...been a few injuries, chronic fatigue and potential burnout. I decided to step back this year while training for the marathon by preventing myself in falling in the same pattern again. Often times, the best barometer of feedback is not in watts, heart data or fancy graphs. Some of the best feedback comes from our gut instincts. Finding the joy in training and being opening up to being more flexible in our regimen is just as important as all the hard interval work or getting in the volume. This said, I decided to listen to my inner voice which said, “I think I need to rest more today.” That inner voice often sent me an SOS signal calling for either a brief physical or mental break. The best advice that I can give to you as a runner is to speak to yourself as if you were your own best friend. What would you say to a good friend if she or he felt pressure to so something on plan, but knew deep inside what they really needed? What would you say to your friend if he or she said that she was really, really tired and not up for doing something you had planned together? You’d probably say that “it’s okay – we’ll get it in another time.” The best runners, who perform well consistently, often follow a structured training plan. However, they also have learned the art of listening to that inner voice and allowed for flexibility within their plan. As a runner, you need to understand and trust that it’s OK to back off. Listening to that inner voice and allowing for that flexibility...

...aroma. "So where did you meet?" I asked my friend Patrick as he put down his coffee cup. "In the Faculty Center in UP." "Again? How come you meet a lot of guys there? I'm always there and nothing ever happens." Patrick pointed to his face and smiled. "Che!" I replied laughing. But I knew that it was true. Patrick was not really that good looking, but he had this sexy air about him. And he had fair skin which is, for most Filipinos, a prerequisite for beauty. I looked at the mirror behind him and saw my dark, emaciated reflection. "So anyway, I was washing my face in the ground floor washroom when this comes this really cute guy. I've seen him on campus a few times before. So anyway, he goes and takes a leak," Patrick paused. "You know those FC urinals, right?" I nodded. "No partitions." Patrick took another sip from his cup and continued. "So anyway, this guy sees me checking him out. To my surprise, he turns to me, giving me full view of him in all his glory and smiles. I smile back. And," Patrick took a deep breath, "the rest is for me alone to know." He ended by dabbing the sides of his napkin to his mouth. I knew pressing Patrick for more details would shut him up just like that so I let it pass. I could wheedle out all the details later. "So what's his name?" "Carlo." I raised an eyebrow and gave Patrick my you've-got-to-be-kidding look. He laughed and nodded in agreement. "Yes it's another Carlo. It's always Carlo, or Paolo, or Mike, or Jay--" "So what name...

...had been working with Flanagan for just over a month. She knew she had to kill the DailyDilly initiative but was reluctant to do it with the reps present. “Let’s discuss this off-line,” she said. Will slapped the table. “Come on,” he demanded. “We’re here now.” The DailyDilly reps became wide-eyed. Allie took a deep breath. If Will was going to push her, she’d be blunt. “No, then,” Allie said. “It’s not on.” Will pushed his chair back and walked out of the room. The reps started to review their presentation, but Allie stopped them with a wave of her hand. Ruth, no longer smiling, told them all she was sorry and stood up to escort everyone out. Allie knew she had just made some enemies. Half an hour later, Ruth stopped her in the corridor. “So you’re still not convinced?” “Roddy asked me to weigh in on DailyDilly for a reason,” Allie said. Roddy...

Jayanthi Sriram, Asst.Director) GOVERNMENT OF INDIA INSTITUTE SECRETARIAT TRAINING & MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT OF PERSONNEL & TRAINING ADMINISTRATIVE BLOCK, JNU CAMPUS (OLD) OLOF PALMS MARG, NEW DELHI-110067 TEL. 26105592 TELEFAX: 26104183 Revised - 2005 FORWARD In responsive administration it is obvious that the response has to be meaningful. Yet, it may not be effective unless the response time is optimised. This twin objective can be achieved through streamlining of the decision making process itself. In the Central Secretariat, as in other spheres of Government, contribution by all rungs of employees particularly by those at the cutting edge level, namely the Section Officers and Assistants, generally helps arriving at the right decision. Besides collection of information, such contributions are rendered through Noting & Drafting. Effective noting & drafting at every level, therefore, is a matter of prime concern. 2. To address this concern, we in ISTM have been according utmost importance to the inclusion of 'noting and drafting' as a subject in all our foundational and refresher Courses. Besides, focussed workshops on effective noting & drafting are also organised in large numbers. To help participants team effectively, the need for practical exercises cannot be overemphasised. Similarly,...

...During election time in the United States a lot of questions arise. One of these questions is whether the United States is on the right track or not. Utilizing personal experiences I will argue my reasoning for why I do not believe the United States in on the right track, and I will use recent significant news to support my argument. The first reason for why I do not believe that the United States is on the right track is recently in the news we are constantly seeing racism as a focus point. Not a day goes by where there is not a news article racially driven plaguing our daily broadcasting. From a nation that has come so far from the prior days of slavery to be driven back into profiling a person based off the color of their skin goes to show that our country is slipping off from the progress we have made from the civil rights movement and is a firm example of why the United States is not currently on the right track. A second argument that supports my belief that the United States is not on the right track can be understood by looking back at a recent horrible accident in the news related to an Amtrak train derailment. A reason why this is significant to proving the United States is not currently on the right track is this accidents relation to infrastructure. Over the years the current gas tax has been utilized to fund the very projects utilized to maintain our bridges, railways, and roads. In current times the combination...

...Terri Fritts June 10, 2014 BHR 4601-Staff Organizations Professor Elsie Smalls “Application IV†1. Before interpreting the reliability results for the clerical test and work sample, I feel that it is first essential to define the reliability of measurement and its necessity. According to Heneman, the reliability of measurement places an upper limit on the possible validity of a measure. It is reliable to the extent that it provides a consistent set of scores to represent an attribute. In the majority of the case, perfect reliability is never achieved because of the errors existing in the distinct types of measurement. If tests were to occur the same time more than once, it is more likely to have greater reliability. As noted in the first table of the clerical test, the mean score in the results for the clerical test are very similar in the two tests made by the company, in Time one the mean was 31.61 and in Time 2 the mean was 31.22. On the results of work sample of tactfulness and concern of customer the mean scores are also pretty similar. The results for the standard deviations in Time 1 for the clerical test and work samples are also very close to the results of the standard deviations on Time 2. This is one indicator that the tests made are reliable. Besides this indicator, there other results that tells us that these tests are reliable. The test-retest value is .92 which is a very high value, and it is another indicator of reliability of the results. The coefficient...

...SOS TRANSMISSION Through Cellular phones to save Accident Victims -Boon for the cellular phone users * * Abstract: This paper describes an ORIGINAL IDEA to help cellular phone users caught in an accident. The idea has been developed keeping in mind the considerations of cost and compatibility with existing system. The Short Message Service or SMS as it is popularly referred to, is made use of for this purpose. The solution offered is the Force-Transducer method. The victim is assumed to be unconscious and the accident is detected automatically. Detailed simulation results at a scaled down level are provided for this solution. The threshold level is set based on data collected from the experiments. One major problem in such design is the technique to find the victim’s position. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is found to be costly. So, an unorthodox design using Radio Direction Finders (RDF) and beacon signals is described. The Goniometer or Crossed Loop Antenna is used for this purpose. This reduces cost effectively when compared with the GPS system. The paper proceeds to suggest an abstract view of the software robot required to perform the Save Our Souls (SOS) message routing task. It uses a special hierarchical message dispatch system...

...Sonny Not So Different At All In Nacirema, stuffing a small bundle of hog hairs into the mouth along with specific powders of magic is done to prevent from: losing teeth, any bleeding of the gums, shrinking of the jaws, losing friends and lovers. Traditions that are practiced within certain communities are everyday normal daily activities but to those outside of the community within, see them to be strange or abnormal, but in reality, they actually share a lot in common with each other. People of Kroy Wen have their own traditions and ways of life that they are accustomed to just like the people of Nacirema. Horace Miner with the influence of Professor Linton explores into the world of the very secretive Nacirema people. They are seen living in between the Canadian Cree, the Yaqui, Tarahumare of Mexico, and the Carib and Arawak of the Antilles and are believed to be originally from the East. The Nacirema people are known to possess great self-discipline and it is without a doubt that they all share the same patriotism towards their community in keeping their world private to any strangers that may come wandering around their homes. In American tradition, one would be sitting back with their mouths wide open alongside a metallic tray holding shiny sterilized instruments waiting for the dentist to fix his/her toothache. In Nacirema, the patient would instead move a bundle of hog hairs in combination with certain magical powders in their mouth...

...CASE 21 The Not-So-Wonderful World of BONJOUR, MICKEY! In April 1992, EuroDisney SCA opened its doors to European visitors. Located by the river Marne some 20 miles east of Paris, it was designed to be the biggest and most lavish theme park that Walt Disney Company (Disney) had built to date—bigger than Disneyland in Anaheim, California; Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida; and Tokyo Disneyland in Japan. Much to Disney management’s surprise, Europeans failed to “go goofy” over Mickey, unlike their Japanese counterparts. Between 1990 and early 1992, some 14 million people had visited Tokyo Disneyland, with three-quarters being repeat visitors. A family of four staying overnight at a nearby hotel would easily spend $600 on a visit to the park. In contrast, at EuroDisney, families were reluctant to spend the $280 a day needed to enjoy the attractions of the park, including les hamburgers and les milkshakes. Staying overnight was out of the question for many because hotel rooms were so high priced. For example, prices ranged from $110 to $380 a night at the Newport Bay Club, the largest of EuroDisney’s six new hotels and one of the biggest in Europe. In comparison, a room in a top hotel in Paris cost between $340 and $380 a night. Financial losses became so massive at EuroDisney that the president had to structure a rescue package to put EuroDisney back on firm financial ground. Many French bankers questioned the initial financing, but the Disney response was that their views reflected...
