From 1815 to 1860, the position of women in the United States changed drastically. They, of course, did not receive voting rights until the 19th amendment in 1920. This was about a century after they began their mighty fight for their rights. The “Second Great Awakening” opened many distinct doors for different people, and some of those were women. Women were seen as much more superior than men because they taught the people in their household about religion and educated them, they also began working in mills and fighting hard for others rights, and, most important of all, the found the strength to fight for their own rights. During this time, women had gained roles in churches. They were now able to be a part of the church. Finney speaks of his encounter with a woman, who at first, seemed more reserved, and after a while, she became “outspoken” (Doc A). Women simply needed a “boost” to place them in a position to be able to fight for equality. In 1848, the Seneca Falls Convention was held by many women. They spoke of the discriminations against them and Elizabeth Cady Stanton read the “Declaration of Sentiments,” which declared that “women and men were equal.” In 1853, a petition was written in which it was written that women should have the same abilities as men; they should be able to vote, hold office, and speak of any opposements to taxation and laws (Doc F). Another way in which women demonstrated that they would no longer let themselves be dictated by men was the “Bloomer costume.” Bloomers were typically worn beneath clothing, which for women was dresses, but a style began in which the bloomers became extremely visible and gave a sense of power and freedom to the women (Doc
