...THE INJUSTICE DONE MY MOTHER by José Rizal Some days after my return to Kalamba, my parents decided that I should remain, and that later I should go to Manila. I wanted to study with a teacher of the town, even though I could learn no more than multiplication, so I entered the village school. At this time, an uncle of mine, Don José Alberto, returned from Europe. He found that, during his absence, his wife had left his home and abandoned her children. The poor man anxiously sought his wife and, at my mother's earnest request, he took her back. They went to live in Biñan. Only a few days later the ungrateful woman plotted with a Guardia Civil officer who was a friend of ours. She accused her husband of poisoning her and charged that my mother was an accomplice. On this charge, the alcalde sent my mother to prison. I do not like to tell of the deep grief which we all, nine sisters and brothers, felt. Our mother's arrest, we knew, was unjust. The men who arrested her pretended to be friends and had often been our guests. Ever since then, child though I was, I have distrusted friendship. We learned later that our mother, away from us all and along in years, was ill. From the first, the alcalde believed the accusation. He was unfair in every way and treated my mother rudely, even brutally. Finally, he persuaded her to confess to what they wised by promising to set her free and to let her see her children. What mother could resist that? What mother would not sacrifice...

...There are various reasons why extractions are performed in dentistry, and they are often due to caries, periodontal disease, severe trauma to the teeth, or orthodontic reasons.2 Generally, the dental practitioner will make the diagnosis, and the patient will decide whether or not to provide consent based on the information provided. However, there are some circumstances when it is the patient that requests the extraction, not the dentist. There are many reasons that a patient may request an extraction, such as personal finances, lack of education, cultural reasons, or extreme fear of dental treatment.2 When the request is a realistic option from the dental perspective, there is little disagreement between the dentist and their patient. However, it is when this request cannot be justified from a clinical perspective that the dentist is often faced with an ethical dilemma....

The naughty cake market in Mumbai has grown.Five years ago,one sole cakesmith monopolised the scene. Now there are at least nine more in the bakery.Ruchi Chopra, owner of Any Surprise Any Place, says that most of her cakes sport some kind of exaggerated body part and she also serves up interestingly shaped food. For instance, the innocent spring roll gets a whole new meaning. A Matunga-based cake maker says parts of the cake are assembled after her domestic help has left for the day.Although they want kinky confections, some clients find it hard to spell it out. They just ask for those cakes, she says. ...“When you walk out of a storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That is what the storm’s all about.” This quote from Haruki Murakami explains the events of The Pigman in two sentences. Lorraine and John are going through things that change them forever, good and bad. When they meet Mr. Pignati, they accomplish a friendship that could never be achieved with anyone else. John is going through great change, but Lorraine is becoming a person who can resists temptation from friends, be honest with everyone, and can even find the strength to prevent others from making dreadful choices. Paul Zindel’s miraculous novel, The Pigman, illustrates how Lorraine is resistant to negative peer pressure, honest, and resistant to drugs and alcohol. One way Lorraine is seen as resistant to negative peer pressure is while she is protecting Mr. Pignati during the telephone marathon. While playing the telephone marathon, Mr. Pignati offers them ten dollars for the L&J Fund. When John hears this generous offer, his...

...Not Be Legalized Samantha Davis PHI 208 Ethics and Moral Reasoning Prof. Paige Erickson November 30, 2015 When considering what physician assisted suicide is and what the long term effects could be of legalizing it in all fifty (50) states, one would need to ask if a physician should be given the right to administer a lethal dose of medication to a patient with the sole intent of ending said patient’s life? In 2006 the United States Supreme Court held in “Gonzalez v. Oregon (2006) that the Federal Controlled Substances Act does not allow the U.S. Attorney General to prohibit doctors from prescribing regulated drugs for use in PAS (Physician Assisted Suicide)” (Gloth, n.d.). There are many people that feel as if there is nothing morally wrong or right with “killing” or “allowing” someone to die so to speak, by way of a lethal dose of medication or injection. Physician assisted suicide is a means to bring an end to a terminally or chronically ill patient’s life by administering some form of medication either by injection or by mouth. While this could be considered one of the most pain free options, it is still not a viable reason to commit suicide. A Utilitarian would argue that by doing what causes the greatest happiness to a person should be done. When looking at physician assisted suicide from this view it is easily understood that PAS (Physician Assisted Suicide) is a means to an end, an end of a life. By forcing an end to the pain that riddles their body daily would...

...The Negative effects of facebook So, there you are, on a Saturday morning with your favorite cup of coffee caressing your senses and relaxing your brain, sitting at your desk and browsing on Facebook. You have 34 new notifications since last night that you logged out, 5 group invitations, 1 suggested page, 2 cause invitations and 3 friend requests, one of which is of an unknown person. You are not new in Facebook. You've been using it for almost two years now. And what you do this Saturday morning is what you've been doing nearly all Saturday mornings since Facebook joined your life. When the weather is nice, you ignore half of the invitations for new apps and you quickly accept the group and the cause invitations so that you go out and enjoy life. Only later, when the weather is bad and you have to stay indoors, you start deleting apps, causes, groups and people. And this goes on and on, relentlessly. Whether you have realized it or not, Facebook is a real part of your life, is a real partner whom you have to see for good morning and kiss for good night. What changes over time is your degree of addiction; as it happens with all love-hate relationships. You don’t think you are a Facebook addict. Social networking is just a part of your generation that feels more comfortable with text messaging, chatting and online communication. But, hey! Your generation counts nearly forty years already, while Facebook is around the last five. Supposedly, social networking is addressed to the...

...Author Note This paper was prepared for AMBA 600 Goleman and McCrimmon Assignment Summary and Discussion Summary: Thought leadership: a radical departure from traditional, positional leadership The article Thought leadership: a radical departure from traditional, positional leadership written by McCrimmon (2005) covers many different types of leadership. The article compares thoughtful leadership to traditional leadership styles. In the article the writer explains the differences between the several types of leadership and explains why thoughtful leadership is the best form of leadership. Shared leadership is described as when all members of a team contribute equally to the success of the team. The problem with this type of leadership occurs when the group no longer has a need for a leader. This typically happens when a team is self sufficient. They are able to achieve their goals with no guidance. Leadership at this point only negatively impacts the group. The group is successful not because the group lacks leadership but due to the overabundance of leadership. Each member of the group brings their experiences to the group allowing the team to be successful. Sometimes within a shared leadership organization disruptive leadership can occur. Disruptive leadership occurs when a member of a team takes charge of a group with no formal authority. This can cause major problems within the organization. Often times the productivity of the team will go down. The team will also...
