Today, consumers recognize the health impact of soda and sugary drinks. Since 2005, soda sales have declined, falling 3% in 2013 alone ,Moloughney, S. (2014, July 1). Health conscious consumers have switched to healthier drinks, increasing revenue for functional drinks. Total revenue for the U.S. functional drinks sector reached $25.2 million in 2012, Moloughney, S. (2014, July 1). According the compound annual growth rate (CAGR), from 2012 – 2017 the CAGR is expected to increase by 8.8%, leading to a market value of $38.5 million by the end of 2017, Moloughney, S. (2014, July 1). To obtain revenue in this functional drink section, and balance soda sale decline, PepsiCo and Coke do not need healthier drink options; they need healthy drink options
