I know the Muffin Man Who lives on Drury Lane. The historical context of “Do you know the Muffin Man” goes back to around 1820, the time when the first known manuscript of this rhyme that the street had degraded into rat-infested lodging houses and tenements housing the poorest Londoners. English muffins were cheap and accessible back in the United Kingdom for the poor residents in the 19th Century. In the rhyme, the Muffin Man would be described wearing a long apron and his stock on a tray on top of his head or around his neck-baring his wares in the streets. There was a rumor that the rhyme had some connection to child abuse. Around 1989, a TV movie was starring Pam Dawber called Do You Know the Muffin Man? And it seemed to have fueled that rumor. It centered on the satanic ritualistic abuse of children at a daycare center and though it is a work of fiction, the references known cases of ill-treatment, caused “a backlash headed by Michael A. Our protagonist, Ellen Ripley, faces impossible odds as a seemingly invincible alien predator wreaks havoc on the crew of the Nostromo, taking them out one by one until she is the last man (or in this case, woman) standing. In most every horror, or as Blake Snyder would call it, “Monster in the House” film, the super-objective is to preserve life. Some, however, are more successful than others in conveying that idea, and Alien is perhaps the most triumphant of the bunch. The screenwriter, Dan O’Bannon, heavily juxtaposed the frailty of man with the invincibility of the alien. Neither bullets, nor electricity, nor fire can harm the creature, while it possesses a variety of methods of attack, from corrosive blood to razor sharp teeth. Therein lies the strength of the film’s super-objective: though the alien could easily kill them all, Ripley fights to survive. Alien is one of the few films in which the inciting incident is the very first event. The crew of the Nostromo, on their way back to Earth with twenty million tons of mineral ore, receive a mysterious transmission from a nearby planetoid and are prematurely rousted from their slumber to investigate. This is very apparent in Terry Gilliam’s film, Brazil, which portrays a dystopian, futuristic society that is dominated by a totalitarian government. I believe that Gilliam’s use of intertexuality, mise-en-scene, storytelling, and subversive depiction of society is what makes Brazil a cult film. The plot revolves around Sam Lowry, a low-level government employee who often dreams about being a hero, escaping reality, and saving a beautiful woman. One day he finds a woman who looks identical to the one in his dreams, but she is an alleged rebel and wanted by the government. Sam tries to flee with her, but through a series of obscure twists and turns he ends up losing her and his own sanity. There are numerous similarities and references to George Orwell’s 1984 in Brazil. Both are set in a futuristic setting as imagined by people living in earlier periods, both feature a totalitarian government that reigns over its people, and as a result of the government a nightmarish dystopian society is created. Bardot seems to vary on his opinion of this movie. He makes special note of John Mathieson’s photography declaring it as “superb,” as well as expressing delight in the soundtrack which was compiled by Hans Zimmer. Bardot seems to praise the movie for it’s depiction of anti-heroes, yet at the same time says that at times it becomes “slightly dull and uninteresting.” Despite his lack of glowing praise for the picture, Bardot expands upon the “expansive and spectacular” past pictures by Ridley Scott, the director. Having directed such films as Gladiator and Black Hawk Down among others, Bardot seems to think Scott has found a hidden talent in his new genre, comedy, declaring that his work on this picture is “marvelous.” Although Bardot mentions the performances of Nicolas Cage, Sam Rockwell, and Alison Lohman, I wish he had gone into more detail as to what was good about them, or in Cage’s case “unnerving.” He also refrains from mentioning other details such as setting, costumes, and camera angles which I would find interesting.
