You never know what someone is going through, but a few nice words and always being there for them can help a person a lot more than u think. Upon reading the book silence I've come to realize that this quote is very much true. As the book starts you are introduced to the two main characters, Oakley and Cole. in the beginning the author shows the friendship between the two as well as the struggle her mother goes through while dealing with her silence. The book immediately begins with these few sentences "Most people have heard the phrase 'Silence is golden' and many would agree with it. People with screaming children running wild around the house or working in a noisy office. For me, however, it meant something entirely different. Silence consumed my whole life. It suppressed things I could never express." The author chose to use these few sentences in order to specify what the book will be about. From this the reader receives a feeling of curiosity on why Oakley's life is consumed by silence. The author proceeds by saying "My silence was responsible for my family's happiness. Cole and Oakley have been friends since they were little, when Oakley was about five she had stopped talking and Cole didn't know why. Although it is hard on him he sticks by her and is always there for her through anything. Oakley is always bullied and people call her a mute because she doesn't talk. The author creates an example of this by introducing a character named Julian. Julian is portrayed as a bully who doesn't care about Oakley's feelings, therefor he says "Come out with me tomorrow night? say yes". He does this as a joke to mess with Oakley, because of this Cole sticks up for her and confronts Julian saying "A joke, was it? Well, I didn't find it very funny.
