Marijuana, the Possibility of a Carefree Future
According to the government’s national Survey in 2010 on Drug Use and Health, over 22 million Americans that are twelve years or older use illegal drugs. If so many people are already using them, why not make them all legal? Although the idea of making every drug legal would give a huge economic boost to the economy, it is extremely dangerous. Therefore, the American government should only allow a few less harmful drugs to be legal. Alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, caffeine, and herbal drugs should all be legal as the economic and overall benefit to society outweighs the detriment.
Although caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and herbal drugs are already legal, marijuana is not. Marijuana should be legal as it has very little effect on the health of the user and it has the possibility of lowering the United States current debt. If marijuana is sold as a legal drug and is then taxed like alcohol or nicotine is currently, it would yield tax revenues of approximately 46 billion dollars per year (Ghosh). The legalization of marijuana would reduce government costs and raise tax revenues, saving the government roughly 8.8 billion dollars. As for health concerns, marijuana is not nearly as harmful as many other easily acceptable substances. For example, in Jodi Bullock’s article “Pot’s No Different from Alcohol, Legalize It,” she states that between 2001 and 2005, an average of 80 000people died from direct alcohol use or alcohol-related issues, such as vehicular accidents or violence (Jodi). In that same span of time, no one died from direct marijuana use. In this article, she states that a substance that has caused that number of fatalities is legal and available, while marijuana, which has not caused quite as many health issues, is not. She argues that this fact does not make sense at all. Bullock calls for a ban of alcohol, implying that this would make things fairer. She does take a drastic viewpoint when she considers banning alcohol, but who can blame her – it has cause unbelievable amounts of deaths in comparison with marijuana.
Although Bullock has a point in arguing that the illegal drug choice is less harmful than the legal one, a ban on alcohol would not be a good idea. In the 1920’s the government attempted to ban alcohol sales and consumption in a time now known as the Prohibition. This attempt to ban alcohol, however, proved to be futile. People found ways to acquire alcohol – whether it was by sneaking around town to buy it from a salesperson or by making it on their own. In addition, Prohibition introduced the country to one of its most dangerous criminals, Al Capone: “Capone’s multi-million dollar Chicago operation in bootlegging, prostitution, and gambling dominated the organized crime scene” (“History”). In fact, Mike Meno, the director of communications for the marijuana Policy project, stated that he believed that the illegality of marijuana to be comparable to the prohibition, even comparing the Mexican drug cartels to Al Capone. The Mexican drug cartels pose a severe threat to the citizens of the United States. Since 2006, approximately 30 000 people have been killed as a result of Mexico’s drug wars, and the wars are slowly spreading across the border to the United States. About sixty percent of the cartels’ revenue is generated by selling marijuana to United States citizens (Ghosh). So by making marijuana legal, the United States could save money and even make money that could be used to relieve national debt, and it would decrease the amount of organized crime caused by drugs and drug wars.
Herbal drugs such as herbal ecstasy, smart drugs, and melatonin should also be legalized. Many of these types of drugs are taken by people as daily vitamins. Because these substances are sold as nutritional supplements, not drugs, they are not subject to FDA requirements (Kuhn 33-172). Two of the most widely used herbal drugs are St. John’s Wort and Melatonin. St. John’s Wort is very helpful in making the user’s mood better, or acting as an antidepressant. Melatonin is a drug widely used for jet lag. Melatonin is a sleep aid and can be used as a “cure-all” that can help prevent aging and diseases such as cancer. Although herbal drugs are not as harmful or dangerous as other types of drugs, they can still pose a risk to the user’s health if they are abused, which the main is reasoning behind their label as “drugs.” As with most everything, it is possible to die from abuse or herbal drugs. By taking too much of a herbal drug, it can cause heart attack, high blood pressure, or even a stroke. However, the government should not make herbal drugs illegal because they pose little threat to users if used correctly and are more frequently used for true health reasons than abused to alter the user’s state of mind
Lastly, both alcohol and caffeine should continue to be legal. Alcohol, although it is one of the most abused drugs in circulation, is not as dangerous for the user if taken in moderation. In addition, based on history, making alcohol illegal is not a wise choice and will most likely cause more hard and crime than it would good. Caffeine is also a widely abused drug, although most people do not recognize caffeine as a drug: “Caffeine is a stimulant and can be found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, energy drinks, over-the-counter pain relievers, over-the-counter stimulants, and some prescription medications” (Kuhn 33-172). Fatal overdose of caffeine is extremely rare, but still possible. The main draw of caffeine use is to help users stay awake, alert and to improve physical performance. Caffeine allows the user’s body to store large amounts of energy and conserve that energy, allowing it to be used throughout the activity. Overall, caffeine is a relatively safe drug, yielding only minor negative side effects. The main side effects of caffeine are stomach issues and nerves or jitteriness. Caffeine is also a main cause of the country’s obesity crisis, as caffeine heavy drinks contain large amounts of sugar and additives that are detrimental to one’s overall health. However, caffeine and alcohol should not be illegal. The threats they pose to society are very minor. Prohibiting them would cost the government a lot of money, and it most likely would not even work.
Caffeine, alcohol, and herbal drugs should all remain legal, while marijuana should be legalized. Legalizing marijuana would have a positive effect on the economic situation of the country, and possibly even alleviate some debt by the creating of jobs and tax revenue. The benefit of legalizing marijuana outweighs the detriment because it would not only boost the economy; it would also decrease organized crime in the United States in relation to drugs. Furthermore, people are going to use marijuana even if it was illegal, so by making it legal, it allows for the government to raise funds.

Should Weed Be Legalized?

...The legalization of Marijuana is a highly heated and controversial issue in America today. Data shows that over 55% of Americans believe marijuana should continue to be illegal and the remaining 45% believe the pot‘s legal status should be altered. But why? Prohibitionist policies based on eradication, interdiction and criminalization of consumption of the drug simply haven’t worked. It has simply just places a burden on tax payer’s money and has been a wasteful usage of police enforcement. The prohibition of weed is also a direct infringement of our personal liberties, President Abraham Lincoln once stated that, “…Prohibition goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man’s appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes…” Marijuana prohibition laws strikes a fatal blow at the very ideologies and principles of freedom upon which our republic was founded and to the very civil liberties which government was set up to defend. So why is the basic liberty of deliberately using cannabis to alter one’s state of mind illegal in our nation? Because of the misconceptions of the drug and plain old ignorance. 3 Main reasons Pot hasn’t been legalized yet 1. It is perceived as addictive and dangerous The perception is that people get try marijuana and then they get hooked and become "potheads," and they suffer physical and mental injuries or even death and marijuana begins to dominate their lives. Both of these assumptions are false...

Colorado collected more than $135 million in taxes and fee on medical and recreational marijuana, sales in the state totaled over $996 million in 2015.(Investopedia, pg 1) Income and jobs is another great example. Persuasive Essay On Legalizing Weed

...The legalization of weed in America has been an important issue in the last few years and is a high priority to some. There has been a cultural revolution in the decade and the majority of the United States seems to finally agree that it should finally be legalized. With that said there are still those on the fence about the possible legalization of a drug that was once seen as a drug that would turn you into a lazy, stupid criminal. So should smoking pot be legal in every state the same way that smoking cigarettes and drinking beer is legal? The answer is obviously yes. The use of marijuanna for recreational purposes should be legal because it is a well known fact that cannot overdose and therefore cannot die directly from smoking weed which means its safer than most other drugs. The people who smoke weed or do any drugs are going to do them despite their legality so why not make them pay taxes and help put money in our economy instead of a drug dealers pocket. It should also...

...illegalize recreational marijuana for many reasons, but some people want it to be legal and others think it should stay illegal. When the states, Colorado and Washington had illegalized recreational marijuana, they created a major controversy over the nation. The Federal government on August 29th, 2013 said, "that it would interfere with the laws, but will provide regulations for the states to follow”. Before all of this in 1996, when California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana, it was used so doctors could prescribe to patients with Cancer, ADIS/HIV, and many other diseases. It was also used for extreme pains and also a treatment method for people with anxiety. Even then, there...

...In the states where marijuana is fully legalized it seems like anyone and everyone is getting their hands on some. Coming from Oregon where you have to be 21 to buy it, I see more kids with marijuana than I do adults! It seems like marijuana is being abused for what it actually should be used for in hundreds of peoples opinions. Anyone over 21 can legally buy pot without a medical card. One of the big issues with this is people that are under age have easier ways to obtain it. It is believed that marijuana should be used for medical issues only. After so many years of it not being legalized people argued about how its a medicine, that meaning it should be used for medical reasons only. A huge controversy still is whether or not weed should...

Marijuana Legalization Research Paper

...Marijuana legalization has been talked about alot recently in the media. There is a constant debate on whether or not it should be legalized. There really is only a two way debate on whether or not it should be legal, yes it should or not it shouldn’t. My personal opinion is that marijuana should be legalized. It would help out with tons and tons of health problems, lowered crime rate and would save our government lots of money. The first reason it should be legalized is that is would save the government money. The reason for this is that marijuana prohibition costs out government money and enforcement costs. If weed was legal, enforcement costs would be zero and government would wager on the sale of marijuana(https://tinyurl.com/yd53l99b)....

Medical Marijuana

...miscellaneous victor and its usage (Norml). The herb is called marijuana also known as pot, cannabis, weed, and God’s medicine in today’s society (Norml). Marijuana is a cannabinoid which is a chemical compound that naturally affects the immune and nervous system of humans and animals. It has been used for centuries as a natural therapeutic substance. This mysterious plant combats nausea, cancer, leukemia, and many other variants that still cannot be cured with prescription drugs. No one knows where this plant comes from, but findings of this plant’s DNA reach up to Northern China, thousands of years ago. For many decades this plant has been looked down upon. Media analysts and government officials in the United States give it a negative approach which allows the public to think negatively about it. Many people assume that weed is deadly because of what authority wants the public to believe, but what many do not know is the positive scientific evidence and facts that proves how effective it really is. The social policies regarding marijuana have changed throughout the years in the U.S. Although, several states have legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes, the issue still stands because federal officials have not yet legalized weed in all fifty states. The outcome of legalizing marijuana will be positive, but it’s up to the citizens to take action against the social policy and get it legalized by acting together. I believe the legalization of cannabis will decrease deaths related to...

Marijuana Use

...Legalization of Marijuana Should marijuana be legalized? There is currently a debate regarding whether Marijuana should be legalized. Marijuana should be legal in the U.S. This is because there has been a lot of automobile crashes and even deaths. This is all under the influence of alcohol while others are smoking weed and with that it decreases the deaths and the crashes there is. In order to solve this issue of legalizing Marijuana, there should be a law passed. The first reason that Marijuana should be legalize is because it drops in deadly crashes, this is under the influence of alcohol. And it’s tested that when your high there is a less percentage of crashing. According to the article “Medical pot tied to safer roads” Legalization of Marijuana” “is associated with nearly 9 percent decrease in traffic fatalities. Most likely as a result of its important and alcohol consumed by young adults”. This shows that the author suggest that they should put a law, because with the alcohol and the drunk driving has killed a lot of people and has caused a lot of damage as well other people are smoking weed and the traffic in fatalities has decrease a 9 percent in its car accidents. This shows that while you’re under the influence of alcohol there are more possibilities to crash then while been high and driving. As a conclusion there should be a law passes about medical Marijuana. The second reason that “Marijuana should be legalized” is because cancer patients for...

Legalizing Recreational Pot

...States and around the world. Those who support its legalization, for medical or for recreational use, fail to recognize that the greatest costs of marijuana are not related to its prohibition; they are the costs resulting from marijuana use itself. If the United States were to legalize marijuana, the number of users would increase. New users would not be limited to adults if marijuana was legalized, as regulations on alcohol and tobacco does not prevent use by youth. The legalization of recreational pot in America will increase the number of drug users at a younger age nationwide because many youth are more susceptible to peer pressure, the curiosity and sensation of what other drugs will feel like will grow causing more people to try and become addicted to other types of drugs, and finally because the recreational use of drugs will become a social norm instead of a taboo. The legalization of recreational pot in America will increase the number of drug users throughout the country as well as increase the number of younger users. There is a possibility that since this drug would be legalized, there would be easier access to it. Since access to marijuana would be extremely easy with stores selling it in shelves, more and more younger audiences would be able to get ahold of the drug and therefore possibly starting early addictions. In addition to possible younger users throughout the nation, marijuana affects brain development. When marijuana users begin using at an early age, the...

Marijuana

...The history of Marijuana dates back many years, and has served every culture since the beginning of time. Weed, ganga, pot, hash, bud, and mary jane, have become apart of many peoples lives today across the world. This growing “green” movement has become a huge topic of discussion in the recent years. Marijuana has been adapted to fit our lifestyles, and social environments. The love for pot in the United States of America is blatant and common. With such attention from celebrities, and rappers, such as Wiz Khalifa, Snopp Dogg and many more, Mary Jane continues to be everyones favorite girl. The realization that a great majority of people in America smoke weed, state governments such as California, Washington, Colorado and many more have legalized pot for either recreational or medical purposes. The legalization of pot nation wide is eminent, and in the near future. I believe that pot should be legalized because of its helpful medicinal purposes, the governments inability to stop this movement, and the incredible potential weed has to help state and national economies. The use of marijuana dates back 2737 B.C and has been used in civilizations for different purposes ever since then. Some ancient societies such as the Chinese used the herb for medicinal purposes to treat gout, malaria, and even absent mindedness. Other places such as India, the drug was used strictly for recreational purposes. Marijuana was first introduced to the United Sates in Jamestown in 1611 and instantly...

Marijuana, Painkiller of the Future?

...English 1020 Peter Marra 12 November 2013 Marijuana – the Painkiller of the Future? Emerging research is changing the public perception of marijuana. What was previously considered to be a purely dangerous substance now has scientifically backed medical applications, with many new positive effects being found as more trials are being conducted. This begs the question, to what extent should the use of marijuana be legalized? Do we push the boundaries of revolutionary treatment, or do we stick to our old beliefs and shut the door on this emerging field of medicine? I believe that marijuana should be legalized for both medicinal purposes, as it provides treatment for many patients who suffer from a variety of ailments, and recreational purposes, as it isn’t dangerous like other decriminalized drugs. In normal bodily functions, inhibitory neurotransmitters (such as Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA)) exist in the synaptic cleft, which is the gap between neurons. The neuron is the basic functioning unit of the nervous system. It is an elongated cell that’s purpose is to transmit messages from the brain to motor neurons, which allows humans to function. The messages travel via an electrical current from one end of the neuron to the other. These messages are then transmitted between the neurons in a pathway through the synaptic cleft – the gap between adjacent neurons – via chemicals called neurotransmitters. Dopamine is one of several neurotransmitters that causes the post-synaptic...

Argumentative Essay On Legalizing Marijuana

...by many adults and politicians, but has now been brought up more and more. So, should pot be legalized? That’s the big question. There are two sides to the argument at hand. Both deserve to be thought over and taken into account when presented only with facts, and considering with no opinion. Of course there are positives and negatives, but which are there more of? According to one side of the argument, alcohol and tobacco are legal and are more dangerous and harmful to one's health than marijuana is. Alcohol alone results in 29,001 deaths per year, while people die of tobacco smoking induced deaths at a rate of 400,000 deaths per year. People argue that cannabis results in 0 deaths a year, due to the fact that it is physically impossible to overdose on marijuana. This means that people will die of alcohol poisoning or drinking too much at a party, or getting in the car after having one too many drinks, in the past year and in the US alone, but...
