Show Me the Money
“The Pursuit of Happiness”
University of Phoenix Fis/200
Tonda Bolinger

I chose the film The Pursuit of Happiness. This movie is a very good example of how money can either make you or break you. It is about the real life a guy named Chris Gardner. He is a well-known stockbroker in California. Chris had just moved in with his wife and young son Christopher when he decided to use his whole life savings to buy these bone density machines. The original thought was that this high profile device would eventually replace the X-Ray machine by providing better imaging. Chris would soon figure out that these bone density devices were luxury item and considered to be well over priced. This making it very hard to sell those to anyone much less make any money to live off of. This was the start of all the problems Chris would face in the upcoming months.
Lack of money was a big factor in how the whole movie unraveled. All of the problems he encountered while trying to sell these machines made a huge impact on his income. This led to his wife having to work a whole lot of extra shifts to be able to cover all the bills, adding pressure and financial shortcomings which led to difficult struggles between Chris and his wife. On top of making sure all the bills were paid she also had the young son to take care of.
One day Chris was on his way to a potential sale. As he was walking along he saw this guy pull up in this very nice car. When the man steps out he asks him “What do you do, and how do you do it?” The man replies to him that he is a stockbroker; all you have to do is be good with numbers and have good people skills. This really gets Chris’s mind a rolling and making him realize he could reach his dreams. He asks himself “Why can I not be happy like him?” When Chris got back home he was eager to tell his wife all about it, unfortunately she was not as happy to hear it as he was to tell it. She told him that he was not being serious about their situation. The buildup of all the stress and the lack of faith she has in him leads to her leaving and going to New York to work for her sister’s boyfriend. The only thing Chris demanded from her was that she leaves their son with him in San Francisco. He made a promise to himself when he became a father that he would never leave his son like his father did him. Chris did not know his dad till he was 28 and he did not want this for his children.
It becomes apparent that the story of his life revolves around the desire to have money. Chris’s wife chose to leave because the lack of money. The lack of money is what drove Chris to want to be a stockbroker. His desire was so strong that he worked for free for many months as an intern with only the hope that it would lead to a fulltime job as a stockbroker. Not all of the interns became legitimate stockbrokers. One day Chris found himself looking at the face of a nickel and he wondered “How did Thomas know to put the word pursuit?” referring to the quote “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”. He then realized that happiness can never be a given entity; you need to pursue it. When Chris’s wife decided to leave they was already four months behind on rent, they was behind on their taxes. Money was definitely the reasoning for his family falling apart.
Chris became very desperate for money. His land lord came to his door one day because he was four months behind and Chris begged him to paint the walls for an extra week at the apartment. He also got in a fight with one of his friends that owed him 14 dollars. The friend felt he did not owe him the money because he had helped him move. Even after a big screaming match he did not get his 14 dollars owed to him.
There was one day when Chris got to work and there was one of the board members of Dean Whitter, the firm at which Chris had applied for, steps out of his taxi and asks Chris to borrow five dollars to pay for his cab fare. Although this amount meant nothing to this gentleman it was devastating to Chris. This would leave him with only 3 dollars to his name after lending him the 5 dollars. In what would be a life changing event for Chris; at the time was just another reminder of how well the rich lived. Chris lent him the money anyway even though he knew what pain it would cause for him. One day Chris decided to take Christopher with him to meet a potential client. He runs into Mr. Ribbon as he was heading to a football game, so he pretended to be going to the game also. Chris proceeds to tell him that he is going to sit in the seats on the upper deck of the stadium. He knew by mentioning this that Mr. Ribbon would offer him and Christopher a seat with him. Mr. Ribbon did insist on them coming and sitting with him in the box seats. He had told Christopher that they might be going to a football game so when he offered them to sit in the box seats Christopher was very happy. As they all get in the car Mr. Ribbons asks Chris why he does not leave his thing in the car, Christopher blurts out we do not have a car. Chris is able to save face by interrupting his son mid-statement by an “ouch”, followed by a comment about a bee stinging in him in the neck. This just shows what separates the rich from the poor.
Chris was able to provide for him and his son, although it was very minimal amount, through the bone density scanners he sold throughout his internship. By selling one machine was like providing groceries for one month, if he sold two of them that would mean a months’ worth of rent and some daycare. When Chris is going for his interview he was embarrassed to carry the machine in with him so he leaves it with a hippy that is playing music out front for a dollar tip. While he is in his interview he looks out the window and sees the hippy running away with his machine. This machine meant a whole lot to him and his son. If he could sell it they would have some money and now it is gone.
Human interaction became a big role in this movie, following money. Scenes such as the bone density scanner being stolen and the board member asking for $5 really depicted the harsh reality he had to face throughout his journey. It all paid off though when he was offered a stock broker position at Dean Whitter. As he is leaving the office the same gentleman that borrowed the 5 dollars yells Chris and hands him a 5 dollar bill all while saying “Told you I would not forget.” This just shows that even though he had to make major sacrifices to get where he is he never gave up and it paid off in the end.
In conclusion, this movie showed how money reflected on people’s lives. Chris’s wife was not able to stick it out with him and make it through the hard times and the financial problems they encountered. However, he thrived with the pressure of having barely anything to continue with his dream of wealth and prosperity. The message I got throughout the whole movie was if you dream of happiness then you need to be the one to pursue it to make it happen. You will have much pain and obstacles to get over, but through hard work and lots of motivation anything is possible whether you are considered poor or wealthy.

Show Me the Money

...John Tommeraas 9-4-14 English 102 TT2:30 #1 Persuasive “Show Me the Money!” College athletes should be paid a percentage of the sales that they generate with their play. They devote a lot of time and effort to these sports, and are awarded with a free education but student athletes are not allowed to work a job. So how do they have any money to buy everyday things; many college athletes have money problems while in college. It’s not only money problems for student athletes, they have to give up a lot of time to their sport, they are taken advantage of by the National College Athletics Association (NCAA), and they are forced to miss class and other activities. College athletes give so much time to their sport, and they receive nothing for it. “The typical Division I college football player devotes 43.3 hours per week to his sport — 3.3 more hours than the typical American work week”.(Edelman) If college athletes dedicate that many hours a week to a sport, they should be given some type of compensation. These college athletes don’t have much time for any other activities besides their respected sport. So they don’t have much of a college experience, college is more of a transition time for the best athletes. They’re only in college because the pro level of their sport requires them to be out of high school for a certain period of time. Students are also forced to attend mandatory study halls and tutor sessions. Student athletes can also be suspended from their sport if they...

Show Me the Money Case Review

...Many of the local and national headlines are calling attention to how universities will be handling large budget cuts and tumbling balances in endowment funds. The market downturn and struggling economy are mainly to blame for these budget cuts. As a student, my main concern is will I still be able to take the courses I need and want. Our textbook offered a look at break-even analysis, and the article I selected shows how break-even analysis can be used by universities to determine the profitability of all of its course offerings. While the "Show Me the Money" article is from 2004, it is very applicable to the current situation universities find themselves in. The following formulas are used to determine course profitability: Revenue – Variable Costs = Contribution Margin – Fixed Costs = Profit State Funding + Tuition Revenue + Lab Fees = Direct Revenue Faculty Salaries + Adjunct Faculty Salaries + Other Salaries + Opt Exp = Direct Expense Direct Revenue – Direct Expense = Contribution Margin Using these formulas, contribution margin can be understood as course profit or loss. After defining the formulas above, the authors applied it to enrollment data and were able to rank courses according to overall contribution margin. The courses with negative contribution margins were not making a fixed-cost contribution. It is logical for the general courses required by all majors to have a higher contribution margin due to the higher enrollments...

Money Motivates People

...of whether money motivates or money does not motivate employees I will be examining both viewpoints and then providing my own personal observation and opinion of the topic at hand. When I think of the subject and the importance of “Money” in a working environment I am reminded of the scene in the movie Jerry McGuire where actor Cuba Gooding Jr. who plays “Rod Tidwell” a professional football player is on the phone with his sports agent Jerry McGuire played by Tom Cruise and Rod is looking for a new professional contract. McGuire asks Rod “What can I do for you Rod, what can I do for you?” and Rod tell him it’s “a personal and very important thing, are you ready?” McGuire says “I’m ready”. Rod says “Here it is” and tells McGuire to “Show Me The Money”, “Show Me The Money Jerry” and starts dancing in his kitchen. He then spells out the word M O N E Y and has Jerry screaming the phrase “Show Me the Money” back to him with passion like he really means it over the phone. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaiSHcHM0PA). Now this may be a simplistic way of illustrating how money can be important to some individuals but it nonetheless shows that for some individuals it can be the only thing. Let us briefly examine that point of view first. Money Motivates There is no question that money motivates people. We are all looking to be paid a fair wage in whatever working profession that we are earning a living and according to studies money is a motivator...

Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun

...where money affects pride, how people view themselves, and fulfillment of dreams, as well as many more individualistic goals. In Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin In The Sun, money affects the Younger family rather significantly. Each member of the Younger family has their own dream but each one is fueled by money, or even fueled by a need for money. These dreams are especially important to the Younger family as they are an impoverished family with desires to fulfill the American dream. Lorraine Hansberry leaves us with the idea that in life dreams and money exist to feed and build off each other, and that dreams and money are equally as important to achieve not only a money-oriented American ideal but happiness. Ordinary

...3 October 2009 Out of the Ordinary To think of something or a person who has influenced me is a very difficult task. It took me some time to think of something until I came to this object. Most people would focus on the typical aspect of writing an influential paper on being a human. The interesting thing is, is that this object has been the television. Well, not just television, but the reality and fictional shows on television. If you can believe it, my goals that I have for my future have been based on some shows I have seen on television. When growing up, I always knew I wanted to be in a profession where I would help people. Whether it was to be a veterinarian, nurse, a doctor, dentist, surgeon, pediatrician, I wanted to do it all. Blood, guts, and gore were not a factor in making this decision. The one factor that did however was a surgeon on a reality television show. This show deals with so many different cases of people who want to improve their looks or fix a birth defect. Before I knew it, Dr. 90210 was leading me to the next big step in my life. Well-known surgeons from Los Angeles, Seattle, and New York were a part of this show. They each had their own unique talents and different “style” of performing surgeries. The person who I spend the most time watching is Robert Rey. He is performing the type of surgeries that interest me the most which is strictly “plastics”. The other surgeons are also dermatologists and OBGYN’s instead of focusing on just...

Ugly American Analysis

...he spread his Hollywood money to any and all criminals who then brings him to one of many back room slaughterhouses so he can get off on watching dogs getting slaughtered. What Americans who view these snuff films seems to overlook is the fact that he proudly states "I pose as a representative for a Rich American buyer who wants to make a weekly Dog Meat purchase to bring to America" What I find amazing is the fact that not one reporter actually says "Hey wait "Rich American?" Don't you believe that would adversely effect any American who tries to...

Manipulation In Susan Beth Pfeffer's Ashes

...He always picks up ashes late from school and makes compliments like you're one in a million, or you're just like your mother to make up for it. But he really give her those compliments because he wants to get her to steal $200 from her mother because he is in a desperate need of money. He manipulates her by taking her out to a brand new restaurant, even though he can’t afford it. And saying the money will be back by thursday or friday by the latest, and giving. He tells Ashes that if she does this they would be set for life and telling the little girl that he can afford it. This is significant because it shows that evil can come from manipulation. In this scene Pfeffer uses long and short sentences and descriptive language very well to show how manipulation the dad is to his daughter. The dad need money from his divorced wife and he wants Ashes to steal it for him. “It’s me she’d be angry at,’ dad said. ‘Which is why she’ll...

Argument with Classes

...like to invite you to join me in analyzing how a group of people believe they know better than all the rest that are in the world. We will discuss the worthiness of this assignment to see if it holds up to something we need. I believe this assignment is something to waste our time and is not needed for me to complete my life and was put here to drain my hard earned money. This is hopefully going to show course creators that students and teachers have a voice and need to be heard. We have people who make up the courses we need for the degree we are going to and they themselves have no idea what it entails to be one of us. They have there degree in what ever field they have done and want to sit back and enjoy the money students pay enrolling in classes that will not benefit them in there job or life after graduation. I am enlisting the help of everyone in the world who has attended or want to attend a college of there choice in helping me cut cost and get a better education. The purpose of us binding together and you reading this article is the hope we can make a change for the future. We need to get them to quit slapping us with bills for classes that will do nothing for us in the long or short term of our life. If they could show us or anyone could say the classes we took that we believe have a reason to be there I would gladly have you tell us how it has helped you in the field you are in and show us that we are all mistaken. I hope to show curriculum designers the...

Examples Of Hyperbole In To Kill A Mockingbird

...“The boy stood up, he was the filthiest human I had ever seen. His neck was dark gray, the backs of his hands were rusty, and his fingernails were black deep into the quick.” (Lee 29) Analysis: This quote shows that not all the kids in Maycomb have the best hygiene. This could be due to not having the money for it. Which ties back to the fact that a good majority of people in Maycomb live in poverty. This shows the reader that both Maycomb and the civilians living in it that it probably isn’t the cleanest environment. This help the reader be able to connect to the characters and understand where they are coming from and why they might act the way that they do. Lee uses diction in is choice of filthiest and rusty. Super Size Me

...Super Size Me Assignment To begin with, I have seen this movie Super Size Me before in high school. This is my second time watching it and I am still shocked by what is said in this movie. With that being said, I do eat fast food quite often. I eat it about 2-3 times a week. I do not live at home so I no longer get home cooked meals from my mom. I try to cook by myself sometimes but there are only so many things I know how to make and is sometimes more convenient for me just to drive down the street and get Del Taco or Weiner Schnitzel’s. Also with work and school I try my best to bring my own lunch or eat at a restaurant rather than going to a fast food joint. This film relates to the NF15 course in many ways, one of them being that when the narrator interviewed random people on the streets, nobody knew what a calorie was. This shows that people hear the word calories and see it on every food label and everywhere they look that there’s food, but still do not know what it is. This goes to show that people do not generally care about calories and how much they take in. Most people who eat fast food also do not know how many calories they are taking in from the food that they ordered. The foods ordered from fast food restaurants do not have food labels and only some will give you a nutrition facts sheet if asked for one. The film also showed that an order of small fries had 200 calories while the large order had 600 calories. That is 3 times the amount of calories...

Why You Should Increase Your Salary

...Increase Your Salary with a Masters Tired of working forty plus hours a week with little to no vacation time and living pay check to pay check? Me too! While working at Wal-Mart as a cashier with a salary of six dollars and fifty cents an hour, working long weekends and extended hours, I started thinking about making more money. I was thinking of more money to support my family better, and more money to upgrade my lifestyle. The responsibilities that I had at my previous jobs were not substantial enough to be able to move up based on experience. My responsibilities as a Wal-Mart employee included checking out customers, maintaining and making sure my workstation was neat and clean. I was also employed at a telecommunications company called Berry Direct. I was a telemarketer, and my duties included calling members and offering additional telephone services. My salary was seven dollars an hour, with no sick time or vacation time available. Not only was I unhappy with the amount of money I was paid, I was also unhappy because the job didn’t offer any benefits. I decided that I needed a better job, and started working with Blue Cross and Blue Shield. While the money was better with them, I was still unable to move up to certain positions, or move up to a certain pay scale without a degree. With degree level experience, it would put me in a higher income bracket. After doing some personal reflection I decided that without returning to school to get a higher level degree, I would...
