The Secret Life of Bees Thematic Analysis Essay The classic novel ” Secret Life of Bees “, by Sue Monk Kidd does not have only one theme. This novel is set in 1964, which takes place right after the Civil Rights Acts. This means that the book comes across difficulties with it’s characters including racism throughout the story line. The main protagonist, Lily Owens who is age bound of turning 14, experiences challenges during her childhood that change the way she copes up with her emotions as she grows up turning into a woman. Lily also had problems facing the truth about who she is and what happened to her mother.
First, In the novel the author Sue Monk Kidd, presents a strong message about …show more content…
She uses Lily Owens as an example. Some people don’t have the strength or abilities to face the cold hard truth, whether it has to do with good or bad. “There is nothing perfect”. ”There is only life,” says August Boatwright. August being the only one that knows the truth about Lilly’s mother, is the one that tells her what really happened. T-Ray lied to his own daughter just to weaken her and bring her down but her friend August helps her gain the confidence to face her father later on in the story. Instead of facing the fact, some people like to hide it or not talk about it, but the truth wil always be the truth no matter how bad it is or how good it gets .The author wants the readers to see that life isn’t always what is …show more content…
When Lily was younger she was told by her father T-Ray, that she killed her mother by accident and that the entire incident was her fault. The truth about her mother is revealed. Her mother wasn’t innocently murdered just as T-Ray who lied...had said. Lily’s mother abandoned her when she was younger. Lily feels sorrow and depression, but her friend and someone who she considers family decides to help her forgive her mother’s mistakes. August Boatwright who lost her sister May, who committed suicide learns that life isn’t easy. People really do make mistakes. She explains that her mother loved her and cared about her, but she was also human as-well. August helps demonstrate that it’s hard to forgive people sometimes. In this case, she is considered a hero for Lily, helping guide her the correct way.
In conclusion, the novel didn’t have just one theme. The book included the setting, main protagonist, static, and dynamic characters to have an effect on the direction the story line went. Racism contributed negative effects on the time the story was set. Lily who was dealing with her issues by running away from home was given help by her hero, August boatwright who helped her get back on track. She also couldn’t

accept the truth about her mother especially after all the lies her abusive father told her. Lily confronted her father which helped settle the problem between them. The novel helps
