...This Is quite shocking to me, as british society has, and always had, power and independence. Firduas later speaks of how she went to live with her uncle. She was very close with her uncle although he acted in an appropriate manor towards her at times. 'I loved school', he let her attend school, which at the time would have been a privilege. At this time in egypt, britain had given back independence to the country. Finally, after a history full of being ruled by others, egypt had a sense of power and freedom; Just as firduas as she goes to school. To me, going to school is something which is taken for granted in british society, and at the time education was compulsory, and still is to this day. Firdaus soon finds herself married to 'a sheikh and a man of religion'. Sheik...

...Bangladesh Governments: (1971-2009) Bangladesh’s first government took oath on April 10, 1971. The provisional government of the new nation of Bangladesh was formed in Dhaka with the president of the republic, justice Abu Sayed Choudhury and Taj Uddin as Prime Minister. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, 1972–75: The first parliamentary elections held under the 1972 constitution were in March 1973, with the Awami League winning a massive majority. No other political party in Bangladesh's early years was able to duplicate or challenge the League's broad-based appeal, membership, or organizational strength. Mujib and his cabinet having no experience in governance nor administration, relied heavily on experienced civil servants and political factions of the Awami League, the new Bangladesh Government focused on relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of the economy and society. Mujib nationalised the entire economy, banking and industrial sector. Economic conditions took a serious downturn. On top of that heavy corruption among his own party members, factions and senior leadership also added to the devastation and famine. The then U.S. Secretary of State termed Bangladesh a Bottomless Basket. In December 1974, Mujib decided that continuing economic deterioration and mounting civil disorder required strong measures. After proclaiming a state of emergency, Mujib used his parliamentary majority to win a constitutional amendment limiting the powers of the legislative and judicial branches...

...To be or not to be: Social Entrepreneurship in Kashmir. “Today that land of Kashmir, under the heels of hardship and misfortune, has become weak, vulnerable and impoverished; A land, which was once known among the wise, as Little Iran.” -Sir M. Iqbal (Armaghan-e-Hijaz-24) The idea of social entrepreneurship in a society as politically unstable and volatile as Kashmir is, however, new. This latent idea has been in hibernation mode for far too long, resulting in regrettable social, economical, and psychological consequences. This dormancy is a result of deep rooted ignorance and misplaced information about the career paths which trace its origins in the imperial Maharaja’s Rule of pre-independent India where people who used to work for the government were usually better off than ordinary people doing peasantry jobs. Decades of political uncertainty has further escalated the doubts on success in business, hurtling the Kashmiri youth deep into the psychological abyss where pursuing their dreams as remained, as such, a dream. Throw in some statistics in the gloomy picture and the picture gets even darker: life expectancy, in part due to access to better medical care and in part due to casual improvement in wages, is ever increasing, and with the fertility rates unchanged, causes an unprecedented “pot belly” in the population pyramid. This accumulation of a young population further exacerbates the unemployment quagmire. According to a report by Mercy Corps, a non-government...

...Since the partition of subcontinent in 1947 into two independent states, Pakistan and India, the political situation in the region has been volatile. Both these countries have strained relations and have fought two major wars resulting in the cession of East Pakistan. The real bone of contention between the two countries is Kashmir. The people of Kashmir have expressed their desire to accede to Pakistan but India creates hurdles in the fulfillment of their desire. The state of Jammu and Kashmir came into existence in 1848. Gulab Singh, Dogra Rajpot, bought it for RS. 7500000 from Lord Lawrence. The state has an area of 84,471 square miles. It has 902 miles long border with Pakistan and with India 317 miles only. The three main rivers of Pakistan, namely, the Indus, the Jhelum and the Chenab are their sources in Kashmir. The two roads that link Kashmir with the rest of the world also lie through Pakistan. More than 80% of the people of Jammu and Kashmir are Muslims. Thus geographically, culturally, economically and religiously Kashmir is an integral part of Pakistan. But India has never accepted this fact. The result is that Kashmir has become an apple of discord between Pakistan and India. The Kashmiris were leading a miaerable life. They were treated as slaves. They had no status in society. They were always at the mercy of the Dogras and the Hindus of the state. The result of this suppression and oppression was that the people of Jammu and Kashmir stood against the Maharaja’s...

...Tamnun E Mursalin "Digital Bangladesh" is currently the most commonly used words in politics, media, among the intellectuals and the civil societies. Since our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her party's election manifesto pledged to develop a digital Bangladesh by 2021, it has given a great hope to the citizens of Bangladesh. It turned out to be an opportunity for our prime minister to be in the United States during the time of election, and experiencing the Obama election campaign. Her learning has helped Awami League wining the election in Bangladesh in 2008 with Obama-like campaign strategy-the call for 'change', which has been responded widely by the Bangladeshi citizens. However, the focus here is Digital Bangladesh, widely accepted by Bangladeshi people from all walks of life. Not too many people understood the concept of digital Bangladesh but they believed it, as something related to information technology. It has been widely accepted by a good number of young voters, believing that the concept of Digital Bangladesh will solve most of our national crisis involving corruption, unemployment, illiteracy, poverty and price-hike. Even though without knowing Bangladesh has already gone through a bit of experience on digitization through few national level of ICT projects, such as, Chittagong Customs Automation System, selection process of teletalk mobile user through internet, project initiated by the pervious government on machine-readable digital passport system and finally...

...Empowering the RMG girl Over the past three decades the Readymade Garment (RMG) sector has become crucial to Bangladesh’s economy. According to the WTO, Bangladesh became the fourth largest RMG producing country in the world after China, EU-27 and Turkey while it has been the largest exporter of cotton T-shirts and the second largest exporter of cotton pullover and jeans for the European Union. Also, Bangladesh’s exports of cotton trousers in the USA ranked second by volume. The RMG sector contributes a staggering 78 per cent of Bangladesh’s foreign exchange earnings, keeps many associated service businesses going and provides employment to millions of workers, approximately 80 per cent of whom are women, who otherwise would be hard pressed to find wage labour. Looking into many scientific studies and popular discourses, it is an undeniable fact that the Bangladeshi women workers in the RMG industries in the era of globalisation are absolutely deprived of their labour rights, vividly manifested in the country’s labour law. It is equally significant that a large number of industrial reserve army entered in the formal labour force, who otherwise would have lived unemployed or underemployed. This is why one important debate among the policymakers, academics and the experts is whether the rural, migrant workers who enter the new manufacturing factories in ‘Majority World’ countries experience significant changes in their lives. From the economic point of view there is no doubt that...
