...Juvenile Crime Statistics Kimberlee K. Curley CJA/374 January 9, 2012 Joseph Maffia Juvenile Crime Statistics The following paper will include a discussion on juvenile crime statistics; the areas to examine will include the following points. The overall decrease in juvenile arrests, increase in drug offenses and simple assault, female, ethnic, and racial arrests, the increase in arrests for females and the decrease in arrests for males for violent crimes, and an assessment of tracking methods in measuring trends in juvenile crimes. Between the years 1999 and 2008, the crime rate concerning juveniles first saw a significant rise in juvenile arrests in the years 2005 and 2006. In the later two years there was approximately a 3% decrease in arrests concerning juvenile crimes (Puzzanchera, 2009). Property crimes saw a large increase whereas violent crimes were proportionately smaller in percentage; arson and vandalism are at the top of the list. The number of arrests made was larger than the number of cases cleared by arrests, this may be because juveniles are easier to apprehend than adult offenders (Puzzanchera, 2009). Arrests for simple assaults increased substantially from 1980 to 1997, a rate increase of 156%. While there has been a slight decline in the last two years the rate for arrests of simple assaults is still substantially higher than it was beginning in 1980 (Puzzanchera, 2009). Drug offense arrests have mirrored closely that of simple assaults, the main...

...didn’t chose the other argument. I will give you definitions of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, simple assault and simple battery. I would not chose argument number 2 Sharon should not be charged with aggravated assault and battery, but only simple assault and battery, since no deadly weapon was used. The reason I would chose this argument is because I would say the wine bottle was not a deadly weapon. I would research and see if there were cases that were similar to this case. I would prove that the wine bottle was not broken at the time of the event and that is why it was not a deadly weapon. Here is a case of a women hitting her husband with a wine bottle. Susan Van Cook, 42, of Trails End was charged with two misdemeanors (Leslie Korngold). I would not chose argument number 1 because it would be hard to prove by reasonable doubt that she did this because she was drunk. I am thinking that if you use argument number 1 you could also say she was afraid he was going to hit her first. I think that this argument would be too hard to prove. I could be wrong and this may be easier to prove then I think. Here are the definitions of aggravated assault and aggravated battery. aggravated assault n. the crime of physically attacking another person which results in serious bodily harm and/or is made with a deadly or dangerous weapon such as a gun, knife, sword, ax or blunt instrument. Aggravated assault is usually a felony punishable by a term in state prison (1981-2005 by Gerald...

...Juvenile Crime Statistics Angela Coffey CJA/374 May 13, 2015 Professor Erica Williams Juvenile Crime Statistics The overall decrease in juvenile arrests according to Puzzanchera (December 2009), “the latest data reflect such progress, with a 3% decline in overall juvenile arrests from 2007 to 2008 and a 2% decrease in juvenile arrests for violent offenses over the same timeframe.” In addition to Puzzanchera (December 2009), “similar positive trends are evidenced across most offense categories for both male and female and white and minority youth, in effect reversing the modest increases in juvenile arrests reported for 2005 and 2006. Nonetheless, although such trends are encouraging, they should not provide a pretext for a misplaced sense of complacency.” On the other hand, there is one section that should be or at least looked into further, is the research on why minority youths are more susceptible of becoming processed into the juvenile justice system. In 2008, minorities were ten times higher to be in the juvenile justice system than white youths (Puzzanchera, December 2009). Juvenile Crime Statistics

...Juvenile Crime Statistics Juvenile Crime Statistics Law enforcement agencies like to figure out statistics whether it be for adults or juveniles. Statistics give law enforcement agencies an overall view of the rates, whether rates increased or decreased and also allows law enforcement agencies to show the people what is going on. Statistics for juveniles are just as important as they are for adults. Arrest statistics is one set of statistics law enforcement agencies track. “Arrest statistics report the number of arrests that law enforcement agencies made in a given year” (Puzzanchera, 2008). Males, females, race and ethnicity are different categories arrests rates are tracked and viewed. When tracking arrest rates law enforcement agencies can also see what crime more arrests happen for. Juvenile statistics show law enforcement agencies and society how the juveniles are doing when it comes to arrests. Overall Decrease in Juvenile Arrests Juveniles are being arrested every day for multiple reasons. When juveniles are arrested society does not hear anything about it because when a juvenile is arrested or involved in any sort of situation with law enforcement it is kept confidential to protect the juvenile. Juvenile arrests statistics for a given year show whether juvenile arrests increased or decreased from previous years and the overall goal is for the rates to decrease. “In 2008, law enforcement agencies in the United States made an estimated 2.11 million arrests of...

.... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The Uniform Crime Reports UCR Program from the FBI collects information on crimes reported to law enforcement authorities such as murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The this data is compiled from monthly law enforcement reports made directly to the FBI or to centralized state agencies that then report to the FBI. Each report submitted to the UCR Program is examined for reasonableness, accuracy, and deviations that may indicate errors. Any variations in crime levels may indicate modified records procedures, incomplete reporting, or changes in a jurisdiction's boundaries. To identify any unusual anomalies in an agency's crime counts, monthly reports are compared with previous submissions of the agency and with those for similar agencies. This report also includes detailed data on crimes cleared, persons arrested for a wide range of crimes, law enforcement personnel, and the characteristics of homicides such as age, sex, race of victims, and circumstances surrounding the homicides. The UCR presents crime counts for the Nation as a whole, as well as for regions, states, counties, cities, towns, tribal law enforcement, and colleges and universities. National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is created by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) and provides a detailed picture of crime incidents, the victims, and its trends. They improved the...

Assault and Battery

..."Assault and Battery" Assault and battery are two separate crimes. Assault is when a person tries to injure another person. Battery is when the criminal actually injures another person. These terms are usually coupled together and used as one offense. A person can commit assault and not commit battery. Furthermore, a person cannot commit battery without assaulting the victim. The Virginia law code states that when a "simple" assault and battery occurs, the criminal will be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. But when a person intentionally picks out another person because of his "race, religious conviction, color, or national origin," the penalty will be a minimum term of six (6) months and thirty (30) days in prison. There are different types of assault. One form of assault is, "Assault with a Deadly or Dangerous Weapon." When a criminal is charged with such a crime, the penalty received is a felony. A felony is defined as any sentence in which the criminal serves a minimum of a year in jail. A question that might arise is, "What is considered a 'Deadly or Dangerous Weapon'?" To this question, the response would be absolutely everything, if applied in any way that could be deadly to a person. A sock can be used as a deadly when if it is placed in a person's mouth and forces them to choke or cause other fatal wounds. Another form of assault is sexual assault. This term, again, is coupled with the term sexual battery. In the Commonwealth of Virginia, the prosecutor must...
