In Shotoku to Nara era, Confucianism had a large impact on Japanese political structures. Japan sent an envoy to China in order to assimilate Chinese developed and outstanding culture. Confucianism is considered to be the oldest religious and philosophical ideas which had a huge influence to Japan. For instance, in Shotoku’s The seventeen-article Constitution, there is one cite from one Chinese literature. “Under the heavens there is no land which is not the king’s land. Among holders of land there is none who is not the king’s vassal.” From this sentence, it is clear that the document was quite influenced by Confucianism literatures and words.
