Executive Summary:
The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project has grabbed the headlines ever since its inception in 1997. Along with huge expectations regarding economic and aesthetic development of Ahmedabad city, it has also resulted in the issue of resettlement of slum dwellers from the areas earmarked for the project. In this brief report we have tried to explain the causes behind the controversy and looked at the probable remedies for the same based on our experience of visiting some of the affected areas. We have concluded that the impact of resettlement has to be looked at from the economic perspective and suggested that provision of alternative livelihood is also necessary along with alternative residence.
