...Can the legalization of Marijuana benefit us? A Review of Literature Recently the legalization of marijuana has brought up many concerns. From economy stimulation to lessening drug related crimes, like the smuggling of Marijuana to the United States. According to recent news posts, several states are voting on the legalization of marijuana. Charles Stimson says "Marijuana should continue to stay illegal because it is a gateway drug, impairs bodily and mental functions and is related to increased violence." (Charles Stimson, 1) After that statement Charles continues to add a link containing "The Facts" but when you navigate to the link it isn't a valid link. So where exactly are "The Facts" you might ask? Charles later mentions that "Marijuana is not like a glass of wine, it doesn't have any known healthy properties." (Charles Stimson, 1) Throughout the entire article Charles continues to comment on negative properties of Marijuana without any proven facts or non-fiction data. Everything is bias and based on how he feels on the subject. He even dared to say that "30% of Americans that used marijuana for an entire month became dependent on the drug," (Charles Stimson, 2) without proof of how he got this number. Did the 30% fall from the sky, was it randomly generated, or just another bias opinion by Charles Stimson? 1. What are the benefits of the legalization of Marijuana? Marijuana is the most used drug in the United States. It is used for medicinal purposes...

...Trent Anderson Hour 2 Should the Government Legalize Marijuana? The government should not legalize marijuana, because of the health concerns associated with marijuana. In the US alone there are twenty two million users of marijuana (video). Is this a viable reason to why the government should legalize marijuana? No, some people in this country say it should be legal because of the health benefits, but they aren’t looking at the side of where marijuana can cause major health problems/risks. According to the national institute on drug abuse marijuana can be believed to cause an increase in heart rate, this could put the smokers at a high risk for having a heart attack or stroke (Article 2). The biggest piece of the puzzle in which marijuana should not be legalized one of the biggest pieces of that is to which it can cause major health concerns. Though this drug has had some positive impacts in some situations it can still cause those other health conditions. As you’re smoking marijuana which contains carcinogen it can make you attracted to other things with carcinogen in them such are cigarettes (Article 2). Smoking cigarettes can put major tolls on your body such as developing lung cancer. Tell me, why should we legalize a drug that can make the same health risks as cigarettes? Cigarettes cost $250 billion dollars in health care every year; so why would we want to legalize something that makes that price rise? To smoke marijuana it can touch on the economic side as well...

...Cesar Pazmino Sub: Critical Thinking Mid-term Exam Due: 11/3/2014 My argument: Marijuana is a dangerous substance. A dangerous substance should not be legalize. Therefore marijuana should not be legalize. 1. Deconstruct the Argument: a. Paraphrase the premises and conclusions in your own words: Premise 1: Marijuana is a dangerous substance. Premise 2: A dangerous substance should not be legalize. Conclusion: Therefore marijuana should not be legalize. b. Convert the argument structure into an equation structure, as done in class. The equation we used in class if A=B, B=C, Therefore A=C Marijuana = A Dangerous substance = B Should not be legalize = C Marijuana (A) = Dangerous substance (B) Dangerous substances (B) = should not be legalized (C) Marijuana (A) = should not be legalized (C) 2. Analyze the argument: a. This argument is a deductive argument because the premises are stated by facts rather than assumptions of uncertainty; key words such as “most likely” would make the argument an inductive argument. In a deductive argument the conclusion is directly reached through logical rules from the premises. Meanwhile, inductive is reached by generalizing the information of the premises. In my argument it states that marijuana is a dangerous substance and dangerous substance shouldn’t be legalize. These are direct statements that don’t give any generalization; leading to its conclusion. Each of these differences makes this argument be a deductive...

...always looked down on marijuana because it is considered a drug. What people do not understand is it can be used for medicinal purposes. Marijuana is more than just a drug people sit on the couch and smoke. The medicinal use of marijuana is the act of smoking the substance as a pain reliever prescribed by the doctor. Several countries and some states in the United States have actually passed this plant with a forward thinking perspective. They are looking further down the road and recognizing the benefits of marijuana instead of looking down on it for being a drug. The legalization of marijuana has been effective in boosting the economy in places it has been legalized in, while also adding many jobs to those places and dropping the crime rates for the substance....

...Legalizing Marijuana Thomas Hendricks SOC120: Introduction to Ethics & Social Responsibility Instructor: Wendell Johnson 11/18/13 Introduction The legalization of Marijuana has long been a debate and will no doubt continue. While it has its supporters it also has opposition against legalizing it. This paper will look at the argument for legalization and the argument against legalizing it. It will also look at Marijuana use for medical purposes and how that too affects the arguments on both sides. There has been a long debate to legalize marijuana for many years. It now appears that many Americans are favoring legalizing Marijuana and this may have gotten a boost from accepted medical use in some states. Many states allow the use of medical marijuana for cancer patients, multiple sclerosis patients and as Dr. Sanjay Gupta who worked on a documentary called “Weed” for CNN stated the case for medical use of marijuana when he answered a viewer question on his change in opinion of medical use marijuana “Take neuropathy, a severe nerve pain that's often treated with narcotic pain relievers. Yet marijuana has proven to be effective, with few side effects. Every 19 minutes, someone in the United States dies from a prescription drug overdose, usually narcotics. I couldn't find one documented fatality from a marijuana overdose. Marijuana can also ease nausea from chemotherapy treatments, tremors, and epilepsy. Still, I'm very concerned about young people using pot recreationally;...

...Should Marijuana be Legalized By: Susan Cooper Starting in the 1600’s the hemp plant was grow as a trade good. It was used for rope and fabric though out the 18th and 19th centuries. In the mid 1800’s they started using part of the plant to make cannabis and use it for medical use. With this new drug on the market the department of agriculture wanted to place regulations on it. After all the testing they did on the drug they considered it to be poison. In the early 1900’s states had to label it as such and show all ingredients in it. A few states started to require prescriptions for the sale of the drug. In 1938 the Federal Pure Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act of 1938 was passed. This law set strict standards for prescription, non-prescription drugs and also food. This made the drug cannabis or marijuana a dangerous and illegal drug. This is still the law we have in affect as of today. Lately a lot of people are up in arms about the law and some believe it should be changed. Some believe that there are more benefits to marijuana if it was legal. The Cons: People believe marijuana should remain and always be illegal. Just like any drug marijuana is addictive according to Dr. Drew Pinsky. He said “It would be malpractice to say that cannabis isn't addictive. Anybody who's experienced it, actually been addicted to it, knows how profound that addiction is. The difficult thing about marijuana addiction is some people, even though they're addicted can do fine with it for many...

...Why Marijuana Should Be Legalized Most people believe that drugs such as marijuana, molly and cocaine should be illegal. They say that these drugs are dangerous and that people should not use them. However, we have to keep in mind that people have every right to do what they want to their own body. Of course, by people it is inferred that we mean adults. Children cannot be permitted to use drugs because they lack the ability to fully understand the consequences of drug use. Adults have the capacity to understand the consequences for their actions. It is not illegal to make mistakes or have poor self-regard. If a mentally competent adult wants to use drugs he or she has every right to do so. In the article from the USA Today, “Don’t legalize pot just for the high of it,” the author makes a bold stand against the legalization of marijuana. The article states that it is to high risk to legalize marijuana and should remain illegal. “Modern marijuana can be very powerful, potent enough to make it dangerous to drive or operate other machinery under the influence (Editorial, 2012)”. Last time I checked driving under the influence of any kind of drug poses a risk. People drive while under the influence of prescription medications all of the time. The article states that marijuana is very potent. Legalizing marijuana would provide a higher level of regulation of the farming of the product. The government will have control over its potency. Because the government is regulating it the...

...Legalizing Marijuana College Eng. Marijuana also known as Cannabis is one of the biggest drug in the U.S.A. and I believe it should be legalized because of certain reasons and examples that I have. Marijuana, second from experience and from other people, they said they haven’t heard people getting sick from smoking weed so it’s like helping you not getting you sick, the only thing that’s bad is the type of stuff u smoking out of, Last but not least I believe it would bring down crime rate in the U.S.A. I know for a fact that you cannot die from marijuana, the reason I say that is because I still haven’t heard a story or an article about somebody dying from smoking weed. Plus I know a lot of people that do smoke weed and they are perfectly fine. Even some people told me that smoking weed can help you out to a certain extinct; the reason why I say that is because I know that in hospital they give out weed to certain people that need it. Also it calms you down when you smoke marijuana so why not legalize it? This reason is the one that really made me say that marijuana is not bad for you because from experience and from other people I haven’t seen people or heard of people getting sick like that when they smoke marijuana I really don’t know the reason why, but I really need to get into that so I can find out because that is a good research question and project to do. ...Position Paper: Legalizes Marijuana Paul Frenzel DeVry University Professor Spruell 27 Nov 2012 It has been said over many years of debates, that a person truth is their perception as they interpreted it. I would have trouble believing that a better statement could be found for the issue of legalizing Marijuana. With modern medical science not only dispelling some the myths but finding new positive uses for the natural occurring plant. However with the new positive information coming to light we should also focus on some of the possible dangers, such as abuse. A popular analogy is made to the legalization of gambling in the late 1970’s. There are many that argue that Marijuana should be legalized and that is not the monster drug is made out to be. Has modern science debunked the myths, what are the current costs for enforcement, and what are the possible cultural affects? First Myths of the age old plant are varied but some of the more popular ones are that the use of Marijuana is a gateway drug, or leads to other drug use. Most research that compares the number of cannabis users to hard core drug users such as heroin or cocaine, has numbers that extremely small, that would suggest that there is no link at all (JFreter, 2009) . Another popular argument was that the use of smoking marijuana would lead to crime. Most serious research has suggested otherwise, mostly due to the fact that one of the effects of smoking cannabis is reduce aggression. In fact, in most countries...

...Should We Legalize Marijuana? In most countries, possession and use of marijuana, also commonly known as cannabis is considered legal, even in some states in United States. In fact, it can be noted that for many years, cannabis has been considered an illegal drug in most countries. Nevertheless, today, some countries have legalized cannabis while other countries have not. In particular, small quantities of cannabis have been allowed in regions such as Europe, North America and South America and the United States, where some states such as California, Washington and Colorado have legalized the possession and usage of marijuana for medical purposes. Federal government should legalize marijuana due to benefits toward patient health care, government tax subsidy and reduction in drug wars can strongly favorize the legalization of marijuana. Opponents of marijuana legalization, support their beliefs by using objections such as marijuana is not a proper medical treatment. They believe marijuana can be as efficient as any other painkiller or other drugs that mimic similar results. Opposers also claim that by legalizing marijuana will allow more people to abuse this drug. Primarily, cannabis should be legalized since it is used for medical purpose. Marijuana can offer individuals a higher standard of living. For example, Sativex is a recent drug that contains a major active ingredient derived from cannabis and it has been discovered to cure Multiple Sclerosis (Kmietowicz 89)...

It is about time that the American society accepts legalization of marijuana. Many Americans do not see anything wrong with a doctor prescribing them “legal drugs.” People think of marijuana in a negative ways because they are against the law. ... on if marijuana should be legalized for all purposes, to include medical and recreational. The question should lie as to what is the actual harm that comes from making the drug legal. Why not legalize the drug and place a tax, just like the tax occurred on tobacco. In the 1890’s, marijuana/hemp was replacing the cotton plantations and it was a major cash crop in the southern states. The product was being placed in some prescriptions; it was even listed on the United States Pharmacopeia from 1850 until 1942. During this time, using marijuana for recreational use was not illegal. In the 1950s it was an accessory of the beat generation; in the 1960s it was used by college students and "hippies" and became a symbol of rebellion against authority. It was being used by musicians and the people in show business. During this time clubs were opening in most major cities and these were tolerated by the community because the patrons did not disrupt after using the drug. The government has tried to use criminal penalties to prevent marijuana use for over 75 years and still to this day marijuana is now used by over 25 million people annually. Now that Colorado and Washington have legalized use and possession of marijuana and 20 states have legalized its medical uses, many people, including virtually everyone who has studied the matter, hope that other states will also legalize and ultimately force the federal government to repeal its strict criminalization of marijuana. Starting...

Gallop polls show that support for marijuana legalization has grown from 25% in 1995 to 46% in 2010.
