“Shahre Farang” was a huge box used in Iranian markets to entertain the masses. It had 1 whole that you had to bend and look into in order to see the short movie. The box as well played music. The first short movie was composed of a series of pictures that changed so fast one after another of streets in Paris.
"Shahre Farang" box had a very significant role in Iranian culture on the 19th century. More than it's popularity, this magic box was the beginning of the Iranian cinema. The first movies ever produced in Iran were because of "Shahre Farang". These "Share Farang" boxes were so popular back in their days that people would wait in a very long line for hours to watch the short movie one by one.
The second movie after " the streets of Paris " was a series of pictures of Nasseredin Shah, the king of the time.
Our old magic box or "Shahre Farang" is still very popular among the Iranian children and now it functions as a "Traditional Play Station". In kindergartens the teachers use "Shahre Farang" as a teaching tool and some referred to it as "the most convenient tool for kids who need to learn writing and reading" .
The early "Shahre Farang" boxes were made of copper and they could be different sizes. As the boxes all had the same movies to show back in the early days, the prices of their tickets would vary based on the size of the box itself, the bigger the box the more you needed to pay for it's ticket. The early boxes could only show a few black and white pictures and repeat the same music.
As 100 years have passed from the day " share farang " was new technology, Iranians have kept their love for this old entertainment box.
