...To Snack or Not to Snack: That is the Problem “A problem exists when a situation has negative effects. Recognizing that there is a problem–being aware of those effects-is essential before you can begin to solve it” (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, 2007, p. 94). A very profound statement that is easy to relate to for anyone dealing with a problem in his or her day-to-day life. I find it intriguing how sometimes solving one problem can lead to another. The day-to-day problem I want to solve is snacking during the day. You may be wondering how that can be construed as a problem. It has, unfortunately, turned into a problem I struggle with daily. Here is my story. The Start Prior to some minor oral surgery, the doctor told me that I needed to stop smoking two days before and seven days after surgery. Keeping my health and healing in mind, I complied with the doctors’ directions. After surgery he placed me on medication to decrease the pain so the craving to smoke never surfaced. Once I was off the pain medication, it was apparent that I would need some tips to quit smoking. The Foundation for a Smoke Free America (1982-2002) website suggests several tips to help including deep breathing exercises; increase fluid intake for the first few days; be patient, the urge to smoke will pass; avoid alcohol, sugar, and coffee as it may increase the desire to smoke; and avoid fatty foods as the body’s metabolism may slow down. As I have heard in the past, people who try to...

...Fast Food’s Snacking Trend Now Has Global Reach Article | 10 Nov 2011 Between value-priced items and full meals, a new product tier emerged over the past few years: Snack-sized meals, desserts and beverages that drive traffic, improve profitability and broaden restaurant appeal to the widest possible consumer base. Now, this snacking trend has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, driven by growing consumer demand for variety, value, portion control, small luxuries and new dining experiences. The trend is particularly evident in fast food, led by McDonald's and its success with specialty beverages in the US, desserts in developing markets and snack-size items system-wide. The trend offers a variety of benefits for operators that vary by market maturity: In developed markets, snacking items can be used to drive incremental traffic and take share from competitors; in emerging markets, the same can be used to appeal to lower-income consumers who may not be able to afford full meals. A focus on taking share In developed markets, the effects of the recession have left restaurant operators fighting for share in stagnating, or even declining, markets. In Japan, consumer foodservice value sales have declined each year since 2004, and in the US value has not grown since 2007. Other major markets, including France, Spain and the UK, have all shown a net decline in value since 2007, and many are expected to see this stagnation continue through 2011. As such, operators in these markets...

...Causes and Prevention) Technology is one of the main causes of obesity. Media promotes all forms of obesity. Scientists are not sure whether it is the sedentary nature of television viewing, food consumption in front of the television, food advertising, or a combination of them all that promotes obesity (Finan, 14). Obviously, obesity is lowest among children who watch less television and greater for those who watch more television. Everyday millions of children sit in front of the television. Barney baby sits children everyday. The sedentary forms of entertainment available to children today are slowly killing them. Children and teens are exposed to hundreds of food commercials. Sitting and watching these commercials promotes snacking, and snacking promotes obesity (Childhood Obesity: Causes and Prevention). People who spend a significant amount of time watching TV sharply increase the risk for obesity. Instead of sending an overweight child out to run and play, adults allow them to sit and eat. Homework is the number one excuse for parent on why their child has no time for exercise has also helped to increase obesity (Your child's weight,...

Swetha (B12106) Saswat Nanda (B12109) Vini Khabya (B12126) 1/12/2014 Britannia NutriChoice Case Study Realigning a successful health positioning with the demands of Indian consumers' changing lifestyles Britannia NutriChoice has become a pioneer in the Indian biscuit market by offering the elusive combination of a ‘health with taste’ value proposition to an emerging set of health-conscious and discerning consumers. This case study analyzes the evolution of the NutriChoice brands over the last decade and examines various strategies adopted by Britannia to grow the brand into its present marketleading position. The Journey • Britannia NutriChoice was the first brand to recognize the needs of the fast-emerging segment of health conscious consumers in India and, for the first time, attempted to combine health with taste in the biscuits market. Through this proposition, Britannia NutriChoice attempted to mitigate the myth of healthy food being low on taste and flavor. • Until 2005 the company market-tested a number of product concepts under the NutriChoice umbrella and, in the process, developed a deep understanding of the need states of India's emerging healthconscious population. ...20% of their income is spent on food. In the Philippines, 55% of their income is spent on food. Food so much cheaper in America, than in any other country. “Americans have gotten fat because the U.S. government is subsidizing the production of food in general and corn in particular (Oliver, 2006, p. 128).” However, the fast food market is not the only ones who are to be blamed. McDonald’s, Subway, and many other fast food places have written beside each meal how many calories are in an order. Many people now are gaining weight by choice. People are refusing to watch what they eat. The largest source of America's weight problem, is primarily snacking, and the consumption of sugary drinks (Oliver, 2006, p. 124). Snacking in America has become so popular because the food market has begun to realize how much American love snacking. Many Americans work long jobs and do not have time to cook, so they purchase microwavable meals, and “to go” snacks ( Oliver, 2006, p. 124). People also eat far too much. The daily amount an American male consumes is 180 calories over what they should be consuming. Women are consuming 360 calories more than what they should be consuming on a daily basis. By just consuming 100 pounds over what is considered “healthy”daily, it causes people to gain around ten pounds per year. The average a person should gain year, is only two pounds once they are sixteen or eighteen. Consuming 3,500 calories equals one pound (Finkelstein and Zuckerman,2008, p...

...Many factors have been attributed to the cause such as socio-economic factors, food advertising strategies, lack of physical activity, and parental influence on diet. http://jaoa.org/article.aspx?articleid=2093529. Thirty years ago, daily activities kept adolescents at a healthy weight. Meals were cooked at home and always included vegetables, fast food dinners were rare and snacking between meals was not the norm. Kids walked to and from school on a daily basis, participated in gym class and played outside at recess and after school. Today adolescents lead a very different lifestyle. A car or bus is the preferred method of transportation to and from school, gym classes and recess times have been minimized due to school budget cuts and time constraints, and adolescents spend their afternoons indoors watching television and playing video games. Parents are more likely to work extended hours and forgo cooking dinner, replacing it with a fast food alternative and snacking between meals is common. In many neighborhoods access to healthy affordable foods is limited and cost prohibitive and finding a safe place to be physically active is a challenge. Regardless of the outcomes of this debate, these key factors have likely worked together to increase the prevalence of childhood overweight and...

Finally, have the kids use a piece of construction paper, folded into three sections to make an illustrated list of their top 3 favorite slow or whoa foods. Have kids get with a partner and use google to look up the portion sizes of their favorite whoa foods. Have measuring cups and spoons available so they can really see how much one serving is. Have kids trace their illustrations with a sharpie, doing their best to draw ther “serving” the right size. For example, if a serving size is fifteen skittles, have the students draw fifteen of them. ... Rinsing removes food particles left behind on/ between the teeth. 3. Eat a healthy balanced diet A healthy balanced diet is a solution to most of our health problems. A diet high in refined carbohydrates like breads, biscuits, etc. puts you at a risk of tooth decay. Avoid sticky foods such as candies, etc. which get stuck in the pits and grooves of your teeth. Sweets and chocolates are not the only ones with sugar. Beware of ‘hidden sugars’ in food which also could cause tooth decay. Increase your daily intake of fruits and vegetables. They remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and gums. 4. Avoid frequent snacking What exposes your teeth to abuse is not how much you eat, but how often you eat. Every time you eat, bacteria convert the carbohydrates in the food into acids that can dissolve your tooth enamel. By snacking throughout the day, you make your teeth susceptible to constant bacterial attack. Hence avoid eating high sugar, high acid foods between meals. Diet soda may have no sugar but the acid in it can be dangerous to your tooth enamel. If you have a sweet tooth, it’s best to have sweets at meal times! 5. Regular dental visits Visit your dentist once in six months for regular check-ups. He/she will be able...

...cups of fruit and 2.5 cups of vegetables daily for someone my age. I didn’t realize how badly I measured against the suggested servings until I tallied what I eat during a given week. I try to eat an apple every day at work or on the way home from night class as a way to avoid unhealthy snacking. I also get some applesauce in with a few meals every week. This time of year I definitely don’t eat as much as I do during the summer, when I can just go outside to where the blueberries or strawberries are growing and just eat until I’m full. I don’t crave fruits and vegetables during winter they way I do in the summer. I will definitely be looking for more ways to incorporate both into my day, as I’m sure it would greatly improve my energy levels for my long work days. I probably only get a half cup of vegetables in during the work day, if I snack on carrots, and another serving at dinner if I make it home in time to eat. I’m definitely below the recommended 2.5 cups, and will need to actively find ways to add them into my diet. Apples are a great way to make sure you get your recommended fruit intake for the day, and they also help fill you up between meals. When I’m at work and feel like snacking, I grab an apple instead. I feel full afterwards, but it also satisfies my craving...

...Executive Summary Having created a brilliant product, Bingo, which successfully brought about innovation in the snack market, Ram and Satya at ITC now are now facing problems in maintaining Bingo’s market share. Increased competition, Low quality cheap copies of the product, and low reach are the major drivers of the loss in market share. The task at hand is to improve Bingo’s performance, regain and increase its market share, communicate the brand proposition effectively and increase its reach in various parts of the country especially south. Getting trials with larger masses and maintaining the loyalty of existing franchise are a few potential ways of establishing connect with the customers. Clearly Bingo’s triangle shape is easily imitable, but the customer’s reasons for buying the snack are mainly its taste. The actual value proposition that the consumer seeks in bingo is the taste. In such a scenario, strategies for defense against copycats and discounted players need to be chalked out by communicating the actual brand proposition effectively. In addition, Bingo’s market penetration in Southern India is low as compared with the Northern India We see it as a huge opportunity for research regarding the consumer behavior specific to southern India, cater to their needs, increase reach and establish a solid base.
