...Name: Course: Date: Instructor: Societal Norms vs. Change People tend to stick to what they know, what has been normal and passed down to them from generations and apply these things to their own lives. Communities are simply afraid of change and afraid of the way it may affect their ways of living for the worst. Change will always affect different people and communities differently, whether it is positively or negatively. Following old traditions within small communities has both costs and benefits. The question is whether or not change could overcome both the benefits and costs of following old traditions within the community. According to Nancy Scheper-Hughes, an anthropologist and the author of The Anthropological Looking Glass, communities, such as small villages from Ireland like Ballybran, need to accept change to be able to learn the more modern ways of looking at situations. Scheper-Hughes critiques the Irish villager’s ways of living and, whether or not she actually noticed, compares this village to American way of living. Villages such as Ballybran may have a different way of living, but this does not necessarily mean it should be looked at as uncivilized or the wrong way, though change may have been a wise choice for the villagers, which Scheper-Hughes was trying to imply. Furthermore, Maxine Hong Kingston, the author of No Name Woman, emphasizes on the risks and effects of change when born into such a strict community such as a woman born into Chinese customs...

...naturally without conforming to the modern society’s standard of “cool”. When you could be who you want to be without worrying about being unwanted or rejected. When you never had to feel guilty cheating a little more today than you did yesterday. When choosing clothes to wear was easy like you never even tried to bother to look in the mirror for the nth time just to examine every inch to make sure if it fits and matches just right. When doing silly things was fun and you were unembarrassed by doing them. I miss the days when crying was just something you did after getting a vaccination or if you get hurt on the playground at recess. When I didn’t have so many trust issues when it came to friends and when being humble and too kind wasn’t considered fake or sketchy. And how simple it was to live in fullness everyday without any of the responsibilities we have as young adults today. Growing up, my entire outlook in life changed; but I learned that all the old memories I’m remembering should be cherished because we’re never going to get those times back unless time machine exist. I’ve come to realize how being vulnerable is okay and being kind is more important than being right. And that some people are just curious as to what’s going on in your life and they’ll say they care when they really don’t. At times we can never avoid wrong decisions – but don’t...

...Essential tips to know how to motivate yourself. Nobody ever wrote down a plan to be broke, fat, lazy, or stupid. Those things are what happen when you don’t have a plan.” – Larry Winget There comes a stage in our when we realize that we should start taking care of our body. That’s when we make the decision of losing weight to get healthy. This decision may sound like “nothing big is going on you are just going to lose some weight”, but in reality, it's a big change in our life because it takes lots of hard work, dedication, and planning. Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more you sweat, the luckier you get.” There are things you need to stop doing in order to succeed. ...time for the lessons I learned along the way. Now, I may not be the smartest, best looking, most athletic, most hardworking or the most charismatic individual at AMP, but I have learned a thing or two during my high-school career. I just want to say that these opinions are based on my high school experiences only, so if you feel differently, it is probably because your high school experience was better than mine. Another thing to keep in mind, some of these may seem logical to most people, but I had to learn these things along the way, so bear with me. First off, I want to say that you should never get too carried away with anything. Never get over-excited about something because life doesn’t go the way it is supposed to. It is impossible to plan out everything and nothing ever goes according to plan. There are two main ways to go about life: Either you believe in destiny and no matter what, your life will end up the way it is supposed to or you don’t believe in destiny and you live life by the moment, in which case nothing you do spontaneously matters, because your whole life is spontaneous. I try to plan out every little detail of my life and something ALWAYS gets screwed up. I will admit that it is important to stay positive about certain aspects in life, but always try to keep things realistic. It is important to know your limits and assure that your dreams don’t interfere with your reality. Secondly, I want to talk to you guys about high school in general. I’ve come...

...Personality Reflection Shannon Johnson PSY/250 10/05/2015 Phoenix Personality Reflection How would I define personality? To me personality is made of so many different things. It takes allot of individual traits to make up someone’s personality. The way that you have been raised from just a little baby. The DNA that has started your foundation in life. What your beliefs are. Five factors have been narrowed down. * Openness = Appreciation for emotion, art, unusual ideas, and a variety of experience * Conscientiousness = Mostly dependable, organized, goals, and self-discipline * Extraversion = Positive energy, assertive, positive emotions, seeks stimulation from others * Agreeableness = Cooperative, trusting, compassionate, competitive * Neuroticism = unpleasant emotions, anger, anxiety, low stability Remember OCEAN To me people are all different. Might have the same hair color, like the same kind of tv shows, even the same first name. Personality comes from traits that you are born with and traits that are learned. If two people go through the exact same thing that does not mean that, they will react or feel the same way. Everyone in this world is unique in his or her own way. Personality is what we have in order to live life on life’s terms. . Every person on this earth thinks of things differently. Personality is an individual’s thoughts, feelings, behaviors and how the individual sees and acts with each altogether. To understand different parts of...

...The Things They Carried Essay People never know how war will affect them until they are actually there. Anything can happen and it’s just a matter of time till something does. War changes a person and depending on what happened there's no way of knowing what will happen next. War changes people and how they cope, their ability to connect with others and their morality. During war people see things that most people wouldn’t which affects their ability to cope. After being with these people all the time it wouldn’t be the same as seeing a stranger dying. So when Rat Kiley watch as Curt Lemon was blown up he didn’t know how to cope with it. “Rat Kiley was crying. He tried to say something, but then cradled his rifle and went off by himself”(50 O’Brian). To try and cope with losing his friend Rat Kiley took out all his anger out on the baby water buffalo. While torturing the baby water buffalo named Rat Kiley that was him trying to cope with the fact that he just watched his friend die. Another inability to cope is giggling like Paul Berlin did when he was scared when he saw Billy Boy Watkins leg got blown off....

...“The Things They Carried” written by Tim O’Brien is a book based on the life of the author who was a soldier in the Vietnam war. The book can be said to be unchronological since there is a mixture of the past and the present, life after and during the war. O’Brien talks about the experiences he went through as well as some of the ones his friends went through. Even though the novel was written based on the Vietnam War, there are multiple times where the author states that the novel is fiction. In an interview with Texas Monthly, O’Brien stated,"Good movies -- and good novels, too -- do not depend upon 'accurate portrayals.' Accuracy is irrelevant. Is the Mona Lisa an 'accurate' representation of the actual human model for the painting? Who knows? Who cares? It's a great piece of art. It moves us. It makes us wonder, makes us gape; finally makes us look inward at ourselves." Accurate portrayal, in my opinion is based on real life but may have some exaggeration in order for many people to believe it and relate to. Without that, people will doubt the author’s credibility because they know that whatever they’re...

...posed “What is, is and cannot never be” concludes that something that exists cannot cease to exist, for when it departs it is re-located to an alternative place. This substance would then exist somewhere. For example, if a living being dies and decomposes, the components of said being will return to the earth in a combination of different elements. This coincides with the law of thermodynamics and the idea that energy can never be destroyed, and that while it appears to be lost or consumed it is merely converted or displaced. Here it appears as though the being in question ceases to exist, however, they are merely transformed and transferred somewhere else into a new combination of matter. One might argue that said being only exists corporally and while its elemental parts are recycled into the environment, the being as a distinct concept ceases to exist. Or beyond this obstacle if the ‘is’ is referring to the existence and continuation of some latent form of consciousness or the soul, we have no way of verifying its existence...

...Another noteworthy symbol existing in The Catcher in the Rye is The Museum of Natural History. Holden mentions that the best thing about the museum is “that everything always stayed right where it was” (Salinger 121). Holden finds comfort in the notion that no matter how different he becomes, the museum will always be the same. This reveals Holden’s fear of change and desire to live a steady, consistent life (Alsen). The Museum of Natural History is in some ways, a safety blanket for Holden. It emblems calmness and stability, two things Holden craves. The ideology that “some things never change” is both pleasing and soothing to him. Throughout the novel, Holden constantly grapples with his viewpoint on growing up. He believes that nearly all...

...do you believe have had the most significant influence on geography? I would have to say that humans affect geography greatly because as we tend to live on this earth we adapt and change things where we go. Some of these changes tend to have great affects to the earth and to others who share the earth with us. We tend to cut forest down which has an affect on green gasses put into the atmosphere, we make other changes which is starting to affect global warming and making natural disasters stronger which is affecting where we live. I do now believe that human culture has the most significant influence on geography because of the way we have been altering things throughout history though we think were making it better for ourselves there is always some consequences to deal with but we don’t realize it until further down the road by that time its sometimes too late. 2. What are at least three geographic or cultural factors that would stop one country’s culture from spreading and mixing into another country’s culture? Provide a solution for each factor identified. I think that one factor that would change or stop one countries culture from spreading would have to be traveling, if no one was traveling to the country the culture would never be learned or spread from country to...

...In the novel The Things They Carry it talks about all the things a solider has to carry with them whether that be emotionally or physically. Often we fail to realize what soldiers have to go through physically and emotionally, and how that impacts them. Many people fail to realize that war changes a person but I’ve came to realize that after war soldiers have a better understanding of right vs. wrong. Soldiers face life changing experiences that an average human being may never have to face. Right vs. wrong can be changed in certain situations due to the circumstances. Soldiers experience life changing experiences during war. This is why often soldiers come back with post traumatic stress disorder. They go through several months away from...
